‘Idol’ In Iraq: Soldiers Slam David Archuleta, Still Suspicious Of Kristy Lee Cook
idoliniraq2

Editor’s Note: It’s crazy serious and difficult for the US Armed Forces in Iraq, but our soldiers still find time for a little fun and escape: just like many of you, they love their weekly dose of “American Idol.” We made friends on the Internet with some members of the Army’s 82nd Airborne division (Fort Bragg, what up!), who will be sending us their review of each “Idol” installment.

They get “Idol” a day later than we do, and their reports might not arrive until well after the show has aired (because, of course, things like communications blackouts do happen when you’re in the military taking care of URGENT BUSINESS). But you don’t mind because they are helping give you the freedom to watch “Idol” in the first place.

Our soldiers each week (L-R): PFC Joshua Miranda, 22 (Orlando, FL); PFC Nathan Puckett, 19 (Cynthiana, KY); SPC Cory Combs, 21 (Plymouth, MA); SSG Steve Cody, 27 (Los Angeles,CA)

Major label reject, Kristy Lee Cook, has been teetering on the brink of elimination all season long, though she hit a high note this week performing Lee Greenwood’s red-state-rousing “God Bless the USA.” Randy, Paula and Simon lauded the “smart” song choice, with Cowell calling it Cook’s “best performance by a mile.” But how did the patriotic anthem play with our judges in uniform? The song resonated with the troops but Kristy’s rendition did not. “We did not really buy it… We were more motivated by [Michael Johns’] “We Are the Champions,” 19-year-old Nathan wrote. “I think after hearing that song we were all ready to go fight.”And they came gunning for early “Idol” favorite David Archuleta, whose confusing song choice left the military men at a loss, though they had little trouble finding some strong words in their curt condemnation – “hate” being the one that stands out the most (we suspect they won’t get caught up in David Archuleta PromGate 2008).

Find out what the guys thought of Jason Castro, Carly Smithson, Brook White, show-stopper David Cook and all your other favorites, after the jump.

Ramiele Malubay, “Alone” by HeartCory: “Yet another boring song from her.”
Joshua: “I keep thinking she is going to blow us away but she never does.”Jason Castro, “Fragile” by Sting

Nathan: “A very safe song to pick. I think this is his worst song choice so far.”
Steve: “Sweet. It was pretty awesome.”

Syesha Mercado, “If I Were Your Woman” by Stephanie Mills

Nathan: “She is becoming one of my favorites.”
Cory: “She hit all of the notes. I think she has one of the best voices.”

Chikezie, “If Only for One Night” by Luther Vandross

Steve: “Excellent, he really nailed the song.”
Joshua: “It wasn’t as good as his last couple of performances.”
Cory: “I don’t like when he does the ballads. I wish he would keep doing fast songs and putting his own twist on them.”

Brooke White, “Every Breath You Take” by The Police

Nathan: “How could you mess up a Police song??”
Cory: “She really didn’t do it for me this week.”

Michael Johns, “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions” by Queen

Steve: “His best so far. Queen is awesome and so was his performance.”
Joshua: “He showed off his amazing vocals in this song.”

Carly Smithson, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler

Joshua: “I love the song but I didn’t like the way she sang it.”
Cory: “Another great vocal performance for her.”

David Archuleta, “You’re the Voice” by John Farnham

Nathan: “I had no clue what the song was.”
Steve: “This song sucks!”

Kristy Lee Cook, “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood

Nathan: “A very popular song and I didn’t think she did badly but she is still the least talented.”
Cory: “She did a great job with the song. She might have saved herself from getting eliminated.”

David Cook, “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson

Steve: “Awesome rendition. Better than Jackson’s version. That’s my boy!”
Joshua: “The best performance of the season.”

After this week’s performances, the consensus among our commentators was that David Cook is the man to beat and David Archuleta should be sent packing. Only SPC Cory Combs picked Chikezie as the one to get the boot. Let’s see if he’s right again next week.

  1. nick and paul should hook up
  2. Are you kidding me!? Just because not many people knew David Archuleta's song "You're the Voice" doesn't mean it was a bad performance! In fact his vocals were fantastic, other than a small crack in his voice. He is, by far, the best contestant on the show.
  3. david cook have talent too, but perhaps he should be
in the category of best band frontrunner. my idea
of an idol is someone who inspire many people with his music. has the ability to move people's heart and affect their mood. David archuleta have it. He
connect with people and shared his gift which has been his goal since he was 12 years old. he is something special. someone to look up for inspiration and hope. love him and wish him the best in life, he deserve it.
good luck to our troop in iraq.
  4. wow, this is truly sad. This is a singing competition on TV. I personally don't like David A.'s performances. I am not "stupid" or "jealous" or anything like that, that is just my opinion. Others on here like him, and that is great. That is what the makes the world go 'round and makes us all special.

And before I get slammed I never said a WORD about the person David A IS, and, if I recall, no one else did EITHER. They are discussing performances. No one can know what someone on tv is like-even his fans do not truly know him, so to say he is a "sweet boy" is just an assumption made because you do not know him IRL.
  5. If David Cook is so amazing...why doesn't he have a record deal now? He had one before and got dropped. There must be a reason they did not want him and maybe it is because the rock world is flooded with singers just like him. He is not original (Daughtry wannabe). He copies other artist versions and he is self-loving. Don't get it, not buying it?
  6. First of all, I have the highest respect for our military guys! I salute your service and hearts for protecting the world from terrorism. I also support David Archuletta for the same reason, though he is taking a different approach as a 17 year old. The song "You're the Voice" is anti-HATE.....Without terrorists in the world, there would be no war! David is not old enough to fight terror in the military, but with his voice he can expose HATE for the damage and destgruction it brings to the world. I think our military guys might have misunderstood the INTENT of the song. While it has been used as an antiWAR song, the overall message is that people from around the world need to relate to one another from the pov given in this line from the song: We're all someone's daughter
    We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun? Like I said, I am for this war on terror...until terrorists and dictators are confronted, there will NEVER be world peace. By the way, I am a David A fan at the young age of 51.
  7. Oh PUKE! "Don't be so mean to David A"...wah wah wah. How is it being mean to not like his music choices or the way he sings? Music, like all art, is SUBJECTIVE. You people think he should not be criticized for his musicality because he's a good person? (Yes, I know it's ALSO because he has the bestest voice ever!) First, how do any of you actually KNOW what kind of person he his? He smiles and acts shy so that means he can save the world with his music? I'm not that saying he ISN'T a good person, but how could any of you possibly know that? Just trying to point out the absurdity of some of the above statements. What does being a cute puppy (I really think he is cute) have to do with being the best singer/performer? Look, I actually think the boy has talent but I would never vote for him. I only vote for someone who I would buy their record(personality aside because I don't KNOW any of them). David A. might have been that someone if I was 12 but for now I think he'd truly be better off with the Disney-Miley Cyrus-teeny bopper genre until he matures. Back to what I said earlier, who cares if I, or our soldiers, or anyone else don't like your choice for Idol? Chill out! Not everyone has the same taste in music.

Thanks to the soldiers for all your sacrifices... it means more than I could possibly express. Stay safe!
  8. go obama.

    david archuleta rocks
  9. To Amanda, you are 100% right, way to go Amanda. Why would people say bad things about this boy, David A who is so sweet, humble, shows humility, down-to-earth, good looking, has great smile, has great voice, honest and cute? What did he do to you people for David A to deserve those bad words, derogatory words. You people are just jelous, envious of David A for he is being liked by many. I know everyone has a choice, but don't shoot the boy just because he is the best. Didn't you know people, that David A is the top most vote getter. He is always the number 1. So, please stop saying bad things about him. Just like me, I don't say bad things about other AI contestants even if I don't like them. Your parents say, if you ain't saying anything good at all, don't say it at all.
  10. just thought id let you guys know- im from australia, and "You're the voice" is by John Farnham, one of the most popular artists over here. You're the voice is one of the best known and most-loved Aussie songs- its like what "God bless the USA" is to us.
  11. David C will win american idol. He is the most talented one. Maybe this is my opinion but ive listened to his own music he has made, and its AWESOME!!! Personaly David a bores me. He reminds me of a little kid.. i think if he wins he will be singing songs like the jonas brothers on disney channel. But thats just my opinion..
  12. I think that we all need to take into account that, whether we want to believe it or not, not everyone likes the same music, it doesn't mean they are wrong when they say that David A. isn't the best and it doesn't mean that we are right when we say he rocks!!! It just means that, those are our opinions I definetley think that he deserves to win the entire competition and whether we want to believe it or not this is no longer just a singing competition it is more of a popularity conest which isnt all bad because it keeps people like Taylor hicks from winning and I am sure i will here it for saying that I personlally think that Kat could sing circles around him but anyway,,,, GO CLINTON!!!
    GO DAVID A.
    GOD BLESS AMERICA
    GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS
    AND THANK YOU SOOOO0 MUCH
  13. Amen... to starrylaurie's comments... I can't really see that David Cook is that amazing... other than he is a "rocker". And every song he does at some point he will yell sing, it's very predictable, even in his so-called ballad- Billie Jean- didn't like it but that's my taste in music and I'm glad there are many song types for different people otherwise I would have to give up music because I just don't like David Cook's voice/style.
  14. f the soldiers and f the war
go david and kristy! o and the other blonde girl too shes so sweet!!
  15. i dont like david a! he sings well but his is too young and doesnt handle critisim very well! you cant even begin to compare him with david c and michael johns!
lets vote for someone who can sing and not someone you feel sorry for or think is cute! this is a singing contest, not a popularity contest!
  16. I totally believe that EVERYONE has their rights to their opinion but amsfrmsa How can you say that he doesn't handle critisim well??? He stands up there like EVERYONE else and listens to everything they say to him. He doesn't give attitude, like some, no names, and he doesn't arguing with them. He didn't argue when Simon said "He would be surprised if he picked that song himself" And not til he was asked about him choosing the song did he answer. When Simon dissed his performance, he AGREED with him. So how does he not take critism well?? Also immature?? He is more mature than half of the contestants up there and he is the youngest and the FRONT RUNNER! So that young "immature" kid is wooping butt on the "older" and "mature" adults!! GO DAVID A!!!
  17. David Cook is definitely overated and honestly not the best singer in this competition. I too love rockers and comparing him to Daughtry is an insult to Daughtry. Daughtry has great vocals. David Cook gets A for good research of different versions of songs to sing. David Archuleta is not only admired for his vocals, maturity, positive attitude and picking songs that can be special messages for today's world. By the way, I am not a teenager, but a Mom in my 40's who appreciates good role models, great vocals, maturity and guts. David Archuleta has all of that. Stop picking on him, whether he wins AI or not, he will get a big contract. No need to be so mean to him. That is what jealousy is all about. Too many great qualities in him needless to say great vocals. My favorites in this competition David Archuleta, Michael Johns (his rock song was far better than David Cook's) and Brook White. It will be fun to see all 3 in the top 3. Three different styles of musical talent. Go David Archuleta and God Bless our troops. Carly has a nice voice, but sorry can't see an Irish tatooed woman singing God Bless America at the Superbowl or at the Olympics or represent the USA too well.

Thank God we live in a country were diversity and fredom to choose is still available to us. That is why there are so many different types of singers, different styles of music. We all like what we like. I will still buy David Archuleta's CD for his great vocals. I downloaded the studio version of all his song. His is absolutely AMAZING.
  19. how the freak can anyone hate david archuleta. he is the best on the show. and just because the soilders haven't heard of the song, does not mean the song sucked. i loved david's version of the song and how he sand it. and i have heard of the song so i wish stupid articles would stop saying david chose a song no one has ever heard of. just because you have never heard of a song does not mean no one has heard of it. in all of america's history, there have been many songs and it does not mean you need to hear them all and this includes different languages and coutnries cuz i heard you're the voice was from austraila. so shut up articles if you don't know what you guys are talking about. and i wish all of the david haters will stop bashing out on david archuleta. for guys, stop bashing him because you guys are jealous that he gets all the girls and for girls who bash at him, stop bashing at him because you guys are jealous of his singing abilities. don't hate him if you don't know him. david a. should not be hated at all because on the whole american idol show this season, he is the sweetest person on there. when the other contestants get bashed by the judges, they argue with them. david archuleta does not do that. he just takes it and smiles. and whoever gots the nerves to diss david archuleta, you guys will be attacked by the arc angels cuz i am an arc angel and i have dissed everyone in my class and school that disses david archuleta.
  20. OOooh David A's so cute and adorable! Gag, Gag , Gag me. He looks and acts like he's 17 going on 13.

David Cook has great vocals. Please clean out your ears. Very mature musician. Hope he wins but I think the prepubescent teens will vote Archuleta in.

Doesn't matter I think Cook will sell more records.
  21. I think there are a lot of tone deaf people on this site. To say that Michael John's version of We Are The Champions was better than Cook's Billie Jean just means that you don't have that great an ear. Simon even said that Cook's performance was in a different league to everyone elses and actually made most of them look "ridiculous". I personally think Cook is better than Daughtry although Daughtry is certainly talented as well.
  22. I just read an article that posed the question "Will David A. turn Idol into the Kids Choice Awards?" That is right on as far as I'm concerned. It is turning into a show that is strictly for tweens and old people. If Archuleta wins then that is IT for anyone I know who is over 12 and under 50 that watches the show. I'm not saying the kid can't sing but I stopped watching the Disney Channel and/or Nickelodeon a long time ago.
  23. Hi - Just to clear things up: David Archuleta picked this song because he knows our daughter who was accidentally shot through the head at 12 years old by a friend who found her dad's gun and was playing with it. Our charity is to stop Columbine type shootings and accidental shootings of children. We are not against guns, we are just for keeping them safely secured so kids can't get them. David sang for our charity at an event where California Senator Scott attended, and his son was killed in an accidental shooting. So this song has a personal message for us and our children, victims of curiousity. Be safe everyone!
  24. Wow! The blog war between David A & David C fans is almost more entertaining than the show. How 'bout having the "Archie" fans battle the "Cookie" fans in the UFC octagon - last rabid fan standing wins it all for his/her David - recording contract, title belt and doe-eyed stalker! It could be a pay-per-view event!
  25. David Archuleta was kind enough to sing for our charity when he was 12. He sang from his heart (as always) and received two standing ovations! Here is a link to our charity for the prevention of unintentional shootings: www.StopOurShootings.org . Stop Our Shootings is not an anti-war or anti-gun organization. We go to schools and have children who have been shot talk to school kids about guns. We support safe storage of guns to keep children from playing with guns and being accidentally shot or doing Columbine-type shootings.
We are so blessed to have David and his beautiful family in our lives. We ALL send our prayers and love to our soldiers in Iraq! Be safe everyone!!!
  26. If I have to listen to him sing another song with a "MESSAGE" I will be forced for the first time to pick up my cell and vote this season...! Please just sing to entertain, not to send a "MESSAGE" Thank You Very Much...!
  27. David Archuleta is GAY!!!!!!.. I have gaydar and i'm gay. so yea. lolz. His hand movemnets are feminine and sings fluffy positive songs. He's like Sanjaya. He's probably still in his pre-pubertal stage and doesn't even know it yet. =P He'll be a Clay Aiken that girls would go wild for. haha
  28. You guys must be soooooooooooo Jealous of David Archuleta. I can see why you are throwing negative remarks out there on him. A younger man that your girlfriends/wives are drooling over with his talent? Sorry don't you 3 guys have better things to do right now than slam a young man at 17 who has an incredible talent? David Archuleta is NOT THE ENEMY. People that are trying to kill you are. Stay safe and please don't be so angry with jealous remarks. If you had singing talent you too can be on American Idol one day. Let's see how far your talent will take you.
  29. Stop being so mean spirited and keep the negative and nasty comments on David Archuleta to yourselves. He has not done anything to you why. You are obviously very jealous of his talents and looks..I am a 35 year old very attractive woman who things he is AWESOME. Stop being so insecure because teens and women of all ages, LOVE DAVID ARCHULETA. Mean people are NOT LOVED
  30. Damn Miranda is lookin sexy in his uniform! Q Papi!! ;)
  31. Honestly. I know most of the women on here supporting David are old enough to be his mother (or his grandmother or great-grandmother). But even so, it doesn't mean he needs your support. He IS trying to be a pop star. He's going to have to learn to take criticism. Back of the cute boy and let him sing.
  32. Teen Girls Teen Chat Teen Panties...

I can not agree with you in 100% regarding some thoughts, but you got good point of view...
