Some weeks the contestants on "American Idol" make it too easy. Such is the case this week. Riding a winning streak and a team-leading 70 percent success rate, I was tempted to make a wildcard call for this week's elimination, but all signs appear to point to the end of the road for fragile flower Didi Benami.
MTV "Idol" idolizer Jim Cantiello put his bid in for Benami, saying her limp "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" was just plain uncomfortable and hard to watch. The judges agreed and said she messed up by getting outside of her singer/songwriter zone and just confusing the audience. It didn't help that host Ryan Seacrest was hell-bent on seeing her cry by trying to force her to admit that she chose the tune in honor of the late friend who inspired her to try out for the show. Double uncomfortable!
MJ Santilli of "Idol" blog MJ's Big Blog also thought Benami might be on the chopping block, but said "Teflon" Tim Urban was the one she thought was going home after his snicker-filled reaction to the latest volley of flaming arrows flung at him by the four horsemen of the "Idol"-pocalypse. Using a bit of crowd logic, she speculated that since two women have been booted in a row, it was the boys' turn.
I'm going to buck that logic and go with Jim, because as Simon Cowell said, Tim seems bulletproof as long as he keeps smiling and grandmas and 12-year-old girls wear out their cellphones voting for him.
My prediction for the bottom three is Siobhan Magnus, Tim Urban and Didi, with Benami getting the boot once the dust settles.
After four weeks of "Idol" forecasting (for those of you keeping score), here are the current standings.
Gil Kaufman: 7-of-10
Jim Cantiello: 5-of-10
MJ Santilli: 4-of-10
