You know, when we were 17 our lives consisted of school, never-ending phone convos and the occasional unsupervised party. We were living it up, or so we thought until we watched the season premiere of "When I Was 17" on MTV this Saturday featuring Bow Wow, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Colbie Caillat. From breaking Grammy Awards to crashing cars, each star shared outrageous stories from their teen years that totally put our own ones to shame. But which star's teen tales were the most memorable? Keep reading below to find out our top three favorites below.

3. Bow Wow Fails His License Test...Three Times!: Most teens can't wait to get behind the wheel, but few look forward to the driver's license exam they have to take to get there. Bow Wow was no different. At 17 he was already a star, and more than ready for his first set of keys. Unfortunately, he failed his driver's license exam...not once, but three times. In the series, Bow Wow reveals that the only reason he eventually passed the test was because a sympathetic DMV worker broke the rules to help him out. Wisely, he didn't name her. Otherwise, we're sure teens everywhere would be flocking to her booth.

2. Colbie Caillat Breaks Her Father's Grammy: When we attended raucous high school parties the most that got destroyed was the carpet. But at 17, Colbie's out-of-control house party resulted in a much more valuable casualty: her father's Grammy Award. The trophy was knocked over and split in two after a fight broke out at her house. Luckily for the singer though, she went on to win two of her own Grammys in the following years. We're guessing at least one of them went straight to her dad.

Twitpic, Lady Gaga

Fans of Lady Gaga are certainly used to seeing her decked out in a bikini – she frequently performs in two pieces in videos and in concert. More rare, however, is catching the oft-platformed superstar without her signature sky-high heels.

What fans might be even less used to seeing is Gaga catching a wave, in a bikini, without her shoes on. The star was spotted surfing, reportedly in Hawaii, and had this to say to fans who may be uncomfortable seeing Mother Monster out of her signature designer shoes: "yeah thats me. no heels baby."

(She also appears shoeless in her just-released “You and I” video.)

While we can't imagine Gaga going all Gidget on us and hanging with Moondoggie frequently, we're cool with her trying it out. And it seems she, surprisingly, is a pretty good surfer. In the above pic, she is certainly, as they say, hanging ten. Read More...

It’s a shame – but even Steve Angello will concede he doesn’t get to come to New York often. So you better believe the foundation has been laid for a knock-you-on-your-butt session of house music when Size Records hits Governor’s Island, NY, this weekend. In fact, when MTV News had the pleasure of linking with Angello earlier this summer, after revealing some Swedish House Mafia secrets, clearly his thoughts were already on the August 20 event and what he was planning on bringing to New York.

Tickets are sold out for the 5,000 capacity event being put on by our good friends at Pacha NY. But if fans come out the way they did to Miami Music Week earlier this year, expect to have fans lining the perimeter of the event just to catch a glimpse of the festivities. And while he may not be flanked by his Swedish House Mafia brethren, he’s bringing out Carl Louis & Martin Danielle, Thomas Gold and New York legend Junior Sanchez to help him deliver a heavy dose of dance music that New York will remember for months to come. Lady Gaga’s fans got the experience of the lifetime on Thursday night when Mother Monster graced our Times Squares studio stage to reveal that she is opening the 2011 Video Music Awards. Yet what fans didn’t see was that Gaga herself was getting the experience of a lifetime as well.

During “MTV First: Lady Gaga,” I got the opportunity to floor produce MTV News’ own Sway Calloway, and part of the task was to talk to Gaga backstage to give her a brief rundown of what she could expect during the show. When Sway and I went backstage to meet Gaga (who was at the time wearing a Louis Vuitton bibbed top and hot pants) she quickly embraced Sway like old friends. I extended my hand to introduce myself, but she pulled me in for a hug as well. As she began speaking, I almost forgot that I was standing next to the biggest pop star in the world … it was just like listening to a normal New York girl.

As we went through the format of the show, Gaga was beyond thrilled that she was getting the “Total Request Live” moment that she never had the opportunity to experience. She told us that she used to call in to “TRL” to vote for Britney Spears’ “I'm a Slave 4 U” and often dreamt that one day her fans would shut down Times Square just to get a glimpse of her. So when she found out that thousands of fans (appropriately dressed in their favorite Gaga outfits) gathered outside, you could see the genuine excitement in her eyes and the realization that something she spent years dreaming about was finally coming true. Last night during “MTV First: Lady Gaga,” Mother Monster revealed in spectacular fashion that she will be opening this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Standing in front of the massive windows in MTV’s Times Square studio, Gaga said, “I have a really big announcement, but I thought as usual instead of me announcing I would have Little Monsters announce for me.” With those words, a banner unfurled in the massive crowd outside reading, “GAGA TO OPEN VMAS!!”

The crowd, both in-studio and in Times Square, went wild, of course, and we got to thinking about past VMA openers. Lady Gaga is known as a killer live performer – her Monster Ball tour grew into a phenomenon and her performances at the 2009 VMAs and this year’s Grammys are already legendary. Will hers be the most memorable VMA-opening performance ever? Let’s take a look back at some of the best opening acts to get some perspective. Read More...
