Atmosphere’s In the Top Five: Indie Hip-Hop Justice?
atmosphere

The latest SoundScan figures are in, and, for a second straight week, the nation’s best-selling LP – by a long shot — belongs to Miss Mariah. The hilariously named E=MC2, sold nearly 182,000 copies. But, let’s face it — La Diva’s run at the top will almost certainly be cut short next week, when Madonna’s Hard Candy enters the Top 200. Madge could take on Mariah on the shelves and on the mat.

But the most interesting thing about next week’s chart, though, has to be Atmosphere, whose latest set, When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That S— Gold, enters the chart at #5. Considering the Minneapolis hip-hop duo’s still on the fringe, it was surprising to see that their record sold 36,400 copies in its first week — not shabby at all for MC Slug (above) and producer Ant, who’ve thrived on their underground cred since getting together back in the mid-90’s.

Maybe their hipster cred has finally reached a boiling point? Or maybe it’s the guest-vocal props from Tom Waits and TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe? Then again, Atmosphere’s long been a slow burn — they’re one of the best-selling indie hip-hop acts of the last decade, rebuffing a few major-label offers in their day. Or maybe it’s Slug’s completely tripped-out lyrics.

What do you think helped Atmosphere break through?

  1. As an erstwhile Minneapolitan and huge Flight of the Conchords fan (FOTC at #3!), I gotta say I'm in a pretty good mood today. Now if only Brother Ali's record had done as well last year. Another Ant-produced triumph from the Rhymesayers crew.
  2. atmosphere is #5 on the charts because as other artists' music is not being purchased in great numbers as it was five or ten years ago (barely five, "get rich or die trying" came out in 2003 so...), the artists who have been releasing material consistent in quality and garner album sales that reflect that consistency* can take a higher spot on the charts on the right week . not to discredit atmosphere; the album is great, but this is how it was supposed to happen.

this week, they almost doubled what they sold on week one last time they dropped a full album.
to the surprise of no one.

and "hipsters" stopped listening to atmosphere a long time ago, didn't they?

how are you spending your memorial day weekend?

*probably not even consistency. their albums get better as the make more of them. what's the right word for that in the context of my sentence?
  3. how about the facto that they didnt let the album leak or give out advance copies? id say that mighta help them sell some copies. maybe its just a good record.
  4. This CD Is amazing - it's old school and yet still new and fresh. It's about time the underground kids came out and paid the money from their back packs to put our artists on the sound scan charts...

Don't get me wrong- i'm all about supporting artist via ticket sales, merchandise and word of mouth- but its nice to see these truly talented artist getting recognition for their hard work.

I wish all the independent hip hop groups received this much support, each time they put out an album.

I.e. Sage Francis, Living Legends- new album The Gathering (on sale now), The Grouch- Go buy his new album- SHOW YOU THE WORLD (on sale now), Brother Ali- The Undistputed Truth (on sale now), The Roots- Go buy their new album- Rising Down (on sale now), B-Dolan's- The Failure and Prolyphic and Reanimator's- The Ugly Truth- Dropping May 6th...

    ETC, etc-
  5. Because we all need something to believe in, and for thousands and thousands of people, that belief is atmosphere!
