Kenna, Jessica Biel, Lupe Fiasco Begin Climb Up Kilimanjaro For ‘Summit On The Summit’

When futurist musician Kenna does something, he really takes it all the way. That’s why in order to raise awareness for clean water, he decided the best way to get everyone’s attention was through a project called Summit on the Summit, wherein he will ascend to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. He’s not alone, as he’s taken fellow stars and activists Jessica Biel, Lupe Fiasco, Santigold and others up with him.

The group launched their trek on Thursday (January 7), and in a call to MTV News via satellite phone, Kenna said that things are going well despite some already treacherous terrain. “It was a bit harder than I expected,” said Kenna, who attempted to climb the same mountain five years ago and fell about a thousand feet short of the 19,340-foot summit. “The route we took was more difficult, with more rocks. We had to cross a river a few times, and there were more ups and downs than the first time I did it.”

Back in November, MTV News caught up with Kenna at the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards (where his involvement in Summit on the Summit earned him a Good Woodie nomination), and he said that while his training was going well, he wasn’t so sure about one climber in particular.

But though Fiasco is new to the climbing game, he is maintaining his cool through the first day. “[Lupe] says he’s a veteran,” Kenna joked. “He went to sleep a lot later than me and trekked as much as I did and drank a lot of water and took some medication [for altitude sickness].”

MTV News will keep in touch with the team as they head up the mountain, and you can track their progress via blogs and tweets at the official Summit on the Summit Web site. The entire trek will be presented as an MTV documentary that will air on March 14.
