MTV News caught up with Big Boi on Thursday, just before he tried his hand at Nirvana's "In Bloom" on "Rock Band" (and "tried his hand" is being generous), and we spoke about a whole bunch of stuff, including the progress of his long-delayed solo album, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, his cameo on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (he played a slick-talking rapper who runs afoul of a Russian smuggler and is killed by a hyena -- seriously) and, of course, Outkast.

More specifically, the status of Outkast's new album. And while Boi wasn't about to reveal everything about the group's follow-up to 2006's Idlewild, he didn't exactly leave us hanging, either.

What's he got to say? Read on. Read More...

So we've been busy as heck down here in Austin this week, shooting tons of interviews all around town for SXSW, but unfortunately, I still haven't had much time to see many shows.

Luckily, the clouds are clearing and the stars are aligning and it seems like today just might be the day where I get to see actual music (not only that, but if all goes according to plan, I'm gonna see some-odd sixteen bands and full sets to boot, scattered at 5 or 6 different venues around town.

You can follow all my progress live throughout the day as I run my butt around town too. Red Bull and sunscreen will surely be my best friends.

What's my schedule looking like? There's not many major artists on today's SXSW schedule (other than Rick Ross and the rumored Kanye West performance - which the rest of our team will be rockin') - so I'm gonna be checking out a lot of great stuff bubblin' around the underground.

"Only [he] can get away with something like this."

Charles Hamilton's process of playing shows and putting out music has something you won't find with other artists, a truly personal touch. We caught up with the rapper at the primarily short-shorts and western shirted SXSW conference in Austin, Texas. He gave us the low down on his plan for his hip hop roll out in 2009.

The self described Hamiltonization Process lays out a unique schedule of mixtapes, songs and tour dates. "I'm literally coming directly to you" said the MC. But what's different in his approach is the nonchalant attitude and confidence he displays. "What I've been doing here at SXSW, is chillin'. [I'm] not looking for much attention. [I'm] enjoying the death metal bands and going to the hip hop spots here and there. [I'm] really just enjoying the environment."

This relaxed style of interaction seems to be working. Read More...

South By Southwest is a big deal. Which is why MTV News sent our A-Team down to Austin to cover it ... A crack squad of writers, producers and electronics experts (plus a token indie snob), on a mission to deliver you the best moments from the biggest music festival in the U.S.

Over the next 96 hours, our Team will be blogging their brains out, interviewing their a--es off, and checking out bands, both big and small. They will probably also eat at some point. Sleep is not an option. Sunstroke definitely is.

It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it. And as such, we figured you'd like to know more about the brave men and women who are forgoing shut eye and leaving their loved ones behind to bring you the news and events of SXSW 2009.

So, let's the final two members of the team, shall we? Read More...

Did you know that we made it back to the hotel at 5:30 this morning?

And that, when we finally woke up this am, it was actually nearly pm? Oh, and our Flixwagon phones are no longer working?

I'm telling you all of this in an attempt to explain why a) Our Saturday Breakfast Briefing is actually more of a Brunch Briefing; and b) we have no video to go with said briefing.

Still, that doesn't mean we didn't actually have a meeting, because after a very hectic Friday night -- including performances by Metallica and Asher Roth -- we needed to regroup, because Saturday is shaping up to be just as big.

For a full rundown of the final day at South By Southwest (Kanye West!), keep reading below. Read More...

South by Southwest has gradually become more and more hip-hop-infused. Asher Roth, Big Boi, Charles Hamilton and Kid Cudi have already made appearances for the indie crowd this year. Tonight, at Emo's on 6th street, the Black Lips fans were treated to a special guest performance from Wu-Tang Clan's very own GZA.

The garage-punk, flower-rock band opened with a straight, simmering groove. The seemingly indie rock crowd went wild when Lips' bass player, Jared Swilley, introduced their guest. And GZA came out swinging.

After rapping over a crescendoing jam the band had built, the MC asked to share a little something he had written for his friend and late Wu-Tang member Ol' Dirty Bastard. Luckily, MTV News had a camera. Check this out:

The title just about says it all.

For 90 very loud minutes on Friday night, South by Southwest was taken over by the godfathers of thrash, the lords of loud ... none other than freakin' Metallica, who packed 'em in at Stubb's for an exclusive "Guitar Hero" gig.

They were supposed to be a surprise guest (on SXSW's official schedule, they were listed as Volsung, a metal band from "Somewhere, Norway"), but early in the week, the word got out that Metallica was coming to town, and the buzz began to build ... was it true?

Well, after the jump, we've got your proof. Read More...

On director Craig Brewer's new Web series $5 Cover, Amy LaVere portrays a real-life Memphis Belle, a sweet-voiced singer-songwriter who pens songs in her underwear and has had her heart broken one too many times.

In the real world, she's exactly the same. Though we can't vouch for the whole underwear thing.

Growing up on the Texas/Louisiana border, LaVere drifted to Detroit as a teenager, fronted a punk act, then eventually landed in Memphis, where she released a Country-tinged solo album and eventually caught the eye of Brewer, who cast her in his 2007 film "Black Snake Moan" (she also had a roll as Rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson in the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk The Line"). But acting isn't her first love ... music is.

Which is why, despite her burgeoning film career, LaVere shifted her focus back to writing and recording. She didn't want to be known just as the pretty little actor/musician with the upright bass ... this was Memphis, after all. And cute doesn't cut it.

For more on LaVere, read on. Read More...

Last May we trekked into the northwest to scope out the vibrant Portland music scene, where we got a chance to preview some new tracks from The Thermals in their practice space.

Now, almost a year later, their album "Now We Can See" is finally coming out in stores on April 7th. Perfect timing for a promotional run through at SXSW!

We met up with Hutch Harris here in Austin to see exactly what took so long. He told us the wait mostly had to do with the business aspect of which label would put out the disc and that was with recording was wrapped and finished. They still didn't know what label would put it out. Kill Rock Stars got the honors in the end, "they just had the best deal and had everything going on. They just moved to Portland", Harris explained.

Check out more of what Hutch said on the arduous mastering process and get a listen of some more new Thermals from their performance at SXSW after the jump!

FROM MOVIES BLOG: Summit Entertainment just released the new trailer for their upcoming horror flick "Sorority Row," and I gotta say -- I think it looks kind of awesome. Is that just me?

The movie stars Briana Evigan ("Step Up 2: The Streets"), Leah Pipes, Rumer Willis and our very own "Hills" star Audrina Patridge. (Also in the film? Carrie Fisher, which is incredible.) In the film, a remake of “The House on Sorority Row,” a group of sorority sisters accidentally cause the death of one of their own in a prank gone really, really badly. And if you watch the trailer, you see that -- spoiler alert! -- Audrina is unfortunately the one that gruesomely bites the dust.

See the trailer, hear from Audrina herself, and continue reading about "Sorority Row" at moviesblog.mtv.com....
