Mariah Carey

It’s time for a trip down memory lane. Once upon a time, in a far off kingdom called New York City, lived a popular little show called “Total Request Live” or simply “TRL.” It drew hoards of teens to Times Square, where they could stand in the street, block traffic and scream at some of the biggest stars in music. Do you remember? Man, those were the days…

Well, ten years ago today one of the biggest stars of all dropped by for what would become one of the most talked about appearances in the show’s 10-year history. The star: Mariah Carey. And girlfriend brought ice cream!

The pop star arrived unannounced and proceeded to strip off her shirt and pass out cool treats. According to Carey, “If you don’t have ice cream in your life, sometimes you just might go a little bit crazy.” (You can say that again, sister!) Host Carson Daly’s response: “That’s a metaphor for a lot more, I’m sure.”

The whole thing was pretty strange, to say the least, and left Daly clearly flustered. Check it out after the jump. Read More...

A year ago, MTV News production assistants Rya Backer and Steven Roberts realized that their devotion to chasing stories was seriously getting in the way of their love lives. That's why they dreamed up "First Date," a regular feature that allows them to get up close and personal to some of our favorite hot new artists.

I knew a little bit about Theophilus London before we met up to go shopping. My friend Derek first told me about him a few years ago, and I’d seen him around the city – standing at approximately 9,000 ft (or at least a bit taller, relative to my five-feet-and-change stature), Mr. London isn’t that hard to spot in a crowd. He’s also an insanely well-dressed man, so when I found out I was going to spend some time with him, there was only one activity I really wanted to take on with the NYC-based rapper: shopping.

Metropolis is a fun little store in my neighborhood that I thought would fit the bill perfectly. In addition to a wide range of eyewear (an accessory both myself and Mr. London value), they carry vintage clothes heavy on the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. Kind of like a good rock radio station. Mr. London and I perused their racks while discussing some of our favorite things: reality television, “Clueless” and the age-old debate about girls wearing clogs (that last part didn’t make the cut). He also picked out some clothes for me to try on, and while I didn’t leave with a new romper or jumpsuit that day, I’ve still got my eye on a Mets 1986 championship T-shirt that I saw hanging on the wall.

Read on for more about London’s new album, Timez are Weird These Days. Read More...

Justin Timberlake

By Zachary Swickey

Lady Gaga and Kanye West have been the dominating forces in the music world for the last few years, but one ultimate pop star has notably been absent: Justin Timberlake. But is all that about to change?

For years, Justin has regularly downplayed his return to the studio or stage. but in February, he teased bringing sexy back yet again, stating he might return to the studio this summer. Now, thanks to a charity auction listing, it appears we may have evidence of a potential 2012 tour.

The prize, as listed on Charity Buzz, is as follows:

“Attend one of Justin Timberlake’s 2012 concerts with 2 VIP tickets to the concert of your choice in industry seating followed by a meet and greet with the legendary, artist, actor, and entrepreneur.”

The terms of the auction mention that tour dates have not been announced (clearly), but the item was donated by Timberlake himself to benefit the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, which was founded by Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons, Russell Simmons and Danny Simmons to help disadvantaged urban youth through the arts.

Let’s just get it out there: the boobies. Those are definitely different.

The original cut of Britney Spears’ “Gimme More” music video has leaked online and includes never-before-seen footage that was edited out of the official video. Most of this footage revolves around Britney’s, um, assets.

The biggest structural change to the video comes at its beginning and end. In the official cut, Spears sits at the bar in a blonde wig and watches herself take the strip club stage. Here we get black and white clips from stripper Britney’s life. We see her get out of bed in the morning and walking down a Los Angeles side street, presumably on her way to her gig on the pole.

The blown out neon light effects that gave the original video a particularly seedy feel are less prominent here. In their place we get shots that linger on Britney as she bumps and grinds on a striper pole alongside backup dancers in a leather vest, fishnets and ill-fitting booty shorts.

Another change comes into play at 2:05 when Britney loses the vest. There’s really no delicate way to say this: There’s a lot more skin here. Shots of Britney’s booty bouncing abound and there’s plenty of side boob.

Check out the leaked original video after the jump. Read More...

The Pitchfork Music Festival hit Chicago this past weekend, and this concertgoer is here to tell you why you should join her there next year.

1. You actually get to see the bands you want to. The Pitchfork Music Festival has expanded since its 2005 debut, working its way up from one day to a full three-day affair. For this past weekend's event, the sound systems were improved immensely, and it was more organized. Rarely were there the giant overlaps between bands that force festival-goers to make difficult choices.

Due to the size of Union Park, only the festival was expanded and luckily not the crowds. This year attracted approximately 48,000 people over a three-day period, which might sound big, but compared to larger-scale indie festivals like Coachella, it was very comfortable.

Do you want to check out rising electronic artist James Blake croon at his keyboard from three rows away instead of all the way in the back? Great news: It's totally doable! One of the best aspects of a smaller-scale festival is that it takes less time to get to the different stages, and there's no need to camp out all day in front of one stage to see the artists you love. Sure, you might decide to hang around the stage an artist earlier to get closer to L.A. noise rockers Health, but that means you get to discover and dance to the poppy grooves of Toro y Moi before you start moshing. With the exception of the three headlining acts, it's an actual possibility to get close to the stage for most of the artists you've come to Pitchfork to see. Read More...

As U2 begin to wrap up the last leg of their seemingly never-ending 360° tour, they continue to shatter records and cement their place as the top touring act ever. The tour – which began in Europe two years ago in support of their most recent album, No Line on the Horizon – has currently grossed over $675 million during the over 100-show run with each date selling out consecutively.

Anyone who has caught a glimpse of the 167-foot tall “claw” structure that U2 employs as their stage knows just how massive this production is. It has a ridiculous budget of $750,000 a day, a fleet of 120 trucks, and a 400-person workforce. It takes eight days just to set up and take down the rig, and the group has three (at $40 million per “claw”), so that two can be in the process of assembly on the same night they play another gig. This 360-degree stage scenario allows up to 20 percent more tickets to be sold; therefore, further helping U2 slaughter attendance records from South Africa to the U.S.

To put things into perspective, The Rolling Stones’ 2005-07 A Bigger Bang Tour is the second highest grossing tour ever, raking in over $550 million, but selling a paltry 4.6 million in tickets to U2’s 7 million. Similarly, U2’s average attendance of over 65,000 people more than doubled the Stones’ 32,500. AC/DC’s lengthy return to the road – 2008-10’s Black Ice World Tour; their first jaunt in 7 years – is unsurprisingly the third highest grossing tour of all time.

But what about the ladies? Find out below. Read More...

From MTV RapFix:

After R&B crooner Chris Brown made an appearance in front of a reported 18,000 fans on NBC morning program Today as part of its summer concert series this past Friday (July 15), rival network FOX News was critical of the station and singer based on Brown’s 2009 domestic dispute with his then-girlfriend, pop songstress Rihanna.

Over the weekend, FOX host Laura Ingraham in a clip offered quips on Brown’s turbulent past and saying that Americans were “disgusted” by his actions while criticizing his top billing on morning show's stages. Brown tweeted angrily in response to the report over the weekend.

“People really should grow up sometimes! I guess the next story they make up will say chris brown paid the fans to come! #stopit5 hahaha..,” Brown tweeted on Saturday (July 16). He followed that post with, “Running bogus and pointless stories don't matter! My fans prove that everyday and the haters just look old as F**k !”

Brown fired off a few more tweets before thanking his followers on Twitter for supporting him and giving a shout out to his “Team Breezy” fans. He also got some support from a famous friend. Find out who after the jump. Read More...

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony

Late Friday afternoon, "American Idol" judge and resurgent songstress Jennifer Lopez and her husband, Latin pop superstar Marc Anthony, announced they were ending their 7-year marriage.

“We have decided to end our marriage," Lopez and Anthony said in a joint statement to People magazine. "This was a very difficult decision. We have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters. It is a painful time for all involved, and we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time."

The split shocked many, as Lopez and Anthony have for years seemed the picture of wedded bliss. As surprising as the news itself was, the couple’s decision to announce their separation on a Friday afternoon is telling, according to former celebrity publicist and Huffington Post columnist Naughty But Nice Rob Shuter, who has worked with Lopez.

“That’s such a celebrity publicist trick, to dump bad news on a Friday. And it’s interesting that Nick [Lachey] and Vanessa [Manillo] dumped good news on a Friday too, that they were married. So it’s not even just bad news, it’s news you don’t want a lot of buzz about,” Rob says. “The silly thing about this is these rules were created in the old days of stars like Marilyn Monroe. These sorts of PR tricks were created a very long time ago, and now what’s happened is the media has changed so much. There wasn’t Internet, or digital media or social media back when these sorts of rules or tricks were created. In the last three to five years, social media has become so important that it really doesn’t matter what day, what time or what planet you announce it on, it’s going to be a big deal.”

Lady Gaga

I should have known I was in for a serious dose of self-righteous preaching from the first sentence – “Art is a lie.” Maybe I’m just suffering from Lady Gaga fatigue, but her second column for V Magazine is out and to say it’s eye-roll inducing is an understatement.

Once again we’re treated to broad, grandstanding generalizations. Fashion is an important extension of self. You can express yourself so thoroughly through fashion that it can and should become a part of who you are. Fashion is not fantasy, it is reality if you let it be. Gaga is now inseparable from her aesthetic. In her own words, “The lines for myself have become so blurred now, I know not the difference between a moment of performance and a moment of honesty. If you were to ask me to remove my Philip Treacy hat at a party, in truth it is the emotional and physical equivalent of requesting I remove my liver.”

That loud thud you just heard was the sound of heads slamming into desks all across the country. I don’t know about you, but I know not how to go on with my day without a $1,500 hat with feathers and bows on it either. Read More...
