Whitney: ‘America’s Next Top Model’’s Phat Girl

Along with her Miley Cyrus obsession, we have learned that MTV News intern Jackie is also a devotee of the Tyra Banks-athon, “America’s Next Top Model.” Here she shares her thoughts on contestant Whitney, the plus-sized model currently dominating this season:

Being a self-proclaimed religious viewer of La Tyra’s “Next Top Model,” I find this season to be the most exciting for one reason: Whitney. The stunning 20-year-old from Atlantic Beach, Florida, has gotten farther in this competition than any of the previous “plus-sized” girls, and I’m sure a lot of women would agree that it’s been a long time coming. Last night, although in the bottom two, she was pushed through to the final four, sending the once-favored Katarzyna packing.

I, for one, was getting a little tired of the same sort of girl winning every season, and when Whitney stepped in the room the first episode, I wondered if finally we would see a “plus-sized” girl win. Modeling shows have become so popular, it’s great to see a normal body type – one you’d see in your mom or best friend (or in the mirror?) — getting closer to winning.

Marilyn Monroe was a size 10-12 by our standards, and we idolized her as being a sex symbol. What happened over the years that being malnourished has become sexy? Alessandra Ambrosia is my favorite model, but I don’t always want to see women that I have to kill myself to look like.

I believe the most important reason Whitney has gotten so far is her confidence and personality, a quality Tyra said was missing in many of the other plus-sized girls in the past. That confidence is what truly makes a woman beautiful — as clichéd as it sounds. It’s a modeling competition, so what you look like should matter most. But it’s also a TV show, and personality is a big part of the equation.

Along with that personality, Whitney does have an amazing body, one that a lot of women would love to have: tall, toned, and curvy. She is what a real woman looks like. And by the way, real women buy clothes (hint hint, retailers!), and real women probably want to see what a dress would look like on them when they flip through the magazines.

Has “ANTM” finally seen that there needs to be a lot more variety in the fashion industry? I hope so. And I hope Whitney takes this all the way.

  1. Whitney is ridiculous. She's fake, false and so campy with her poses. Spare me about a realistic woman. She looks like a mental patient.
  2. It's sad when there's a double standard...so we like her because she is bigger boned? Puhleez. Have you NOT been watching the same show I have? She is INSANE. FAKE. and SO annoying. And RUDE to almost everyyyyyyy girl in that house. She needs to go. Now. Thnx.
  3. I love Whitney and I'm all about the woman-love. But I just don't get why Anja has been doing so well. I mean Katarzyna is the way better looking slav.
  4. Whitney is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She'd better win. She's 1000x better than that man Dominique. And Fatima is BORING -- she's nothing but an Iman-wannabe. Go Whitney!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. Gosh, what's with all the (jealous)Whitney haters? It truly IS about time ANTM recognized a different type of model. The ethnic skinny look is so tired! Whitney is a typical American beauty and you know it! Go Whitney! I hope ANTM and TB finally show some integrity and give common women a voice!
  6. I think Whitney is hilarious. And as for being fake, rude etc... She's not the only one and definitely not the worst. I don't think she'll win but I think she'll be in the top three which is an improvement on previous cycles. I'd love to for Whitney to win because she's plus size but honestly I think Anya is the stronger model.
  7. i love whitney. she is sooo beautiful and knows how to speak her mind. as for fatima she is so ugly and i dont understand how she has made it this far. kat was soo pretty too. and i dont understand how she got voted off so long ago. and how is anya supposed to to a covergirl commerical when she cant speak english too well. even tho she takes stunning pictures its AMERICAS next top model not somewhere elses top model
  8. I think like most people i would love to see a plus sized woman win the compitition. However, if you honestly look at the show then obviously Anya IS the strongest model, her speech may be annoying but over-all she IS stronger.
Whitney is beautiful and has great potential, she just needs to take direction and advice better, and maybe drop the cheesy fakeness she tends to have in challenges or shoots. So out of the two i would rather the winner be the best, not just win because she is plus sized.

As far as a "realistic woman" portrayal, how about the women who are ON AVERAGE, not 5'7 and taller? maybe fashion should start to consider those people as well. Taller women (big or small) are treated better than any shorter woman ever would be.
  9. For Goodness sake Its the fashion/modelling industry you dont have to be pretty or skinny to me a model models need to have STRIKING feaures and i belive that Fatima,Whitney and Anya posses those qualities yes i think Whitney should win its about time we had a plus sie model win but i think Anya will win simply becuase she's the most high fashion(as Tyra puts it) and FYI for the fools whi mock Anya's accent most up and comming models arent from England or America so they're bound to have accents

why dont you stop being ignorant and open your eyes get over it they'er models your not go and get on with your lives im sure they dont actually care what you say anyway
  10. Ok people ! get real here , this is a competition so I say so what if she mean or rude or fake to the other girl,s you do what you have to to win , this may not even be her she may just play the game well. It is about time for a real woman to win this in stead of a stick , there are more plus size women then skinny and it,s time the designers realized it . Whitney is gorgus and confident and I would kill to have her size and be as confident as her, she can keep the blond hair.
  11. OMG i am like soooooo happy whitney one se was like by far my absulute fav she is the best
  12. Honestly ladies, Whitney won fair and sqaure! She talks and walks better than anya and fatima and overall she was the prettiest girl on the show, and the fact that she is larger than the other girls is nice, at least she fills out her clothes and doesnt look like a stick in them.
  13. I loved you statement that Real women buy clothes. I am a mother to a teeneage daughter and I once was very skinny (poor health came with it) and now that I have curves I am trying to put this across to my daughter that we do not need to be skinny to be beautiful. I am so happy that WHitney won and so is my daughter. We were cheering her one from day 1 and when it was time to annouce the winner both she and I thought that Anya was going to be announce the ANTM winner but we were so thrilled thqat Whitney's names was announce. Let Whitney prove to all that women have curves and we are proud!
  14. i love whitney ..... she is real ANTM 10 anya very weak on runway and fatima is boring
  15. I was so happy that a plus model made it all the way. Whitney did a wonderful job and I pray people will listen to what she said about
herself and other full figure women. I know her confidence is so high and I know she encourage a lot of full figure women to love who they are. If you don't love yourself you cannot love anyone else. Whitney, Great Job!
    to GOD BE THE GLORY!!!!!!
  16. Well I'm a REAL woman, and I am curvy, and I'm a size 2, believe it or not!
Think of Kylie Minogue, she's petite but she's got a hot body.. is she FAT??? NO!!
