In one of the more thrilling moments in recent sports history, Landon Donovan scored a rebound goal during extra time that made the difference in the Unite States soccer team's 1-0 victory against Algeria in the final match of group play in Group C at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The U.S. team had a number of great opportunities to score (they even had a goal called back because of a questionable offsides call), but by the time the game moved into its final minutes, it looked like the game was on its way to ending in a draw (and thus shutting down the team's ability to advance). But then the U.S. front line stormed the Algerian box and got on top of a rebound that Donovan put in the back of the net.

Not only did the United States win the game and earn the right to advance, but they also finished in first place in Group C. England defeated Slovenia 1-0 in the other final group match, which earned the Brits the other birth to the next round. The United States will now have to wait to see the results of the matches in Group D this afternoon, as whoever finishes in second place in the group will be the U.S. team's next opponent. (All the teams are still alive in Group D, which means that Germany, Ghana, Serbia and Australia are all potential match-ups.)

In the meantime, Donovan can celebrate being a hero to soccer fans across the country and enjoying the fact that he came through in the clutch when all the chips were down. On his blog, Donovan often cites Kings of Leon as one of his favorite bands. To celebrate his heroism, we hope he enjoys "Molly's Chambers."

Apparently, it's a little bit dangerous being Katy Perry. Over the weekend, she was apparently dancing so hard in a club that she fell down and cut her leg. The cut was so intense that it even required 17 stitches. But she is a professional and a soldier, so she slipped a flesh-colored bandage over it and continued on with the promotional tour for her upcoming second album Teenage Dream. "17 stitches later," she tweeted after seeing a doctor. "Don't make fun of my dance moves tomorrow. That's what got me here in the 1st place! Thanks for the souvenir Canada."

While Perry's injury is just a cut, it's still an inconvenience that she is working through. It's difficult to go on tour and not hurt yourself every once in a while, which means that Perry has excellent company on the list of stars who have been knocked down only to get right back up again.

Justin Bieber
While opening up a handful of shows for Taylor Swift in the U.K., Bieber took a misstep and managed to break his foot. Despite having to wear a cast, he still played through the pain and finished the tour (mostly seated).

Crystal Bowersox
In one of the greatest comebacks of all time, the "American Idol" runner-up was hospitalized due to complications related to her diabetes on a Tuesday morning but managed to get on stage the next day for a performance of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "As Long as I Can See the Light," one of her signature moments on the show.

It's MTV's World Cup of Rock! The World Cup is the greatest sporting event on the planet, a super-sized stage where legends are born with every strike of the ball, where infamy is just a moment away and where the dreams of millions live or die by the minute. That's why, in the spirit of the 2010 MTV Musical March Madness competition, we've created "The World Cup (Of Rock)," a FIFA-style tournament that takes 16 of the biggest nations — rock-wise (sorry Algeria) — and pits them against one another to determine just which is the most rockingly awesome. Heavyweights like the U.S.A., England, France and Germany are all here, but so are a handful of surprisingly strong sleeper countries. As the Cup progresses, we'll be unveiling the match-ups, and it's up to you to vote your favorites through. In the end, only one nation will be left standing: the world champion of rock.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is at a fever pitch, with more eliminations coming today in key matches featuring a handful of contenders. Meanwhile, the World Cup of Rock is winding down the first round of matches on the way to the elimination round. Today's match-up features two top contenders going head-to-head.

Germany vs. Japan
Each of these squads has been laying beatdowns to their respective opponents, and both seem likely to advance. But can the blitzkrieg delivered care of fans of Tokio Hotel be enough to overcome the surprising surge by the fans voting for Japan (mostly on the strength of the Japanese metal contingent, lead by legends Dir En Grey). Which nation will reign supreme in Group C? Only you can decide!

The 2010 FIFA World Cup has provided a tremendously exciting few weeks of soccer action and already features a handful of narratives that will not soon be forgotten. There is the failure and internal conflict that plagued the French squad, the noble and poetic but ultimately just-short pursuit by the South African team and the controversy over the disallowed goal in the United States' match against Slovenia last week. That game ended in a draw, which puts the U.S. team in a precarious position today. With two draws to their credit and two points in Group C, they can advance to the next round of the tournament with a victory over Algeria today (it would give them five points, which would clinch at least second place in the group). If they lose, they are definitely out, as Algeria would leap over the U.S. and leave them in last place.

Should this morning's match go to a draw, things get a little more complicated. The U.S. would have to hope that either Slovenia beats England or the match goes to a low-scoring draw (the tiebreaker would come down to total goals scored in the tournament so far).

But to keep things simple, the United States simply needs to score a victory against Algeria and move on to better things. In order to help the home team, we've put together a batch of songs that should get the blood pumping and the American pride swelling. Kid Rock's "American Bad Ass" should put them in the right frame of mind, as should James Brown's immortal "Living In America." If they want to focus on "Fancy Footwork," they can press play on the Chromeo video of the same name. They don't have to worry about being "The Underdog" (they're a slight betting favorite), and they just have to hope the game doesn't devolve into a "House of Cards" (as too many games have changed because of red and yellow cards during this tournament).

If the United States soccer team really wants to get into the winning frame of mind, they need look no further than the first song on the playlist: Europe's "The Final Countdown." What more could they need to get psyched to play the beautiful game?

We take it for granted that comic book heroes are all over our summer blockbusters. Ever since "X-Men" and "Spider-Man" resurrected the idea that comic book properties could be made into quality blockbusters that transcend their core fandom, every property with even a vague semblance of buzz can get spun into cinematic gold. They don't always work (witness the just-released "Jonah Hex"), but the ones that do manage to satisfy both the thrill-seeking cinema-goer and inspire a little thought and introspection at the same time. But a little over a decade before that resurgence could happen, Tim Burton's "Batman" took over the cinemas for the rest of the summer starting on this day in 1989.

The film, which starred Jack Nicholson as the Joker and Michael Keaton as the man living a split life between billionaire Bruce Wayne and the titular Caped Crusader, was a box office phenomenon. It earned $40 million during its opening weekend and went on to gross over $250 million. The movie also catapulted Burton to blockbuster status, as while his previous efforts "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" and "Beetlejuice" were successful, they did not match the commercial power and crossover appeal of "Batman" (which, while wildly popular, was also extremely dark). It stayed on the top of the box office chart for two weeks, fighting off big summer hits like "Lethal Weapon 2," "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and "Ghostbusters 2."

More importantly, the flick turned the Batman character into a cultural phenomenon again. There were toys, T-shirts and a revitalized interest in the comic books. People were getting Batman tattoos and making barbers shave the movie's logo into their heads. Though the subsequent sequels (especially 1995's "Batman Forever" and 1997's "Batman and Robin") spent all of the public's good will, America was totally gaga for Batman in the summer of '89 (such a trend happened again in 2008, when "The Dark Knight" debuted). You could argue that we were a "Bat Country" for a brief period — and here's Avenged Sevenfold to make that case.

The first eliminations are in the books in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, as France, South Africa, Greece and Nigeria have ended their runs. That means that South Korea, Argentina, Uruguay and Mexico are all headed to the knockout round, with plenty more soccer action to go. But everybody is still alive in the World Cup of Rock, including both of the teams from Group B in today's final match-up.

South Korea vs. South Africa
South Korea has been tearing up their opponents thanks to the power of Rain and his incredible online fan base. Though South Africa has a diverse attack, they are currently falling short to England in another match and could really use the boost. But can the Dave Matthews-lead squad overcome the awesome power of the South Koreans? Only you can decide!

It's a strangely busy week for new album releases, and no matter what sort of sounds you're into, there are plenty of options. If you're a fan of classic metal, there are new albums by Ozzy Osbourne, Danzig and Vince Neil. Into funky, groovy hip-hop? The Roots' How I Got Over streets today. Still dig those big, block-rocking beats? Check out the just-released Chemical Brothers album Further. Macy Gray, Marah, Cyndi Lauper, Herbie Hancock, Stars, Robert Randolph and Sia all have new music that is in stores today. It's an embarrassment of riches.

But really, there are two new albums that will battle it out for chart supremacy this week, a pair of highest-profile LPs that are already creating buzz from coast to coast. In one corner, there is Eminem's new album Recovery, which ditches a lot of the rapper's gimmicks in favor of raw, straightforward songs that recall his earlier, harder work. On the other side of the coin, today marks the release of Miley Cyrus' latest album Can't Be Tamed, a departure from her typical sound that ventures deeper into the world of electronic music, dance rhythms and even a bit of hip-hop.

What we have are two dominant pop stars with two huge albums. Which one will come out on top? Here's the tale of the tape.

Experience
Eminem: Slim Shady has been rhyming since the age of 14 and has been a mainstream star since 1999's The Slim Shady LP. However, he has jumped in and out of the mainstream since then, at one point essentially disappearing for nearly four years.
Cyrus: The young star got her first acting job in 2001 and began recording music on "Hannah Montana" in 2006 and has been consistently in the spotlight since then.
Advantage: Eminem. He only has a few extra years at the top of the game, but he has already had at least one comeback. That experience could mean everything.

Nicknames
Eminem: The man born Marshall Mathers is known as his main recording name as well as the alter-ego Slim Shady.
Cyrus: "Miley" is actually a nickname. The girl was born Destiny Hope Cyrus, but her parents called her "Smiley" because she smiled so much. That nickname eventually evolved into "Miley."
Advantage: Cyrus. One nickname is better than two somewhat silly ones.

"It was just interesting at the time, for me, to see how the Internet works. Because I tweeted [a video purportedly showing the execution of Tamil separatists in Sri Lanka] a couple months before, and nobody really gave a sh--. And when there's tomato ketchup and fake blood, people are like, 'Oh my God, this is shocking!' And it's like, 'It's ketchup!' [So] I think it's interesting how we react to fiction and how we react to realism on the Internet."

-International dance and electronic music sensation M.I.A., discussing the controversy that rose up over the violence in the video for "Born Free." The clip, which premiered a few months back, features a narrative about a holocaust that takes out redheaded people. The song comes from her new album /\/\/\Y/\, which is set to hit store shelves on July 13. Though many of her critics dismissed the "Born Free" clip as a piece of sensationalism, M.I.A. insists that you need to see past the sensationalism and look at the real issues.

"Thinking about 'Born Free,' what, a month on, is interesting because, last week, I guess in [Texas,] they shot the Mexican kid," she said, referring to the 15-year-old shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent earlier this month. "Or, think about the boat that went into [Gaza] with all the activists. ... Since the video came out, there's been events. This is not some weird, crazy conspiracy theory, this is mainstream media. I wish I was talking about way more underground theories, but [I'm] not, this is just me digesting what I see in the mainstream."

Every day a multitude of stars wander through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with our intrepid correspondents. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that's why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.

Miley Cyrus' new album Can't Be Tamed hit stores today, and on Monday night (June 21), she kicked off the week celebrating the record's release with a killer concert streamed live on MTV.com. Cyrus stormed the stage at the House of Blues in Los Angeles for a set that featured some of the hottest new tracks from Can't Be Tamed, including the spicy title track, her cover of the Poison classic "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" and the swaggering album kick-off song "Liberty Walk." Can't Be Tamed is an interesting progression for Cyrus, as it moves away from the more mainstream pop and country-kissed rock to a more electronic world normally inhabited by the likes of Ke$ha or Fergie. Still, it's all Cyrus, and her unique voice and signature delivery carry the tunes.

Cyrus wasn't the only star shining out in public, as Green Day performed a high-profile concert in Glasgow and Jay-Z visited the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York to tape some segments for "The Late Show With David Letterman" (which will air this Friday, June 25). Click here for these photos as well as the entire "Spotted!" archive, which features over 350 candid shots of stars like Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, 50 Cent, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera, Madonna and Eminem!

I have always been a little obsessed with Mötley Crüe. I can remember watching MTV for hours in the hopes of catching the video premiere of "Dr. Feelgood" and then constantly horrifying my parents with how often I listened to that album, all when I was only 10 years old. Later on, I was all about Nikki Sixx, but only because I felt a bizarre kinship with him after reading "The Dirt." (I don't want to think about what that says about me, especially considering he is legally dead for a few minutes in that book.) There's just something about those guys Ὰ as much as they've done and as much as they've gone through, they are just still so awesome.

A few weeks ago, Newsroom Blog editor Kyle Anderson sent an e-mail to notify the appropriate MTV News staff that he had booked Crü frontman Vince Neil to stop by for an interview surrounding the release of his new solo album Tattoos and Tequila and an autobiography of the same name. I immediately went a little ballistic in my reply to him, essentially stating that no matter what happened, I had to meet Vince Neil.

Finally, the day arrived. I reminded (read: threatened) Kyle about how the meeting needed to happen. And after waiting in my office for half an hour while Vince was interviewed, Kyle came to get me and I walked (camera in hand, obviously) over to the conference room.

People, Vince couldn't have been nicer. That's even more amazing when you consider the fact that Kyle had clearly warned Vince and his team that I was a little Crüe-crazy. As a bonus, his shirt was ever so slightly unbuttoned (showing off the awesome tats on his chest). I got my picture taken with him and he was kind enough to sign a CD for me. As we said our goodbyes and thank-yous, he even gave me a kiss on the cheek. I die.

What rock frontman would you most like to meet? Let us know in the comments!
