It's not often that a kid from Iowa gets free reign over a big Hollywood studio. And while that wasn't entirely the case, there were sure moments when it felt that way last week.
Like last Wednesday.
A couple of us got it in our heads that it'd be cool to watch our red carpet build in time-lapse. Because it's an impressive feat, to be sure: dozens of carpenters, electricians and set builders, thousands of feet of steel, cable, 2 x 4s and red carpet. This year's took a week to build out (and just a few hours to tear down).
So there we were, a couple of news geeks storming the Paramount Theater, slipping through a side door, climbing some stairs, popping a hatch in the women's room, and scrambling to the roof. The view was pretty impressive with the historic back lot and famed water tower laid out before us, and the Hollywood Hills in the distance.
With just an Internet connection, DV camera and a contraption called a Tricaster, we webcast the build for five days. And now that it's all over, well, here it is: the 2008 Video Music Awards red carpet in 62 seconds. Enjoy!
