It was complete and utter chaos as Bow Wow brought his Walk Across America tour to New York City on Friday. MTV News hung out with the rapper for seven hours (most of it on foot) to cover the event, designed to encourage young people to vote.
Our day with Bow Wow started at Long Island University in downtown Brooklyn, where he spoke to students about why it's more important than ever to vote. In a short interview on campus, he told us that the economy is the number-one issue because the recession is affecting young peoples' daily lives. "I want [students] to feel comfortable when they go to class and not have to worry about no student loans, no credit, no high gas prices," he said.
After a short break for lunch at Junior's in Brooklyn, the walkathon continued. Masses of teenage girls swarmed Bow Wow, snapping photographs and chasing him down Fulton Street. Next stop was the Brooklyn Bridge, where we linked up with Michelle Williams and walked from Brooklyn to Manhattan. Bow was surrounded by four bodyguards, so it was quite difficult for my cameraman, Akshay, to get clear shots of him. At the end of the bridge on the Manhattan side, Bow hopped into his black SUV and headed up to Harlem for a Q&A session with fans at the Hip Hop Culture Center.
By the end of the day, even my legs were sore, so I can't imagine how Bow Wow must've felt. He'd been up since 5 a.m. doing TV and radio appearances before marching through the city. I guess that's why they pay him the big bucks.
