Here's something you probably didn't know about MTV Newsers: A lot of us are hard-core soccer fans (sorry, Tim Kash — I meant to say "football"!). And every day for the past two weeks, most of our Newsroom TVs have been locked on the UEFA European Football Championships, where between 2:30 and 5 p.m. you'll hear loud, intermittent "UGH!!"s, "ARRGGGHH!!"s and, of course, "GOOOOAAAAAALLLL!!"s from our most faithful footie followers.
Of course, if you happen to be in Austria or Switzerland right now you're also bound to hear this: "DUUUUH, DUH-DUH DUH-DUH-DUUUUUUUUUH!"
Huh?? Well, according to Reuters, the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" has been adopted as the unofficial theme song of the European Cup. How did this happen? Well, at first, the opening guitar riff was "sung" by fans when the teams walked onto the pitch. Now, reportedly, it's heard not only throughout the games, but anywhere else that copious drinking and shirtless pogo dancing is permitted. Oh, how I wished I planned my vacation more wisely!
Here's a clip of what I'm talking about...And here...
Perhaps not surprisingly, the tournament's "official" songs, Enrique Iglesias' "Can You Hear Me" and Shaggy's "Feel the Rush," have failed to generate the same spirited reactions.
Could Jack White have penned the next jock-rock classic, like Ricky Martin's "Cup of Life" (a.k.a. "Ole! Ole! Ole!"), Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)" and Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll Part 2"? Or is this just a weird European thing? Let us know ... and include your Euro final predictions!
