Fantasia Becomes a Flaming Human Hurricane — And We Think We Love Her
simonfantasiasplit

This in from MTV News West Coast editor Katie Byrne, who was on the “Idol” scene last night, and witnessed the shocking force of nature that Fantasia has become:

The skin-tight bodysuit. The flaming red hair. The faux makeout session with Ryan Seacrest. One thing’s for sure: Fantasia made one heck of an impact during a frenetic performance of her new single “Bore Me” on last night’s “Idol.”

Being in the audience for the gale-force performance, the first thing I noticed was the stunned silence and gaping mouths — none more so than Simon Cowell’s, as evidenced in an instant-classic cutaway shot of him as soon as the Season Three Idol hit the stage with her bootylicious backup dancers.

And a funny thing happened as the madness rolled on: The squeaky-clean ArchAngels, the parents with young children, and basically the whole friggin’ crowd started eating it up. ‘Tasia has a way of not giving you the option to like or dislike her; you just take her for what she is. And we were all immediately back under her spell, as if she were singing “Summertime” for the first time.

But this wasn’t our “Summertime” songstress from ‘03. Pieces of her were there, to be sure, but it was like she was possessed by the ghost of James Brown — and I mean that in a good way. Seeing the performance makes me want to hug every prescient “Idol” voter who saw the down-and-dirty diva that this powerhouse would become.

So what did you think of Hurricane ‘Tasia? And are you as excited as I am for the storm to hit a town near you?

  1. I did not like her performance. I could not understan a word that she was saying. Any idol winner could have put on a bodysuit and yelled like that if they had the right back up..Totally ridiculous. Help me understand what I was supposed to like about the performance.

    Help !
  2. Fantasia will be a LEGEND! She is so damn amazing! I fricken love her..this season needed someone with energy! Thank You Fantasia!
  3. ENERGY! WORKING A STAGE! Be honest, could you ever understand a word James Brown sang!? Raw and unpolished, yes, but I thought it was fun.
  4. I have to admit I did not like the red hair (I think she is beautiful) but the body was slamming and she sounded amazing. As the poster said before me, she will be a legend folks are not ready for what she put on them but they better get ready...Fantasia is here to stay.

  12. Fantasia ROCKED!!! it she is the best entertainer
I love watching her perform and I am so happy that she has stepped up her game I have been waiting for this Fantasia Just like Ashford of Ashford and Simpson told you "you FANTASTIC!!)
  13. I totally loved Fantasia last night, too! Her natural and exuberant energy, her performing talent, her originality and stage presence. She was awesome crazy FUN!!! She made the show worth watching. Otherwise, it would have been one of the most boring Idol nights ever. I really think Fantasia saved the show last night and gave everybody a lesson of what a true Idol should be about. She will be a music legend. I am buying her new CD.
  14. I didn't like it at first because it was too fast and I couldn't pick up on the lyrics but by midway, my ears and brain had caught up to her and I was blown away. I remember then cutting away to Simon and he had this "wtf look on his face"! She needs to bottle up some of that energy and send it my way!
  15. fantasia=afro.punk
    she rawked it!
  16. she was really really great she reminds me of Miss Aretha franklin just AN Awsome powerhouse u go girl great great performance
  17. You would have to pay me (a lot) to listen to that garbage again. Fantasia go home, you stink.
  18. I'm a happily married woman and even I thought Fantasia was hot, hot, hot with her flaming red hair and boppin' bootie. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED her and the performance she gave. Reminded me of why I once loved American Idol. I sure wish AI would bring more contestants like her back to the show. She was AWESOME!
  19. A real uggo.
  20. To compare her jibberish to James Brown is a joke.
I couldn't stand her when she won Idol, even though she was the best that year. The backup singers sang, she just screamed and shook her way-to-big-butt around. Nasty look, nasty sausage suit, nasty song. I had the same look on my face as Simon. Energy?? It's called CRACK people.
  21. Fantasia Barrino. Ah, you truly are an original! I wish i could have seen you in the Color Purple. You've brought tears to my eyes many times, unearthed deep seated lust for you, and now you've made me groove in a way i though not possible. And those dancers/singers behind you! Oman...whew. Oh Simon too, you make the show a classic with your own stage brilliance!
  22. At the very least, no one can deny she really knows how to grab your attention. I think she is the best entertainer from all the AI winners. C'mon compare her to robotic Carrie Underwood... Carrie seriously has no emotion. Fantasia knows how to rip the stage.
  23. She looked and sounded EXACTLY like Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker's character in "The Fifth Element".

My jaw was dropped just like Simon's. Absolutely horrific performance from an extremely unattractive (wo)man.
  24. I am soooo excited to see her back on the stage. I saw her do an amazing job in the Color Purple and I'm excited to see where she is going with her next album. Fantasia is the GREATEST stage performer of our time. If you go on youtube, every performance she has, there has yet to be a note off key or pitchy. She may scream, but it is still in key with the music. That is very rare. I don't think I can name another music artist today who can claim that except maybe Beyonce. I love them both and I love Fantasia's new look and I think Simon was just processing the amazing talent that he saw...if you were watching AI before she came out, it was very dull and boring but as soon as she came out she took over everything...You go 'Tasia
  25. I did not see the performance but i knew fantasia showed out i been with her since day one she was on idol and i aint gon stop now (for leftout shut up if you coul'nt understand the you should'nt commented on anything i got the cd and i could understand every word she said quite hatin on her thats one thing i cant stand your a nobody...........she can sing better than you she's blessed in all good ways
  26. I thought her performance was Terrible. I was shocked because I was one of her fans when She was on American Idol. (Big disapointment)
  27. OMG, her stylist should be shot first. Poor things put a bunch of weight, or just too tight of a body suit. The song had a cute beat though.
She looked like bozo the clown doing the super chicken dance !! She screamed the entire song, and no one could understand a word she was saying.
I was really embarrased for her.
  28. I thought that her performance--whether you liked it or not--was pushing music to another direction and was challenging prevalent concepts of beauty. I loved it.
  29. Wow, I bet if she auditioned for the show with a performance like that... she would not have even gotten a golden ticket!

I thought it was completely revolting. I was ashamed for her to see what she has done with her fame.
  30. I love Fantasia and think she always brings a sense of energy and creativity with her performances. Having said that, what happened? It was screaming or screeching at best. It was a throw-back to an MC Hammer performance put a lot of people on the stage even when it does not make sense musically -- seriously - the guy rapping??? Did she owe him a favor? It's great to be versatile and have range, but I think it left me confused, questioning the arrangement (if it qualifies as one) and wondering what professional would endorse this performance.

For me, Fantasia missed the mark big time but maybe she was going for publicity/attention - even bad attention gets the music world talking.
  31. I'm with Simon.... still have a blank stare on my face. Ugh.....
  32. As Simon says in his better moments, I thought it was absolutely brilliant. To the person who said, "the guy rapping???" What video were you watching? He was singing, not rapping. You think because it's a black man it must be rapping?

The negative response is all from a bunch of plebs and philistines who wouldn't know talent if it walked up and bit them. I can't wait to see what Fantasia does next!
  33. I disliked her styling that night, but love Fantasia to pieces. She rocks a stage.

And that song happens to be one of my favorites on the album. I've even been caught humming it in the Target while shopping. Very catchy track.
  34. Fantasia performance on season 7 of AI sucked. She screamed/shouted/yelled the song. It sounded like she was singing/screaming the song in a language that wasn't English. The only word that was understandable was "yeah" which Fantasia screamed throughout the song. Her apperance was terrible. Red hair? She needs to fire her hair stylist. When she was competing on AI, during most of her performances she sounded like she had inhaled helium before she sang.
