Weezer Debut New Single, Album Cover For Hurley

A few weeks ago, Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo mentioned that he was considering calling his band’s upcoming album Heavy Mental. That lead to a handful of helpful suggestions for names to call the new project (we still think somebody should use the title Kitty Hate Machine). But it turns out the group is calling the new album Hurley, which is not named after the famous surf and skate apparel company but rather after Hugo “Hurley” Reyes, the character played by actor Jorge Garcia on “Lost.” Cuomo told Spinner, “I just loved this photo of Jorge Garcia — it just had this amazing vibe. We didn’t want to do a fourth self-titled record and we knew people would refer to it as ‘the Hurley record’ even if left it without that title, so we just called it Hurley. No words are on the cover because all we wanted was his amazing face.”

Cuomo is right about one thing: This photo does have a certain vibe.

Immediately, we here in the MTV Newsroom had a collective thought: What if the new Weezer album was actually a concept album about “Lost”? It certainly would make sense for Weezer, who have always erred on the side of nerdiness, and the complicated mythology and pinpoint details of “Lost” would probably appeal to Cuomo’s brain. It certainly wouldn’t be the worst idea in the universe.

Sadly, it seems that’s not the case. In addition to the new album cover, they also debuted a new single called “Memories” which looks back at the early days of the band when they were “playing Hacky Sack when Audioslave was still Rage.” There isn’t a mention of Hurley, nor of Jack, Locke, the hatch or the Dharma Initiative. Still, making a “Lost” reference is appropriate, because the arc of “Lost” is not unlike the arc of Weezer’s career: It started off with a big bang, elevated itself to can’t-miss status, started losing people along the way and then went off the rails while fiercely dividing fans and critics. Really, the arguments people have about the “Lost” finale are not unlike the ones people have over Raditude. Here’s hoping that Hurley is more season three than season five.
