British electro-pop sensation La Roux performed to a packed and enthusiastic crowd last night in New York City. The immaculately-coiffed lead singer, Elly Jackson, was on point, showcasing her distinctively breathy and acrobatic voice. But most importantly, it was clear that the singer — as well as the rest of her able-bodied band — were having a blast playing to the crowd.
Unlike some electronic-heavy bands or artists that fizzle in a live setting, La Roux stands out with their energetic show. To compliment the audio offerings of the evening was a fairly impressive paneled light system, which significantly added to the energetic atmosphere. While most of the band remains stationary (understandable, due to their instruments), Jackson bounces around the stage, dancing in a style that I can only lovingly describe as a mix between Elvis Presley and David Bowie.
Taking only a few quick breaks to address the audience, Elly ran through the band's hits. Some notable stand-outs from the night included "In for the Kill," "I'm Not Your Toy," a surprisingly intimate rendition of "Cover My Eyes" and an amazing cover of the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb."
Of course, the night was capped off with an encore, during which La Roux did a raucous version of their hit "Bulletproof," where Elly encouraged the excited audience to participate by thrusting the mic into the crowd allowing them to sing along (which they did gladly). It created a stirring, positive atmosphere that perfectly matched the band's songs: Exciting, blissful and completely great.
