Sanjaya And I Aren’t Related, OK?

MTV news superproducer Vanessa White Wolf leads a charmed life, and over the weekend she was blessed to have the most charming experience of all: an afternoon and evening with Sanjaya Malakar. Now, this wasn’t just any date. Last season’s “American Idol” cast-off was in town to play Rachel’s Bat Mitzvah (we don’t know who Rachel is, but thanks for letting us crash your birthday party) on Long Island. At a castle. (Hey MTV Development, can I get dibs on “My Sweet 13″?). And we were there to cover it.

Oh there were good times to be had all night, apparently, including Sanjaya being in the chair for the hora while everyone sang “Hava Nagila,” losing his place during Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely,” and lunch at Benihana (Vanessa, not Sanjaya). Oh, and Ashford & Simpson performed, too. YOU CAN’T MAKE THIS UP!

But first, Vanessa met Sanjaya at the Nu Best Salon, where he had gone to get his hair done - his first haircut since being on American Idol, btw (Um, kinda gross?). The hairstylist wanted to have his hair look like something he would’ve rocked on American Idol last year but instead, Sanjaya brought a picture of John Mayer as a reference to the “rocker” look he wanted (Frankly, we think it’s more of a Michael Hutchence coif).

Over the course of the afternoon, Vanessa said that six or so people remarked to him how beautiful his sister was. Now, we also think Vanessa is beautiful, but she wants to let you know that “SANJAYA AND I AREN’T RELATED OK?! I guess we’re both brown, but that’s the extent of it.”

Upon arriving at the castle, Vanessa and the crew were taken up to Sanjaya’s room. He told her he had taken a “waterfall bath” that morning. Vanessa does not know what that is and we don’t want to tell her. In our interview with him, Sanjaya weighed in on Danny Noriega and his own projects. And then it was time for the show. the kids screamed for Sanjaya, he serenaded Rachel with a version of “Happy Birthday,” and he left Vanessa with one more notch on the charmed-life belt.

  1. I thought Sanjaya was far more unique than the cookie cutter Daniel Noriega. Noriega reminded me of every club kid ever to haunt a kiddie disco. Could he sing? More or less and maybe better than Sanjaya, but his "Tainted Love" was predictable, his moves were cliche, and, when compared to the other American Idol wannabes, he brought nothing. He was just a kid who cried a lot.

  2. I'd just like to state for the record that nobody at the salon called me beautiful. But thanks, MTV News blog author, for saying so!
  3. thank you for the respectful blog sanjaya was aslo in NY for a booksigning & the bat mitzih for the young lady was for charity. many fanjayas think vanessa looks like haley[season 6] take that as a compliment she's beautiful so are you .
sanjaya looks very happy. he made a young girl's celebration very special. sanjaya is a great kid . its funny how everyone is asking him about danny ,the media did the same thing to sanjayas fellow contestants when they asked about him & sanjaya says NICE POSTIVE comments, thats who he is a real down to earth kind of guy.
  4. We (at dazeoffire.com) have truly enjoyed following Sanjaya since he was on American Idol. Most of us were lucky enough to attend the tour and was blessed enough to meet Sanjaya after the show at the after parties.

Sanjaya is truly a wonderful young man and I am very proud to be fan!
  5. I think this dude was talking about Danny because both of them are from the other team (if you know what I mean)I just feel sorry for Sanjaya he made a fool of himself in Idol I think he went on because people are mean and wanted to see what other crap he was gonna do.
  6. I'm truly jealous of every person that's ever been able to meet Sanjaya. I've been a fan of him since the day I saw him audition on idol last season. The night that he got voted off, I stopped watching the show. I saw him on tour with the rest of the contestants at the end of the season, but never got to meet him personally, unlike some lucky people.

Does anyone know if he's planning anything big in the future? I really really hope that I get to meet him one day.

    I love him. :]
  7. Sanjaya is a great singer, performer AND human being.

Sanjaya is in Osaka Japan as a guest of Yamaha. He's training on his custom synthesizer Yamaha gifted him.

When he returns, he's doing a charity event with Shyamali and Bernadette Bascomb in Bothell, WA 4/6/08.

He will drop a CD sometime this year.

The Universe of Sanjaya is all the way live!
