With Jason Castro Gone, ‘Idol’ Can Get Back to Being Polished, Scrubbed & Boring
JohnJCShirt

So that’s it, brother. You had to know it was coming after Tuesday night

But let me say this about Tuesday: it may not have been your finest moment, but “I Shot the Sheriff” was a way more interesting choice from the Hall of Fame songbook than the umpteenth version of “Stand By Me” and “Proud Mary.” And for Simon to have suggested “you don’t touch that song”? Huh? As if anything is inviolable on “American Idol” — please. A sanitized version of “Imagine” is OK, stripped of its atheist, socialist teeth, but a “karaoke” version of Marley’s fight-the-power anthem is not? Spare me the double standard.

Not that I am making excuses for the performance, JC — not great. And then Dylan — fine choice, I’d rather hear it than that old classic rock radio wheezer “Baba O’Riley.” But you can’t go up on the lyrics. You said you were “thinking too much” and not just letting it flow. Bad time for that to happen. We all know that you weren’t the first one to do it this season, still…

And the outrage in the blogoverse about Jason’s eye-widening, his supposedly “flippant” reaction to the judges, his lack of appropriate remorse over his blown performances, his ever-present smile. WTF do you people think this is? It’s a singing contest! If you ask me, he took it as seriously as “American Idol” ought to be taken. So, let’s see — when Simon told him to pack his bags, should he have had a “Brooke moment” and broken down? Should he have been shaken to the core? Please. He acknowledged that he “screwed up” two songs he knew and loved, and that’s it. No more penance is needed.

I have to believe at some point — maybe between Mariah Carey week and Andrew Lloyd Webber week? — this kid from Texas realized he was in a club that he didn’t really belong, or feel all that comfortable in. Oh well. So much for a little dose of realness in “Idol.” It was refreshing while it lasted.

Congrats, viewers. Now you’re back to the show just the way you like it: polished, scrubbed, respectful, and boring. A future Broadway star, another Daughtry and…(cough) I don’t even know what to call that study in arrested development.

Jason, sorry you got the boot. I doubt you really thought you were gonna win this thing, but thanks for a good run, some nice song choices, and exactly the right attitude. Good luck, dude. It will be a less interesting show without you.

  1. Halelujah!

Jason is what American Idol is SUPOSSED to be about. Rare talented people who have never had vocal training, record contracts, ect. Jason is fresh and current and is way better off without the show. He will be an incredible artist from days to come. I would love for you to have Jason on your show, John. That would be a nice thing to see. Can't wait to see his album on the shelves!
  2. This is so right on the money. You're completely right about Jason giving as much interest in the judges opinons as he ought to. Why should he bow down to the judges' every word? And you call that lack of interest?
  3. Great commentary John Norris!! I too have appreciated the charm, music and talent that Jason brought to AI. Jason was truly a breath of fresh air on AI.

In my opinion, Jason is the winner. I always thought American Idol was a platform for new, undiscovered talent. Well, David Cook has 6 CD's for purchase on Amazon, David Archuleta won Starsearch and was being groomed by his dad for AI for 6 years, Syesha was an actress, Carly Smithson, Kristy Lee Cook & Michael Johns previously put out failed CD's. So 6 of the top 10 were already seasoned performers. Jason & Brooke were the only ones in the top 8 without previous deals? Don't get it? That's why Jason's the winner in my eyes. His talent is raw and genuine!!

I didn't watch this week but will probably watch the finale only to see Jason perform. By the judges very public remarks, I knew early on who they would push through for the top two. No surprises on the David/David thing. I'm sure commercials, billboards, posters, etc. were created weeks ago to plug the finale.

I don't get the hype of David A. He's a cute little zombie - a "stepford singer" if you will. He's like a 17 year old Perry Como. Somebody needs to take that boy out - get him laid, crank back a bottle of Jack Daniels down his throat, push him off a cliff and let him hang glide, make him watch some porn, cut the line to his brakes and tell him to maneuver down a steep mountain AND THEN INVITE HIM BACK TO SING. Perhaps then, the depth will kick in.

Looking forward to hearing Jason on the radio and on his CD's in the near future. He's got a great head on his shoulders and will do very well in the industry!!
  4. Sorry, you got it all wrong. Jason was a boring twanger...just like all the rest. And his goofy "Ah, shucks" attitude was annoying...just like all the rest.
  5. Again, Amen, Brother! Well written article. Jason added the pizazz and had his own fan base who actually understood the phrase, "I was thinking Bob Marely." He was trying to have fun and, I think, it got a little stuffy for his style and he needed and wanted out. I'd go listen to a Jason Castro concert in the park any day. It's all about making the connection with audience and building your fan base. Not all music is for everyone. That's why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream. We are all different. I didn't see Jason sticking around the audience after this dismissal. He must have taken the 4:20 flight back home!
  6. Are you people CRAZY? Did you actually LISTEN to JC singing? Yes, he's cute and fresh, but the dude sucked about 90% of the time. The fact that he was still there and the likes of Carly Smithson and Brooke White were gone is a joke! This is a TALENT competition, not a "fresh, new sounding awesome dude" competition.
  7. John you are so amazing to "catch" this whole thing on AI.
Jason Castro was the most refreshing, real, talent that I have ever witnessed on AI.
My family and I have been mesmerized with his genuine raw talent and emotion.
We only watched AI to see this boy sing and share his soul.
We were proud to see him stay true and not take himself or this show so serious.....Its a Singing Competition.
We are excited for him and all those that will share his music in the future. What Joy and Fun her brought each week to that stage.
    Awesome review.
  8. I'm so happy to know that I am not the only one feeling 'sad and empty'. Since Jason's elimination from AI I've never been the same. I do however have one disagreement. I don't believe I Shot The Sheriff was a big FU to AI. I saw Jason's interview before the show and he was pretty excited about it and said,"It's gonna be good!" I think Jason saw the other contestants getting praise from the judges from previous performances on 'bringing life' to their songs, and I think Jason did the same. I think it backfired because we're not used to Jason doing anything but sit, or stand with his guitar. I personally think I Shot The Sheriff performance was nothing short of total brilliance, and am so surprised that others don't feel the same way. I think that even amongst our own (Jason fans), that the criticism he was taking actually started altering some of our own opinions. If you watch that performance again, I'm sure you will all see that I'm right. It's amazing. And we didn't get it, at first. It's just another awesome performance by Jason Castro.
  9. Thank you for this site...where Jason Castro fans can go to compare notes. Big J, please don't let ANYONE change you. Keep loving what you do..the WAY you do it... because you are what we want to hear!
  10. John, you're definitely an honorary DREADHEAD! Totally agree with you...miss Jason sooooo much!! He was the only reason I watched. I wish Jason all the best and will patiently wait for his album. GO JASON!!!
  11. You nipped it in the bud. Jason should still be on to win the lil' be-bopper that demolished a great song 'Imagine'. Go sing High School Musicals for the teens.!! And Cook, well... He sounds like all the other comtemp rock artist already with just not the heart. Jason's got the groove & HECK A HOT - unique style WILL give many listener's joy, comfort and peace when he does record. Release a New CD for me to listen to Jason.
  12. you people are just so sad, seriously..I will admit by the beginning of the show, he was amazing and I really liked him, but then the cheesy picks, same old s*** and no effort made me hate him

seriously if you call that talent, then you people got serious problems, he sucked, he was worthless, he didn't put anything into the songs and he has no talent. END OF STORY.

I would roll my eyes everytime that loser came on to sing, he was awful and its a breathe of FRESH AIR that hes gone, and theres actually ones who deserve to be on there, who are there to sing and to win

this show isn't about popularity, its about singing, Jason couldn't sing, so thats why he was gone.

The show is for the best singers, and Jason wasn't one, at least now its down to the two best singers and I can't wait to see who wins

hate me or not losers, I don't care, my opinion stands

    JASON CASTRO SUCKED.
    END OF STORY
  13. "Interesting Latest Music News" pshh u get your info for entertainment sites? lol.thats like asking a politician to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth.idol is politics.garbage!
  14. Oh yeah

    and one more thing--

the only reason why that dreadlock loser stayed on for so longer is because of his teeny bopper fanbase

    so sad.

it felt like Sanjya [sp] all over again -rolls eyes-

    anyways
    Jason sucked
    glad hes gone
    cause he was pathetic

and your all morons for praising him like he was the best one, you all have a mental #$@#@ loose

but what do you expect from teeny boppers

    GET OVER IT ALREADY
hes gone..quit dwelling on what could of been and definetly never would of been, and move on with your lives

    losers.

    HAHHAHHAHAAH
  15. and you guys can hate me or whatever, but I don't care

I won't be waisting my time writing back to lame insults, cause they'll be childish "lets defend jason" insults and ill just laugh at your pettiness
  16. Well said!
  17. Thank you John Norris for an insightful and fun article about AI and the positive mentions of Jason Castro.

It is weird the stats that AI puts up when just looking at hits on various pages regarding Jason tells a story of interest and fanbase.

I bought all of Jason's music from Itunes. I bought no one else's music except for Brother IZ and Jeff Buckley. I even bought the group numbers just to see Jason's efforts at dancing. The guy is joy filled, he is real and was so much fun to watch and listen to. I think he fills a market niche because if I am buying his music it is the proof of the market. (That didn't make sense did it? Someone figure out what I was trying to say please. )

Thank you again John Norris for recognizing Jason Castro, it means a lot when I have seen so much AI backed slander and spin about a guy who didn't do anything to them.
  18. Oh yeah! I am pretend High Fiving you right now! I couldn't have said it better! Idol was NEVER the same after Jason left! he truly added an awesome change to the boring same old same old! Grrrrr! Thank you for this blog!
