John Mayer has completed work on his new album (which he's calling Battle Studies) and he just debuted the record's first single on his official website (and, of course, via Twitter). Though much is always made about Mayer's guitar heroics, "Who Says" is a mellow acoustic shuffle with a real singer-songwriter bent to it (it's more "Daughters" than "Gravity"). But perhaps the most interesting aspect of the tune is its lyrical approach. While the chorus focuses squarely on a woman ("I don't remember you looking any better/But then again I don't remember you"), the verses all open with the line "Who says I can't get stoned?" Mayer — who famously smoked his way through a 2006 Rolling Stone interview — seems to be taking a stance on the nation's pot laws in an otherwise innocuous pop song.

The first verse continues: "Who says I can't get stoned?/Turn off the lights and the telephone/Me in my house alone/Who says I can't get stoned?" And the second verse begins with the line "Who says I can't be free?" Though he has joked on Twitter about no longer indulging in pot, that apparently doesn't mean he can't defend the rights of the college students and hippies who flock to his concerts.

In other album-related news, Mayer also tweeted recently about shooting the video for "Who Says" in New York City. "If you happen to be hanging out on top of the Brooklyn Bridge right now," he wrote last week, "by all means, please come and give a hellozie dozie!" Though there is no release date or details on the video yet, we do know that it involves a pool of some sort.

Battle Studies, Mayer's fourth album as a solo artist and the follow-up to his double-platinum Continuum, hits stores November 17.

Today sees the opening of "Surrogates," the futuristic sci-fi allegory based on the hit comic book and starring Bruce Willis. After Robert Pattinson and Dustin Diamond, Willis is by far the most popular actor here in the Newsroom. And while it has a lot to do with his many law-enforcement roles and his totally bizarre relationship with his ex-wife's new husband, at least a fraction of that devotion comes from The Return of Bruno, his debut R&B album from 1987.

Back in '87, Willis was just coming into his own as a gigantic star, as "Moonlighting" was fast becoming the most talked-about show on television (his breakout film role as John McClane in "Die Hard" was still a year off). He parlayed his sudden fame into a gateway into the music world, as he was a tremendous enthusiast of American blues and R&B. The Return of Bruno cast Willis as bartender Bruno Radolini, a sort of musical alter ego. The album contains nine covers of Motown gems plus one original composition Willis co-wrote.

In an age when Scarlett Johansson has appeared on multiple albums, it's difficult to grasp how big a deal it was for a major actor to drop into the music world. The fervor surrounding "Moonlighting" (and especially after "Die Hard" hit) actually made The Return of Bruno into a minor hit. For a brief period in 1987, Willis' cover of "Respect Yourself" was somewhat ubiquitous on radio, and the video for the clip is pretty priceless. (That being said, Willis' finest vocal performance comes from his TV ads for wine coolers.)

"Michael Jackson's This Is It" doesn't hit theaters for another couple of weeks, but the fervor surrounding the film's release is already building. Advance tickets for the film, which will only be open in theaters for a limited two week run, go on sale this Sunday (September 27), and rabid Jackson devotees have already started lining up outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles awaiting their opportunity to get their hands on the first ducats. The line happens to be in the same area as the Michael Jackson memorial wall that was set up for the tribute at the Staples Center back in July. The most hardcore fans — like Casandra Pertusio from Florida (she's the one with that tattoo) — traveled great distances to be first in line and pay their respects to the King of Pop.

"Michael Jackson's This Is It" (whose trailer premiered at the MTV Video Music Awards) opens on October 28 and will premiere simultaneously in 15 cities around the world. The soundtrack to the film, which will feature a never-before-heard Jackson song called "This Is It," hits stores on October 27.

All is not entirely copacetic in the Michael Jackson universe, however, as brother Jermaine was forced to cancel the massive tribute concert at a Viennese castle (which was supposed to take place tomorrow) after failing to secure a handful of top-tier acts for the show (despite the fact that thousands of tickets were sold).

Check out more photos from the line of fans waiting to snag the first tickets to "Michael Jackson's This Is It"!

Justin Bieber is 15 years old, from a small town in Canada and definitely having a moment. This particular moment had what felt like a bazillion little girls lined up around the Hard Rock Café in Times Square to catch Justin's performance at the third annual "Tiki Rocks the Square for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals" event in New York.

"My manager and my people got the call and I was like, 'It's an awesome organization,' so I'm here now," he told us about the chance to play a set at the event, which also featured rapper Fabolous. "I'm very excited. Fab is awesome."

We arrived to interview Justin — who had both Justin Timberlake and Usher battle it out over who would get to mentor him (Usher won!) — about his upcoming album, My World, due out in November.

We also wondered what it was like to become so famous so fast, and it seems like he hasn't yet adjusted to all the attention. It's clear that he appreciates all the opportunities that he has been given, like playing a charity event to a swarm of fanatical teenage girls. And it's also clear that he's still not used to it all yet. Which is fine, because we're sure that with all the attention he's getting these days, by the time his album hits stores on November 17, he'll be an old pro, and by the time he's 16, he'll be unstoppable.

And, in case you're not yet familiar with Justin, MTV News will be rolling out articles about and interviews with him over the coming days.

Things haven't been looking up for Jessica Simpson for a long time. Her relationship with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (which, unfortunately for Cowboys fans, hasn't helped steady Romo's throwing arm), her dog was probably devoured by coyotes (which Martha Stewart apparently thought was Simpson's fault) and ex-husband Nick Lachey is now back with his old girlfriend Vanessa Minnillo. Now her career has taken her to Uganda, where she is working on a new reality show called "The Price of Beauty," a VH1 show that actually sounds pretty interesting (it will take Simpson all over the world to meet women and explore what the meaning of "beauty" is in different cultures). But so far, she is not quite getting used to her sleeping arrangements. Simpson ,a target="blank" href="http://twitter.com/Jessicasimpson">headed to Twitter to complain about the sleeping arrangements. "Bedtime in the tent is questionable," she wrote. She then posted a picture of herself wrapped up in a mosquito net, which sort of gives the impression that she has spun a web.

Still, she is enjoying her time in Africa. "Loved my first day in Uganda, meeting incredible women filled with spirit," she wrote after a night of sleeping beneath the gauze of the mosquito net. Her travels will continue throughout the rest of the year, and "The Price of Beauty" will air some time in 2010. Simpson hasn't yet announced where else the show will take her to investigate diet fads and learn about make-up tips, but she'll no doubt keep us up to date and drop in pictures from around the world.

There are some days on the calendar that are simply loaded down with celebrity birthdays, as though some days lend more cosmic fame than others. September 25 is just such a day, as there are a number of fantastically talented, awesomely dynamic personalities who will be blowing out the candles today. Some will obviously be more festive than others. It's unlikely that T.I. (who is currently serving a 10 month prison sentence for illegal weapons possession) will have as big a party as, say, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones (she could buy an awful lot of cake with that T-Mobile money). Former UFC champion and current star of "The Ultimate Fighter" Rashad Evans is probably having a bittersweet birthday, especially considering his grudge match with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson won't be happening any time soon. Ryan Leslie can probably get himself an extra cupcake, as his hotly-anticipated second album is sure to make a splash when it hits in November. And how will Will Smith celebrate turning 41? I'm not sure how he spends his birthday, but I do know that I play "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" at my party every year.

But despite all the high-profile birthdays today, this morning's Wake-Up Video nod goes to Santigold, who is now 33 years old. Even though her debut album came out well over a year ago (and she's been putting out singles since 2007), her tunes remained ubiquitous throughout the summer, mostly thanks to that Bud Light Lime commercial that borrowed "Lights Out." It's an excellent song with a super-cool video, but now it just makes me crave a citrus-flavored lager.

Despite all the fireworks on last night's episode of "Dancing with the Stars," Miley Cyrus still grabbed the biggest headlines of the night with the short preview of the "Party in the U.S.A." video. This morning, the entire clip premiered, and it features Cyrus in short shorts and cowboy boots hanging on the back of a pickup truck and singing in front of an American flag (in a scene that reminded MTV News' Jim Cantiello of the opening scene of the 1970 biopic "Patton"). The buzz surrounding the video — the first from Cyrus' new EP Time of Our Lives — was mostly about Cyrus' sexier approach to presenting herself on video.

But we never really know what the general public is thinking until we ask them, which is why we grabbed our trusty cameras, took the elevator to the lobby and headed out into Times Square to play the video for fans and get their reactions to Cyrus' latest video. Is it a winner, or is it just too much?

The painfully unscientific results are in, and it looks like "Party in the U.S.A." has people sharply divided, with 71 percent of those polled coming down on the side of "Not feeling it." Most people found the clip to be "too sexy" and several aren't buying her transition from Disney diva to actual diva. Still, a handful of people did enjoy the video's energy and thought that the added bit of sexiness was a healthy progression for Cyrus.

What do you think? Does "Party in the U.S.A." rock or should it be rejected? Leave your thoughts in the comments or head over to Your.MTV.com to make your voice heard!

"Right now the Pussycat Dolls are on a break. It's actually a much-needed break. It's like when you're with your sisters for 24 hours a day and you need to take your own shower."

-Melody Thornton of the Pussycat Dolls, explaining to MTV News' Jim Cantiello the logic surrounding the group's current hiatus. Though the group isn't currently working together, Thornton assures fans that they will be back, and this is hardly a break-up. "Yeah, we're taking a break. No, [we're not broken up] ... everybody keeps saying that, but it's like, let me see who took a break? Dave Chappelle. Remember when Dave Chappelle took that break? OK, maybe Dave Chappelle's a bad example. What about, like, Hootie and the Blowfish?" She also assures everybody that with or without PCD, she will be working on her first love. "Well, I always tell people that I've been working since the beginning of Pussycat Dolls and making records and always staying true to my passion, which is music, 'cause I love it," she said. "Absolutely I'm making music. I love it and I'm gonna live it."

Chances are you've never heard of most of the bands playing the Midpoint Music Fest in Cincinnati this weekend (September 24-26). Hell, even I haven't heard of half the 270 acts playing in 20 venues all around downtown, and it's technically my job.

The fest, which draws around 10,000 music fans to hear mostly unsigned and up-and-coming local, national and international bands, is seeded with a handful of buzzy names like Chairlift, Extra Golden, Heartless Bastards, Sarah Borges and the Broken Shingles, Rosewood Thieves and Wussy to draw out the casual fan.

But what I love about it is that the rest of the roster put together by the city's alternative weekly, Citybeat is that it contains a variety of the weirdest, funniest, dumbest, most confounding and career-defying names you are likely to see outside of the nation's second biggest band showcase, Austin's South by Southwest.

So, for your pleasure, a few of my favorites.

» Chick Pimp, Coke Dealer at a Bar

» Detox Retox

» Come on Go With Us

» Eagle to Squirrel Variety Hour

» Blastronauts

There was a ton of buzz surrounding last night's U2 show at Giants Stadium in New Jersey last night. It wasn't so much that it was the first New York-area stop for the band's massive "360" tour (though that was a big part of it), but there was a great deal of speculation about how Bono would celebrate Jersey folk hero Bruce Springsteen's 60th birthday yesterday. After all, it seemed as though it would be impossible for the group to play a show without tipping their collective hat to the Boss.

While Springsteen didn't step on the stage at Giants Stadium during the over two hour show, Bono did wish Bruce a happy birthday and swapped out "she" for "he" during the chorus of "She's the One." MTV News' Rachel Josue was at the show live and snagged a bit of video, so jam on "Mysterious Ways" while you get your belated birthday card together for Jersey's favorite son.
