LOS ANGELES — While MTV News' visit to the set of "Dancing With the Stars" Thursday didn't feature a lot of dancing, we did get to speak with "Jackass" star Steve-O about his recent back injury, which will probably complicate his appearance on the show next week.
"We're working on figuring out the routine — and not doing a whole lot of it because my back's hurting me a lot," Steve-O told MTV News. He said he's not sure exactly how the injury happened. "My back is spasming and a nerve's been pinched and it's a big nightmare. We've got this really physical routine that's loaded up with stunts and tricks, and we're kinda waiting to practice them, maybe until we're on live TV," he said.
The "Jackass" star added that he's consulted a physical therapist and was heading to a chiropractor after our interview. He then took a moment to write the following statement on his BlackBerry (we even helped him spell "inflammation"!).
"A physical therapist has told me that nerves are being pinched in my back and it is in spasms because of inflammation related to torn muscles," the statement reads. "I'm doing everything I can to let it heal; icing it, taking Advil, drinking water, visiting a chiropractor, and continuing to be worked on by the physical therapist. I'm still rehearsing every day, but walking through my salsa routine, rather than practicing the physical stunts and tricks that are incorporated into it. It is going to be a risky routine that I hope to pull off."
So is this the dreaded "Dancing With the Stars" curse? Steve-O's dance partner, Lacey Schwimmer, doesn't think so. While she was walking through her routine with Steve-O, she told us that injuries often occur when non-dancers are put through a strong regimen. When it comes time for the live performance, the extra kick of adrenaline usually helps get a dancer through an injury, she added.
Where then does this whole experience rank with the stunts Steve-O's did on "Jackass" and "Wildboyz"?
"Having a bear lick honey off my nipples scares me less," Steve-O said.
