Britney Spears kept things sexy as the ringmaster at her Circus tour kickoff in New Orleans Tuesday night. The singer clad herself in fishnets, sparkles and a stone-encrusted bra and corset — and that's nothing out of the ordinary for a woman who has spent most of her career dancing on stages (and in cages) flanked by sweaty, toned men.
(Check out photos of the Circus here.)
These were many of the key elements to which that Britney stayed true when she finally debuted her much anticipated tour. But we noticed a few elements that seemed better suited to other pop stars.
For one, take the ringmaster jacket adorned with (fake?) fur epaulets. Many of you may remember it as a look that Killers frontman/fashionista Brandon Flowers debuted not long ago when the band released Day & Age. His shoulder pads, much to PETA's dismay, were made of feathers, but someone in Britney's camp (we're assuming it's her costume designers, DSquared2) must have loved the way that jacket looked and felt it would translate well for Britney. The jury is still out. That goes for Brandon, too.

Second, and maybe I'm alone in thinking this, but Britney's cop uniform seemed to be a vague throwback to the one that a Mr. George Michael wore in his post-arrest-for-sex-in-a-bathroom music video, "Outside." Why I have equated these looks is beyond me. As we all know, performers have a storied history of dressing as sexy cops (is there any other kind?) to suit some strange fantasy that might exist only in the minds of the people who run the Party City franchise.

In fact, those may be the same minds who created Britney Spears, so perhaps it isn't that strange after all.
