“Whatever comes out of my mouth is just what you guys are going to hear. I don’t know, it’s not a specific type of music. Whatever music I write, I wouldn’t say I’m pop or R&B or country or anything: I would just say it’s just good music.”
-Teen pop sensation Justin Bieber, noting how he does not consider himself fenced in by one genre label or another. The 16-year-old Canadian superstar sat down with MTV News just before Christmas when he wrapped up the end of his epic tour in his adopted hometown of Atlanta.
It’s telling that Bieber mentioned those three particular types of music, as he has been delving deep into pop (most of the tracks on the first My World), R&B (his collaborations with Usher and Sean Kingston) and country (he has recently collaborated with Rascal Flatts). You can also add hip-hop to that list, as he supposedly has been working on his own rap mixtape (under his alter-ego, Shawty Mane) and has collaborated in the past with Kanye West and Asher Roth. He was also spotted in the studio with Diddy, so it will be interesting to see exactly what the singer sounds like moving forward.
Following the holidays, Bieber took a well-deserved vacation in St. Lucia (where he spent a lot of time with close pal Selena Gomez). But he’ll be right back to work pretty soon, as he has a film coming out (the upcoming 3-D documentary and concert film “Never Say Never”), a few more tour dates and a hotly-anticipated new album arriving down the line.
