It’s a great time to be a sports fan at the moment. The knockout round of the World Cup is in full swing, several different baseball races offer new thrills every day and NBA free agency is re-aligning the league. But the biggest event of the weekend is most certainly UFC 116, which will play host to the biggest heavyweight fight in decades. The former NCAA wrestling All-American, WWE star and reigning heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will square off against All-American football player and wrestler Shane “The Engineer” Carwin (so nicknamed because he actually owns a degree in mechanical engineering from the Colorado School of Mines).
Both men have dominated the mixed martial arts scene since their respective debuts. Lesnar stumbled in his first UFC fight but since then has been a total killer, knocking out legends and former champs like Randy Couture and Frank Mir. Carwin has been on a similar tear, as he has not only yet to lose a fight but he also has yet to allow any of his matches to advance past the first round. They have strikingly similar games, as they are both strong wrestlers with knockout power and somewhat-untested submission skills. Though the fight is scheduled for five rounds, it seems highly unlikely that it will get into the third.
Lesnar is a slight betting favorite, but considering how evenly matched the two are, it’s basically a pick’em fight. Still, there is one particular piece of criteria that can tilt the windmills in either man’s favor: Their entrance music. Lesnar debuted with UFC using Mötley Crüe‘s “Shout at the Devil” (a totally excellent choice), but since then he has used Metallica‘s “Enter Sandman.” It’s a solid choice, as it has scored many a dominant performance (most notably from New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera). It’s everything a walk-in song should be: Loud, ominous and totally badass.
But Carwin counters with Drowning Pool‘s “Bodies,” a tune he has used for his last few fights. Though “Enter Sandman” is a bit more majestic, “Bodies” is the very definition of hardcore. Nothing says, “I am about to knock you into next week” than the guttural growls of late Drowning Pool frontman Dave Williams. (Plus, it was included in the trailer for “Jason X,” which immediately kicks it up a few notches.)
So based on that very scientific study, the official MTV Newsroom Blog pick for UFC 116 is Shane Carwin via yet another first round knockout. If you aren’t convinced, let the video for “Bodies” talk you into it.
