I'm a pretty new addition to MTV News. I've only been here for seven months, but last night, for the second time since I started working at this crazy place, I ended up as a dancer in a major music video (the first time was in MGMT's "Electric Feel" clip). Now when I say dancer, it's not the kind you're thinking. For some reason, in my case it always involves totally over-the-top dance moves and even more insane outfits.
Last night, I went to help out on MTV Tr3s' interview of Mexican rock band Kinky. Their new single, "Bailar Hasta Quemarnos" — which translates into "dance until we burn out" — is all about, you guessed it, dancing your butt off.
The video for the single stayed absolutely true to that theme. Not only did the band do a little bit of dancing, but they incorporated what looked like up to 30 different types of dancers, from a grass-skirted hula girls and breakdancers to Vegas showgirls and a 60-year-old Jewish man named Buddy. Thanks to plenty of persuasion from the band and my MTV co-workers, one of those dancers ended up being me, and I am no dancer.
After our interview with the band, Gil, the lead singer, came up and asked if any of us wanted to be in the video. How could I turn that down? Within the hour, I was in a bright-silver dress, full makeup, stockings with clouds on them and some very '90s sunglasses and learning the essential dance moves from the choreographer.
In the end, they filmed my scene, and I didn't fall. As far as my dancing skills are concerned, that's a success — plus, I had a great time.
Side note: I am a huge dork, and I have been listening to the song all day long. If you haven't heard any Kinky, you should check out their MySpace page.
