This past weekend, it was sadly reported that Guru, one half of iconic rap group Gang Starr, had fallen ill and was admitted to a New York hospital where he suffered a cardiac arrest. Within hours, urban Web sites, blogs and Twitter were all on full blast with deep concern regarding Guru's health.
Allegedly, longtime producer DJ Premier was set to appear on a satellite radio show later that Sunday night to speak on the matter but was a no-show. Then there was the faux DJ Premier Twitter account that gave a few updates on Guru's condition ("#guru is getting ready for surgery, pray for the best!") that apparently sparked a statement from Guru himself following his surgery: "I am doing fine and I am recovering! I'm weak though. Solar is the only person who has the accurate info on my situation. Any info from anybody else is false! I appreciate your well wishes and all the love!" Was that a shot at Premier? That's currently a hotly debated question across the hip-hop message boards.
Oddly enough, the statement's validity is up for debate, as some say Guru remains in a coma and the words are those of mastermind DJ Solar, Guru's partner. But it gets worse. On Wednesday (March 3), Guru's nephew Justin Nicholas-Elam Ruff unleashed a firestorm of allegations aimed at DJ Solar. "My family has no way of knowing what is going on with Guru's situation," he said. "Solar has complete control over the flow of information given from the hospital, and will not disclose any information with us. The doctors and staff won't discuss any information with Guru's family.”
In addition to allegations of Solar failing to disclose critical information to the Elam family and the growing turmoil between Guru and longtime producer DJ Premier's camp, Solar himself notified the media that he would soon be conducting interviews to speak on the matter.
With all that said, we decided to bring it back when things were all good. Check out this clip of the once-dominant Gang Starr during their peak in 1998, when it was all about Guru's enlightening lyrics and Preemo's undeniable beats. Enjoy this video, as it ended up being one of the last time we'd see the pair together. But no matter what happens, the Gang Starr legacy will forever live on.
