New ‘90210′ Stars the Kid From ‘The Wire,’ And We Are Depressed, Enraged, Confused

There are a few surreal things about the remake/spin-off/whatever of “90201,” set to hit the venerable CW this fall: 1) it has been produced; 2) it stars Lucille from “Arrested Development” as the tipsy-but-wealthy grandma; and 3) we repeat, it has been produced.

Oh, wait — there’s more. And here’s the point of this post:

The new series stars Tristan Wilds from “The Wire” as one of the Beverly Hills crew. Yeah, that’s right: the kid from “The Wire”.

How is this possible? What the heck kind of nightmare of a career misstep is this? Wilds goes from playing a breakout role in THE GREATEST TELEVISION SERIES OF ALL TIME (admit it: “The Sopranos” trailed off, and you know it), and he parlays that into playing a brat on a remake of a teen soap that was kind of major for the 90s generation? Oof. Who’s his agent? And will be receiving counseling from Jennie Garth…?

Check out the terrifying season promo above.

  1. First off, this looks like a really bad version of Gossip Girl. Second, there were TOO MANY white belts in that clip.
  2. Know what's more depressing? Your 90210 rip-off "The Hills" is the most watched thing on a "music television" channel that barely plays music. Snark on that.
  3. 90210 will kick "The Hills" or any MTV programing any day of the week. And it hasn't even aired yet. Don't hate cause it looks so damn good! LOL
  4. say it ain't so! eek!
  5. IT IS NOT GOING TO DO AS WELL AS THE ORIGINAL 90210, YOU CANT REPLACE THE CAST, THEY WERE TO GOOD
  6. this is like the 100th time ive read someone say this. exposure! everything tristan is going to be in isn't gonna be high in quality like the wire.

michael b jordan (wallace) was on the show too, and he turned around adn did a straight to dvd movie.

all the actors on the wire aren't gonna go off to do oscar worthy roles right away. besides, this will get him more exposure and get his name and face out there.

quality wise it's a misstep, but exposure wise it's not.
  7. WHAT ARE YOU, RETARDED??! YES The Wire is one of the best written shows to ever hit the airways and Michael Lee was an incredible character to play. But that's over now. Landing this role on 90210 is a big feather on his resume toward his climb to super stardom. Do you know ANYTHING about this kid's credentials? Before he even came to The Wire he was on the stage. Doing 90210 will give him that crossover appeal and show yet again how versatile he really is. Remember BH90210 was one of the biggest shows on television for 10 YEARS! This will give him the exposure necessary to be considered for movie roles he might not have been considered for just coming off of The Wire. And think about this, Wilds is the only actor coming off of The Wire to land a lead role in another series. This kid is definitely on his way. And 90210 is just the stepping stone he needs to take him where he needs to be. What?? He's supposed to be Michael Lee for the rest of his life??? That's called PIGEON HOLING and it's a definite career killer!!

I for one am looking forward to see what he does with this role and where it takes him next.
  8. Black actors in hollywood are lucky to get a job, any job. The Wire was an amazing show, but so many of the talented people on that show are struggling for their next pay check. Give the kid a break. If he was not doing this show, then what would he be doing? He would be looking for his next check!! This kid is talented and smart. I hope his character on 90210 is hit. Back off him,
