Think you had a productive summer? Try penning an original orchestra and staging your very first performance at UCLA's prestigious Royce Hall. That's what Mike Einziger — resident guitarist for Incubus — did.
It all started in March 2007, after carpal tunnel syndrome forced Mike to take a break from the band and undergo surgery on his wrist. Years of constant playing and repetitive motion finally took a toll on his body. Mike was unable to touch his guitar for three months, and to keep himself from going crazy he decided to approach this project, titled "End.>vacuum."
After a year of work, Mike was ready for his first run-through with a full orchestra, and that's where we caught up with him in late August. It was just days before the big show, and Mike was both nervous and excited. Check it out below.
And for you Incubus fans who are nervous about the band's future, Mike hasn't quit his day job. He assures us that they'll be back in the studio most likely by the end of next summer. To pass the time he'll be studying musical composition at a little East Coast school called Harvard — perhaps you've heard of it?
