Kanye West & Jay-Z's 'H.A.M.' Versus Britney Spears' 'Hold It Against Me': Which Do You Prefer?

Posted 1/11/11 10:30 am EST by Kyle Anderson in Music

The year is barely 11 days old, but while the movie universe suffers through the dumping ground season, the music universe has been given a pair of massive singles from some of the biggest artists on the planet. On Monday (January 10), Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" found its way online, and just after midnight on Tuesday (January 11), Kanye West and Jay-Z unleashed "H.A.M.," the first single from their upcoming collaboration album Watch the Throne. Both songs are lighting up the Internet, as they are both as big and bombastic as the personalities who produced them.

Spears' "Hold It Against Me" is the first single the singer has put out since her chart-topping "3" in 2009, and it comes from her first album since her smash Circus from 2008. The track was co-produced by two of the biggest names in the game in Dr. Luke (who is responsible for hits like Katy Perry's "California Gurls," Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" and Taio Cruz's "Dynamite") and Max Martin (who cranked out Spears' first hit "...Baby One More Time" as well as her most recent hit "3" and smashes by Backstreet Boys, Celine Dion and Pink). The track is an envelope-pushing release from Spears, as it contains possibly her most intense, dance-heavy vibe yet.

Meanwhile, "H.A.M." is as crazy as the nuttiest tracks from West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The beat is all over the place, shifting from a jittery dance track to a dark groove to an otherwordly blast of opera choirs and baroque strings. Plus, it has killer verse from both Jigga and Yeezy, and its title has a mysterious meaning (does the acronym stand for "Hail All Masons" or "Hard as a Motherf---er"?).

But we'll leave the judgment to you. Which of these two huge singles do you prefer? Vote in the poll below and leave your arguments in the comments!
