Britney Spears will be "Burning Up" on her Femme Fatale tour, according to Perez Hilton. The singer is slated to perform a cover of the classic Madonna tune when she hits the road starting next week. On a version of her cover that has hit the Net, instead of updating the classic, Brit goes retro, with swirling synths and a new-wave-meets-disco party beat.
It's hardly her first stab at putting her stamp on a pop staple. In fact, over the course of her decade-and-a-half career, Brit has frequently covered classics, spinning them to fit her sex-kitten vocal stylings.
On her debut album, she traveled back to the '60s, when she covered Sonny and Cher's "The Beat Goes On," an ode to a previous generation's efforts to change culture. As it would turn out, she herself would usher in a new generation of pop, fueled by sexy looks, hot beats and killer dance moves.
Spears very famously covered the Rolling Stones' classic "Satisfaction" at the 2000 VMAs, when she threw in a pop beat and a strip tease in a nude body suit.
Two years later, she sassed up the already sassy Joan Jett classic, "I Love Rock 'n Roll," which she recorded for her 2002 album Britney. You can almost hear her dance around in skintight leather pants as she sings the track.
She was hardly virginal when she took the stage with Madonna (and Christina Aguilera, lest you forget!) at the 2003 VMAs. Wearing a barely-there wedding dress, she swapped spit with Madge while having some fun with the trio's take on Madonna's iconic "Like a Virgin."
Having become a tabloid fixture by 2004, Britney addressed her bad-girl image using Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" in her In the Zone album. For the video, Brit rolled around in lingerie and made out with backup dancer Kevin Federline, to whom she'd just gotten engaged at the time. Hey, it's her prerogative, y'all.
