Rihanna

Rihanna is already the most famous Barbadian export since rum, sugar and Doug E. Fresh, so it sort of makes sense that she's just signed a multi-year deal with the Barbados Tourism Authority to serve as an ambassador for the island nation.

"Barbados is a place like no other and one of the reasons for this is the spirit and national pride of our people," she said in a statement. "I want each and every visitor to this beautiful island to experience what makes this destination different from all others and that is the spirit and warmth of my fellow Barbadians."

As part of the deal, RiRi will promote her homeland as a tourist destination "through advertising campaigns, promotional appearances and via her social media presence," (which, we assume, includes stuff like this), and the partnership officially kicks off on August 5, when she'll perform a triumphant concert in the capital city of Bridgetown.

And while it's not clear if her new role as ambassador will include any sort of official duties (we'd like to imagine epaulets are somehow involved,) we've got to admit that it's a bit of a marketing masterstroke, the kind of cross-promotional opportunity that Rihanna's pop-star pals should consider adding to their ever-expanding portfolios ASAP. In fact, we've got a few ideas kicking around right now.

» Britney Spears: Official ambassador of Louisiana fried foods, cut-off shorts.

» Lady Gaga: Spokesperson, New York City Department of Wearing Crazy-ass S--- All The Time.

» Katy Perry: Vague promotional tie-in to California. Like, she should write a song about the gurls there or something.

» Beyonce: 2B, Houston Astros.

» Pink: Spokesperson, Visit PA Board of Whiskey-Swilling and Acrobatics.

» Ke$ha: Fully bonded-and-licensed officer, Tennessee Bail Enforcement Division.

» Christina Aguilera: Official representative of wherever she's been hiding for the past few years.

Lady Gaga premiered the much-anticipated video for her latest hit single, “The Edge of Glory,” last night on So You Think You Can Dance. In the clip, Gaga dances on fire escapes and down a foggy city street while Clarence Clemons wails on his saxophone, but the minimalist-for-Gaga video – and the Twitter storm that followed its premiere – has left fans wondering if some behind-the-scene drama resulted in a different clip than Gaga and her creative team originally intended.

Following the premiere, Joseph Kahn, who was widely reported to be the video’s director, took to Twitter to deny he helmed the video, saying, “I did NOT direct Lady Gaga’s ‘Edge of Glory’ video. Lady Gaga did.” He even clarified that he did not co-direct the clip with her, adding, “No, I don’t co-direct. One canvas, one paintbrush.” Note: Gaga and Kahn did not respond to MTV News for comment.

So what happened? Read on for a closer look into what could have been. Read More...

Selena Gomez

By Danielle Genet

Seemingly healthy and always energetic, when news broke last week that Selena Gomez had been hospitalized after her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the world was shocked. Fans took to Twitter and Facebook to wish Gomez a speedy recovery, and thankfully she recovered a few days later.

This morning on a Texas radio show, the singer-actress cited poor eating habits and too much junk food consumption as the root of her illness. Gomez has been a junk food addict for many years but as she matures into a young woman, it’s probably best she start focusing more on her diet. With a list of exciting career adventures ahead, MTV News talked with nutrition strategist Lisa C. Cohn, M.M.Sc., R.D., from Park Avenue Nutrition (who does not treat Gomez) to develop a new healthy food plan Gomez can follow when she’s busy and on-the go.

Cohn recommends Gomez “go with freshly grown foods that are not processed or contain additives such as high fructose corn syrup or processed fats such as trans fat.” This type of junk food can cause a person to feel lethargic and bloated. Since Gomez is always traveling she needs foods that are light on her stomach but also contain good energy, things like salads with fresh greens, beans, lentils, chick peas, fresh cilantro and fresh berries. Light dressings, such as a lemon or lime juice, are also important in order to keep the belly flat and to aid in digestion. Naturally antioxidant rich foods, including seasonal fruits like diced papaya or a fresh fruit smoothie, are also recommended.

Tupac

By D.L. Chandler

As we acknowledge the 40th Birthday of Tupac “2Pac” Shakur, our friends at RapFix have compiled a list of 40 facts about the legendary rapper, poet and actor who still continues to captivate and inspire even to this day. Born on this day (June 16) in 1971, 2Pac’s status as one of the greats in the pantheon of hip-hop has long been cemented as we offer this salute to the lasting legacy of the fiery and complex rapper.

1) Tupac was named after Tupac Amaru II who was an Emperor of the Inca Empire in Peru and led an uprising against Spanish soldiers in his country in 1780.

2) The track "Something Wicked" from 2Pac’s debut 2pacalypse Now album was a direct quote from Shakespeare's Macbeth (i.e. "Something Wicked This Way Comes").

3) Tupac was engaged to Quincy Jones’ daughter Kidada at the time of his passing.

4) Tupac had to take an HIV test before kissing Janet Jackson in "Poetic Justice," where he played opposite of the singer in the role of post office worker Lucky.

5) Tupac’s last video before his death was “I Ain’t Mad At Cha” and featured actor Bokeem Woodbine. The video also shouted out Mutulu Shakur and Geronimo Pratt, his stepfather and godfather respectively.

So, would the guys of NKOTBSB switch places with one another? The short answer is yes. For the long answers, we went to one half of the band to see what they had to say.

We were totally into most of the guys' answers because they were pretty heartwarming and totally charming. For instance, Brian shared this with us, "I'd want to be Joe during 'Please Don’t Go Girl.' He's got this monumental moment." (For the record, he does. He actually kind of brings the house down.)

Danny's answer was just kind of adorable. Why? Well, this is what he shared, "I would switch places with 'Backstreet's Back' to do the choreography … I always wanted [to]. Well when we talked about this, in my head we'd all be doing that together. But it didn’t happen for me. I love that song and I love the choreography."

Read on for Howie’s surprising answer. Read More...

Metallica

By Zachary Swickey

Two legendary forces of music – mega-selling metal band Metallica and The Velvet Underground’s enigmatic frontman Lou Reed – have quietly congregated at Metallica’s San Francisco studio to record a collaborative album. Rumors have been swirling for a while, and Metallica finally put them to rest with a statement confirming the effort on their website.

“A few months ago our own Kirk Hammet hinted at a new Metallica project that’s ‘not really 100 percent a Metallica record.’ While Kirk jumped the gun a little, we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed.”

Currently untitled, the record will consist of 10 songs created by Reed with Metallica fulfilling arrangement duties. “I knew it from the first day we played together: ‘Oh, man, this is perfection, right in front of me.’” Reed told Rolling Stone. “They’re bringing Metallica, with all that power, and because they’re pretty sophisticated, wherever I go, they’re still with me.

Metallica giddily share Reed’s enthusiasm for the project: “I don’t think we’ve ever felt this free. There’s nothing that’s totally outside of the boundary for us.” Read More...

Hef and Crystal Harris

By Zachary Swickey

Crystal Harris, who until Tuesday was set to be the next Mrs. Hugh Hefner, has revealed her aspirations of becoming a professional singer. If the blonde bombshell can get the world’s biggest playboy (pun totally intended) to “put a ring on it,” then what can’t she do, I suppose?

The 24-year-old’s debut tune, “Club Queen,” hit the iTunes store on June 14 and a full album is expected to drop later this year. Speaking with RadarOnline, Harris cited her father as inspiration, “My dad was a singer in the UK, and I got my pipes from him.”

After performing her new track at last week’s opening of the newest Playboy Club in London, Harris is looking toward future gigs, saying, “I can’t wait to do more shows and have more songs soon.”

Harris is the latest to join the lengthy (D-)list of celebs taking a shot at pop stardom. Recording your own song is as “in” as chicks putting rooster feathers in their hair. Seems like the appropriate time to take a look back at some of the craziest of ‘em. Read More...

Glee

Last night we fell in love with Glee star Naya Rivera at the spring fling.

Banners, balloons and silver streamers transformed New York’s trendy Gansevoort Park Lounge into a school dance for the Samsung AT&T Spring Fling, and MTV was there to greet Glee’s Rivera, Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale, who are in town for the final American shows of the Glee Live! In Concert Tour, at the Nassau Coliseum and Izod Center, respectively.

The tour, which moves to the U.K. next week for a series of dates in London, Manchester and Dublin, is the second road show for the cast, who visited theaters in the U.S. last summer. This year’s tour is a much larger affair.

“We’re playing arenas now instead of theaters,” Rivera told us. “I guess the easiest way to put it is, when you leave the dressing room and walk up and see the thousands of people and thousands of cameras, that’s the one thing that’s different. Just the amount of people. It’s overwhelming and so much fun.”

Asked if the change was intimidating, Rivera laughed, “No, it actually kind of revs me up, it gives me more adrenaline.”

Read on to find out which artists Rivera would like to cover next season and whether she knows where next season will take her character, Santana. Read More...

Shania Twain

By Zachary Swickey

It’s been nearly a decade since country’s biggest female songstress, Shania Twain, brought us her last hot-selling album, 2002’s Up! Regardless, the 45-year-old Canadian crooner is now celebrating a series of major achievements: Her worldwide album sales just surpassed 75 million, and she is currently mounting one heck of a comeback with a Las Vegas concert residency, a book, television show on OWN and, oh yeah, new music.

She just dropped her first new single in six years, “Today is Your Day” (quite the appropriate title, and already No. 2 on the iTunes country chart) following the finale of her reality show, Why Not with Shania Twain. This summer the singer finally plans to reconvene in the studio and hopes to release a full new album later this fall – if all goes according to plan. She certainly needs to get the record out before the third quarter of next year, when she begins her lavish residency in Sin City.

Beginning Dec. 1, 2012, the superstar will be gracing the stage at the Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. The special two year engagement, entitled Shania Twain: You’re the One, will have the singer performing 60 shows annually, and if country singer Garth Brook’s recent success in the desert is any indication, the tickets will be rather hard to come by.

Kara DioGuardi

By Morgan Schwartz

Kara DioGuardi strolled into MTV News yesterday in a pair of black plastic flip flops. A weird choice of shoes? At first, I thought so. But after listening to her candidly (and hilariously) talk about her experiences and seeing how laid back and open she was, the shoes seemed a perfect fit.

I first got to know Kara when she judged American Idol in its eighth and ninth seasons. As a hardcore Idol fan, I must say, having a seemingly random woman walk on and upset the balance of Randy, Simon and Paula really pissed me off. But Kara won me over pretty quickly and I became an admirer.

Always looking hot, Kara proved to be a provider of some pretty good feedback (or at least better than her female counterpart Paula, who always seemed to be, um, a little out of it). But I still had no idea where her expertise came from. And though I learned she was a songwriter, I had no idea how much she actually did. Until today.
