The nominations for the 2011 MTV video Music Awards just dropped. Katy Perry’s “Firework” leads with Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” and Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” hot on its heels. Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Chris Brown and Foster the People also scored multiple nominations.
But that’s not what you want to hear about! You want us to break down the surprises. Well, let’s start with what you’re all thinking: Where are Britney and Gaga? Earlier today, you let us know loud and clear that not only did you expect multiple nominations for Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, you anticipated that the princesses of pop would lead all nominees.
Well, they didn’t. Both superstars scored only one major nomination, Britney for Best Pop Video for “Till The World Ends” and Gaga for Best Female Video for “Born This Way.” Both also brought home nominations in technical categories like Best Choreography.

Personally, we are most surprised by the lack of love for Kanye West’s ballet epic “Runaway.” West is known for his epic videos and scored multiple nominations for “All Of The Lights,” but we expected to see the stark clip for the second single from his acclaimed “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” somewhere among the VMA nominees.
We’re not at all surprised Adele’s fantastic video for “Rolling in the Deep” got some VMA love, though the amount of nominations the clip scored did come as a small shock. The video appears in every major category open to it – Video of the Year, Best Female Video and Best pop Video – and got recognition in a variety of tech categories, from Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography to Best Editing and Best Direction.
Another shocker: The two big nominations for Tyler, The Creator. The 20-year-old rapper scored Video of the Year and Best New Artist nods. It’s not that Tyler doesn’t deserve the buzz, we’re just not as familiar with him as we are with the other big name nominees.
Vote in our poll now through 3PM EST tomorrow (7/21) and let us know what you found most surprising about the VMA nominations!
