The Black Lips have issues with some recent reports of their canceled tour of India — including our report from earlier today, which said the initial report of the incident was slightly exaggerated — so we got on the phone with frontman Cole Alexander to set the record straight.
Alexander, who said the reports have become a "bit like a game of telephone," confirmed the grittier specifics about the gig, — the semi-nakedness, bandmembers making out with each other, etc. He said the band had been "frustrated" by the lack of audience response at earlier shows in the tour, and decided: "Let's show them!"

"SNL" cast member Andy Samberg and his two writing partners/collaborators, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, are releasing a comedy LP entitled Incredibad on February 10. Since this is the trio responsible for all the great digital shorts airing each week on "SNL" — such as "Lazy Sunday" and "Ras Trent" — I headed across town a few hours ago to ask them a few questions.
After sitting in the waiting room for 20 minutes with a few other interviewers, listening to the uncensored version of "Natalie's Rap" (which features the pint-sized Natalie Portman rapping about wanting to "f--- all night"), I was ushered into a room where the trio was waiting for me.
Being the well-respected journalist and television producer that I am, I put forth an intellectual, thought-provoking query to the comedic threesome, in hopes they would share with me an enlightened response about their work.

It's generally been a good rule of thumb when dealing with transactions — monetary and otherwise — to cut out the middleman. If you are selling widgets, you want to go directly to the customer so you may offer the most enticing price; if you are a customer in the market for widgets, you do not want to pay the markup that comes from dealing with others besides the seller. This is Economics 101.
But in the business of creativity, specifically music, sometimes the archetype known as "the middleman" is welcome.
Case in point: Lil Wayne needs a middleman.

"MTV Detox" is a daily Web show on MTV.com that recaps the network's primetime programming. Hosted by the ultimate MTV superfan (and MTV News' resident pop-culture expert) Jim Cantiello, "Detox" features the wildest happenings from that evening's show lineup, punctuated by hilarious commentary from its host. Stream the show daily from your mobile phone and on MTV.com. New episodes air Sunday - Thursday at 11 p.m. ET.
On Monday night, "Detox" host Jim Cantiello shared a lot with the home viewing audience: He shared his love for Olivia Palermo (please go on Jim's show!), he shared his love for designer jeans thanks to the "Bromance" crew (and got props for them from the show's guest, "Project Runway" contestant Malan Breton), and he shared his lack of charm for winning over Vanessa from "Daddy's Girls." And, for better or for worse, Jim showed us what he looks like sans pants. (We love you Jim, but that was too much sharing!) Head here for more … if you dare!

Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was undoubtedly the sparkplug member of TLC. Her energy was endless. So much so that the pint-size rapper felt her creativity couldn't be limited to her trademark 16-bar rushes that turned Chili and T-Boz's sultry vocals into titanic hits.
Left Eye tried to break out as a solo star on a number of occasions. Her first attempt, Supernova, was shelved in the States by her then-label, Arista, which only released the project overseas. Later, Left Eye ventured out West and landed with Los Angeles-based Death Row Records under the perplexing pseudonym N.I.N.A. That project, like her first, never saw the light of day. Next, as we all unfortunately know by now, the female MC died in a car accident in Honduras. Read More...

Why is it that when someone gets famous, they feel the need to share with the world their sob story of being bullied at school? And why is it that we're supposed to feel bad for them, when most people were bullied at school and they don't end up rich and famous?
Taylor Swift is now one of those people on the "cry me a river" list. Recently, Blake Lively of "Gossip Girl" had the distinction of making the list when the very pretty blonde complained to Vogue about how she was made fun of in school. Now, in March's Teen Vogue, Swift (who also happens to be a very pretty blonde ... a trend perhaps?) is complaining that she, too, suffered the wrath of mean girls.
"Junior high was actually sort of hard, because I got dumped by this group of popular girls," the singer/songwriter told Teen Vogue. "They didn't think I was cool or pretty enough, so they stopped talking to me.

If you live in the U.K. or are a diehard fan of bludgeoning-yet-strangely-surgical metal, you are probably already aware that on Monday, BBC Radio premiered "Divinations," the first single from Mastodon's upcoming Crack The Skye album, due next month. This is a reason to rejoice!
Anyway, here in the Newsroom, both myself and producer Daniel "Monty" Montalto were beyond pumped. Neither of us are English, but we are both huge fans of awesome stuff, and Mastodon most certainly falls into that category. We've already written a couple of blog posts about Crack The Skye, so inspired by "Divinations" — a song which is lots of things, inspiring being about 10 of them — we decided to do another one. Here are our real-time reactions to the song, as it blasted on my cruddy computer speakers and annoyed everyone within earshot (Mastodon are awesome for that, too):
Monty: [As the song opens with some decidedly evil-sounding banjo]: "Woah. Are those banjos? This is like hilbilly metal."
me: "It's like technical hillbilly metal. There's a lot going on with this song. It kind of sounds like four songs in one." Read More...

A few hours after we posted a story about the Black Lips' recent antics in India, the Lips gave another official story of what went down in the depths of India.
In an interview with Vice, the Atlanta punks say some of the original story they posted in their blog — in which they said they escaped through an emergency exit with security and possibly the police on their heels — was exaggerated. So, while lead singer Cole Alexander did expose himself and make out with guitar player Ian St. Pé, no charges were ever filed and there was no police involvement over the riotous show, though the tour's funding was subsequently pulled by the promoter.
Exactly why the band exaggerated some of its original claims is still a bit unclear. Read More...

Scarlett Johansson, you are a lovely young actress. Why is it also your mission to prove to the world that you are a singer?
First, you sang at Coachella with the Jesus and Mary Chain, which was OK because you were hardly audible, and it was that song from "Lost in Translation." Then you released that Tom Waits cover album — because you have a deep voice? Some people thought it was OK, but I just don't think someone new to music should tackle anything that weighty.
When we spoke to you in December, you said you probably wouldn't want to do another album of covers. Instead, you'd tackle your own original material. That might be interesting, since your life certainly can't be boring, and you might have some insights to share about being a hot young Hollywood star. Read More...
