Beyonce

By Morgan Schwartz

Father knows best. Or at least that’s what celebrities sometimes tell themselves when hiring one or more of their parents to help out with their careers. But does being a good mom or dad necessarily translate into being a stellar manager?

Beyonce is just the most recent star to experience some of the trauma that comes along with hiring a parent to help shape a career. Bey, who made it big with Destiny’s Child before branching off and becoming a superstar solo artist, enlisted the help of both her mom and her dad from the start. Mom Tina took on the role of “stylist,” while dad Matthew stepped in as her manager. While things were seemingly going well, it was announced in March that Beyonce and her dad had “parted ways amicably” (she continues to work with her mother). Now, speculation has surfaced that the separation may not have been as friendly as previously reported.

Although we can’t really speak to the situation – neither Beyonce’s camp nor Live Nation are commenting – it has given us inspiration to look back at other celebrity/parent working relationships to help us decide whether or not hiring a family member is a good or bad idea in showbiz.

Lindsay Lohan

Let’s start with Lindsay Lohan. It’s no secret that drama follows this girl wherever she goes, so it should come as no surprise that her working relationship with her mom Dina is known to be somewhat of a disaster. Dina has worked as Lindsay’s manager despite constant criticism about the way she interacts with her eldest daughter. The Long Island native was known to constantly party with Lindsay, speak publicly about LiLo without her permission, and act as an enabler for the bad behavior we know Lindsay loves to get up to. Lindsay’s dad is also notorious for riding on his daughter’s coattails and making statement after statement about her wrecked reputation. Although never officially employed by Lindsay, Michael Lohan has managed to impact her career (probably for the worse).

Read on for our verdict on Lindsay’s working relationship with her parents as well as our thoughts on the Kardashians, the Simpsons and Britney Spears. Read More...

Weezer

On Tuesday (July 12), Weezer announced that they were partnering with Carnival Cruise Lines to launch a four-night voyage from Miami to Cozumel, Mexico called, appropriately enough "The Weezer Cruise" (aka "The whitest thing to hit the high seas since Thor Heyerdahl.")

The inaugural cruise sets sail in January, and boasts a lineup that includes not just the Weez, but Dinosaur Jr — and solo sets by both J. Mascis and Lou Barlow — Gene Ween, Wavves, and something/one called the Yacht Rock Review (which is appropriate, considering both the venue and the general pallor of everyone aboard). Fans who purchase tickets get access to all the shows, plus an exclusive Q&A with Weezer on the ship's lido deck, a photo op with the band and a sundry of other activities and amenities, including "swimming pools, water slides, relaxation decks, casino, mini-golf, ping-pong ... [and] karaoke."

Tickets start at just $699, though it should be noted that alcoholic beverages are not included (which is a shame, since being drunk is about the only way I'd be able to survive being trapped on a boat with Weezer fans). Then again, given the sheer amount of awkwardness that's sure to transpire on board, perhaps booze isn't even necessary. It'll be The Love Boat, only if Rivers Cuomo was Captain Stubing and that bass player dude was Isaac the Bartender (he'd have to get really tan, of course).

As such, below are some awesomely awkward moments I envision aboard the S.S. Weezer. Read More...

DMX

By Zachary Swickey

We previously reported that rapper DMX has had his prison sentence extended by 30 days due to multiple infractions behind bars, and sadly this comes as no surprise considering his many brushes with the law.

DMX first stormed the rap music scene with his loud bark and “don’t f**k with me” attitude in the late 1990s. In a feat that had only been done by Tupac, DMX released two number one albums in the same year, with his debut in May of ’98 and follow-up that December (which stayed at No. 1 for 3 weeks). X soon joined the trend of moonlighting as an actor and appeared in a few notable films as well. After five number one albums in a row, his streak was broken when 2006’s Year of the Dog… Again failed to achieve the same success (although, it did hit number two).

DMX wasn’t and still isn’t your average rapper. He has a track that features Marilyn Manson, yet has a prayer recorded on every album. In his autobiography and lyrics, he discusses his love of dogs at length yet has been convicted on animal cruelty charges multiple times. It also probably shouldn’t comes as a surprise that X’s dwindling sales somewhat correlate to his transgressions. MTV even got a look at his enthusiasm for speeding firsthand during the recording of his MTV Diary special.

At first it seemed like X had some “wrong place, wrong time” like when he was falsely accused of a stabbing in Denver. Then the trouble really started. Check out the utterly insane list of his past offenses we’ve compiled.

>>> June 28, 1999 – New Jersey police raid DMX’s home and charge the rapper with a slew of infractions, including animal cruelty, disorderly conduct and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police discovered 13 pit bulls, and six used alleged crack pipes. All of the charges were dropped when X agreed to make a public service announcements for the Humane Society.

>>> December 24, 2002 – Christmas got off to a bad start when X was charged with unsafe lane changing, failure to signal and possession of a forged instrument (i.e. fake ID).

Loving Demi Lovato's new song, "Skyscraper"? Well you're not alone! It seems that most of Hollywood agrees with you.

On Tuesday, the same day that Demi dropped the personal ballad, a slew of A-listers took to Twitter to send their love to Demi for putting out the track, which is about finding courage and strength after a difficult period in life. Given everything Demi's been through, it’s a very fitting theme for her big comeback track.

So, who exactly loves the song? Well, Demi's pal, Selena Gomez does. She tweeted, "SO, SO proud of @ddlovato #skyscraper Incredible, beautiful and so inspiring…"

Oh, yeah, Katy Perry really, really likes it too. "The new song Skyscraper by @ddlovato is pure perfection," she tweeted. "Her voice is one of the BEST undiscovered beauties. Can't wait for the full record."

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Underneath a starry sky on a warm summer night in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, Animal Collective took the stage for a nearly two hour set that left some fans highly satisfied with an outpouring of new material. While I found the setting and weather to be the perfect accompaniment for an Animal Collective concert, whose new wave, electronica, dreamy and arguably pop sound has garnered them a sizable following in the U.S., I could not stop wondering why I was having such a hard time getting into the mood of the show.

Considering it was seven songs before they played a recognizable crowd-pleaser, "Brother Sport," from their hit album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, I realized that I was not the only one having a difficult time adjusting to their new material.

"What is this song?" I heard mumbled from several fans in their late teens/early 20s. "When are they going to play [insert any one of their earlier song titles here]?"

Artists must go through a very complex stage of tour preparation when designing their set list. A careful line must be drawn that establishes how much of the older content can be played without overshadowing the material. In Brooklyn tonight, it seemed that they chose a route that shifted full gear into exclusively new material. Read More...

It's all about the actual All-Star Game today, with the big game set to take place in Arizona, but just days ago Nick Jonas had the pleasure of playing in the Taco Bell All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game, where he threw around the ball alongside celebs and legends like Bernie Williams, Mike Piazza and Ernie Banks.

"I was approached about being a part of the celebrity softball game at All-Star weekend and I'm obviously a huge baseball fan," he told MTV News about the chance to play alongside fellow celebs like Jordin Sparks and Chord Overstreet. "So I'm excited to get my softball in."

You see, the chance to play meant even more for Nick, since his team, The Road Dogs, isn't playing this season. Why? Well, Nick and his famous brothers, Joe and Kevin, aren't touring this summer.

(By the way, we were there with the Road Dogs in '09 and '10.)

"The Road Dogs are on hiatus this year, which makes me sad, but I can still go play some softball with celebrities and All-Stars," he said. "It'll be fun." He later added, "I've watched it every year for 18 years, so I'm excited to see it." Read More...

Movie premieres may look glamorous, but it's hard for things to stay that way when it's 90+ degrees outside. Yesterday was the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 at Lincoln Center in New York City, and I got to experience the madness first hand. I joined the several producers who made this an extremely successful live-stream event.

Amid the excitement and anticipation, everyone, including the celebrities, was feeling the heat. "I'm sweating like a pig in labor!" Daniel Radcliffe exclaimed.

Everyone important to the production was present at the film's US premiere. Chris Columbus, director of the first two Potter films, stopped by to speak with MTV News about the cast throughout the years and the sweltering heat, as did producer David Heyman, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and other major cast members.

I arrived at Lincoln Center around 2:30PM with the crew to set up shop on the red carpet and to prepare for all the interviews coming our way. Thankfully, I also spotted a Bed, Bath, and Beyond across the street.

Now that's where the real magic happens.

Working behind the scenes at a red carpet premiere is no easy task, but here are some items you may want to purchase to make the experience as comfortable as possible if you ever find yourself in this type of situation. Read More...

A phone call from an ex-girlfriend was the defining moment that led Michael Fitzpatrick to create the throwback indie pop sounds of Fitz and the Tantrums. Fitz, a dapper young David Bowie lookalike, had already spent years in Los Angeles as a sound engineer for producer Mickey Petralia (Beck’s Midnite Vultures), but had yet to discover the sound that truly defined him personally as an artist. Fitz’s ex explained that her neighbor was moving out in a hurry and had an organ that she thought he’d be interested in.

The same night Fitz brought his new organ home, he wrote the first song that would become the archetype of his new soul-driven sound: “Breakin’ the Chains of Love.” Inspired, Fitz sought to create an original Motown sound, with the saxophone taking place of the lead guitar. The singer recruited saxophonist James King, an old college friend. King suggested sultry singer Noelle Scaggs and drummer John Wicks also join the fold. Rounding out the band, Wicks brought in bassist Ethan Phillips and keyboardist Jeremy Ruzumna, who was previously the musical director for Macy Gray.

In December 2008, the group played their first show ever at the Hotel Café in Hollywood, which Fitz had quietly booked just one week after the group’s inception. The troupe worked the California scene and soon recorded their debut EP, Songs for a Breakup, Vol I, in the singer’s home in Los Angeles. After the EP’s release in August 2009, the band got their first big break when they got to open a stint of shows for Maroon 5. Rapper K’naan had unexpectedly dropped off Maroon’s college campus tour, and ten days later – after a recommendation from lead singer Adam Levine’s tattoo artist – Fitz and the Tantrums found themselves as the new opening act.

Justin Bieber

From MTV RapFix:

Nobody will accuse Kanye West of being the most likable of major music stars, with his much publicized outbursts in the media and abroad enabling many to label the Chicago superstar of having an ego the size of the Sears Tower. However, it appears that Mr. West has one fellow megastar buddy who happens to think he’s not as bad as he seems.

Teen heartthrob Justin Bieber defended his friend and past collaborator in an interview with XXL in the magazine's July/August issue, and Biebs gave ‘Ye the ultimate cosign.

Find out what he said, after the jump. Read More...
