Kat Von D

It's been an interesting couple of weeks for Kat Von D. After announcing that she and Jesse James called off their engagement late last month, the tatted reality starlet and her man announced they have decided to give it another try. However, the news is a bit bittersweet since it comes the same day that word came down that her TLC reality show, "LA Ink," has been canceled. Wah wuh.

OK, as we learned on a certain beloved 1980's sitcom, "You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and what do you have? The facts of life." So, if you're feeling a bit low about being unemployed, snuggle up with Jesse James (we mean someone has to) and blast these tunes. They're guaranteed to make you feel a little better. Read More...

Adele

By Sterling Wong

It’s Adele’s world and we’re just living in it. Since its release, Adele’s sophomore album, 21, has been No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for an amazing 12 non-consecutive weeks – that’s the most time any album has logged at the top since Santana’s “Supernatural” 11 years ago.

And come next Sunday, Adele fever will probably spike as the relatively low-profile soul diva hits the MTV Video Music Awards stage for the first time ever, competing for the title of most water cooler-worthy performance with the likes of Lady Gaga, Lil’ Wayne and Chris Brown.

Amy Doyle, executive vice president of music and talent at MTV, hyped Adele’s performance to the Associated Press, saying that Adele would “"bring chills down everybody's spine, if not bring them to tears, too,"”

Judging from that comment, I’m guessing that means that Adele will be performing her second single, “Someone Like You,” a powerful ballad that the British songstress penned herself.

If she does choose to perform “Someone,” the timing is great. “Rolling in the Deep” has been all over radio and TV for the entire summer, so it’s time for something new. And the slower and gentler sound of “Someone Like You” is perfect for the rapidly approaching fall.

I’m tremendously excited to hear Adele belt out “Someone Like You” because it is quite simply a brilliant song – one that will surely become a classic in the years to come. The story of the song is autobiographical, as Adele sings about the pain of trying to get over a devastating breakup. Read More...

Dreams came true for a bunch of Little Monsters tonight, as they got some face time with Lady Gaga during “MTV First: Lady Gaga.”

A handful of lucky fans got to join Gaga live at MTV's Times Square studio for the TV premiere of her latest video, "You and I." Looking radiant in a white dress, very large white hat and sunglasses, Gaga reveled in the adoration of her fans, offering hugs and handshakes as she made her way across the studio to the windows overlooking Times Square, where she was greeted by hundreds of screaming fans decked out in some of her best-known looks.

After the video, one especially lucky fan got to ask an on-air question (many more fans got a turn during the MTV.com live stream), and asked the pop star something that's been on our mind as well since first seeing the clip: "How do you have sex with a mermaid?"

"That's part of the metaphor - you can't," Gaga replied, explaining that "sometimes in love, you just can't make it work."

Gaga's fans in Times Square simply couldn't get enough of Mother Monster. “She's unique, she's special, she's crazy,” Gaga fan Danny told MTV News. Another fan, Anne Marie, is taken with Gaga’s strength, saying, “She fights for what she believes in and what she wants. She doesn’t back down for anybody.” Lil Monster Alex took it a step further, telling us that Gaga “freed my soul.”

Gaga explains the meaning of \"Yoü And I\" to Little Monsters in our studio.

Madonna

By James Dinh

It's hard for artists to keep things under wraps these days – especially when you're the Queen of Pop. Less than two months after Madonna's manager, Guy Oseary, revealed that the pop titan had begun recording her next album, a just-announced promotional contest with Smirnoff has inadvertently confirmed that Her Madgesty will embark on a tour.

According to the singer's website, Madonna has teamed up with the popular vodka brand for their latest promotional blitz called "Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project," which encourages fans from all around the world to share their nightlife stories via their Facebook page. Smirnoff will culminate the campaign on November 12 with 50 different parties taking place all over the globe.

In addition to submitting personal experiences, fans can enter an online dance competition, where finalists will be chosen to attend one of the global events and compete in a dance-off right in front of the pop queen. The winner of the contest may get a not-too-shabby offer to join Madge on her next tour as one of her dancers.

"What attracted me to the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project is the combination of participating in the celebration of nightlife around the world and the opportunity to discover the world's best unknown dancers," Madonna said a press release. "The best dancers are always in the clubs looking for the most original experience, just like Smirnoff is doing." Read More...

Little Monsters are excited to hear what Lady Gaga's big announcement is going to be tonight. They know that she's going to perform at the 2011 Video Music Awards, but they don't know what else she could possibly be sharing when she sits down with Sway for "MTV First: Lady Gaga," where she'll also open up about her just released "Yoü And I" clip.

And until she makes her big announcement, her fans are celebrating the clip. Danny said that he loves Gaga so much because "she's unique, she's special, she's crazy," adding that the standout moment from "Yoü And I" is "her as a mermaid, Yuyi, cause she looks beautiful."

Meanwhile Pedro complimented her revolutionary spirit, saying, "She's not afraid to change music." For him, seeing Gaga wearing little makeup playing the piano stands out as a key scene: "She played the piano. She just looked really bare to me and it looked really unique."

Anne Marie noted that in the video "she showed many sides of her … it was great the whole thing." She added that she loves Mother Monster so much because "she fights for what she believes in and what she wants. She doesn’t back down for anybody."

Christian agreed that it's her fighting spirit that makes her stand out and while many are applauding the Yuyi appearance in the video, it's another Gaga alter ego he's into. "Jo Calderone, ‘cause he was such a different character and you wouldn't expect that from her," he said. Read More...

Lady Gaga isn't afraid to share the spotlight with anyone. She's already done it with Beyonce and Elton John, to name a few. But this fall her collabo quotient is getting a new boost thanks to some super high-profile projects waiting in the wings.

Gaga has hooked up with crooning legend Tony Bennett on his forthcoming Duets II album. She'll appear on a cover of the Frank Sinatra classic "The Lady is a Tramp." Bennett doesn't think Gaga is going anywhere anytime soon, saying, "I never met a more talented person in my life ... I think she's going to become as big as Elvis Presley."

The world may stop for a second in September when Cher drops her duet with the singer, the aptly titled "The Greatest Thing.” Gaga and Cher have quite a history together. At the 2010 VMAs, it was Cher (who at 64 strutted out on stage in her “If I Could Turn Back Time” bodysuit) who handed a meat dress-wearing Gaga the VMA for Video of the Year for “Bad Romance.” Read More...

Motley Crue

By Zachary Swickey

It’s hard to believe that hard-partying troupe Mötley Crüe are celebrating thirty years of rock and roll excess this year. (I bet their shocked themselves!) This weekend, the Crüe are going to celebrate the only way they know – heading to their old stomping grounds and closing out this year’s Sunset Strip Music Festival.

Drummer Tommy Lee and his band of brothers are bringing out all the stops. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lee revealed the band’s full stage setup – pyro, bikini dancers, etc. – will be squeezed onto the strip, which is rather impressive considering it also includes Lee’s famous 360-degree vertical drum rig that spins wildly in all directions when performing his aerial drum solos at shows.

“I can’t even tell you what everyone has gone through to make this happen on the streets of the Strip. But we got our full show in there and the band is thrilled,” said Lee.

Today, the fourth-annual Sunset Strip Music Festival kicks off with three days of celebrating music on the historical 1.6-mile length of Sunset Blvd. – home of iconic venues such as the Whisky a Go Go, the Roxy, the Viper Room and the Key Club. First up, the Crüe will be honored, and likely roasted, by some fellow friends and artists, including comedian Dane Cook, Ray Manzarek of The Doors, David Johansen of the New York Dolls and Neil Strauss, who co-wrote the band’s top-selling biography, “The Dirt.” The group will headline the festivities on Saturday night, which will also feature performances from reformed rockers Bush, Public Enemy and She Wants the Revenge. We are just about a week into our Ultimate VMA Showdown and the polls are really heating up.

Classic MTV artists like Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi and, in some categories, Madonna are garnering big numbers, leaving more recent artists like Lady Gaga and Britney Spears, who typically dominate our polls, struggling to keep up.

How’s your favorite artist faring so far? Let’s take a look.

Most Iconic VMA Performance

This category has basically turned into a showdown between Michael Jackson and Bon Jovi. MJ’s medley of hits at the 1995 VMAs is leading the way with 45 percent of the vote, though Bon Jovi’s take on their classic “Wanted Dead or Alive” from the 1989 show trails it by less than 2 percent. The number separating the two is insanely small, respective to the crazy amount of votes cast in this category (which we will reveal after polls close).

Our two main girls, Gaga and Britney, are in third and fourth place, respectively, though they trail the two leaders substantially and are themselves separated by just 0.1 percent. That said, the number of votes for Gaga’s 2009 performance of “Paparazzi” and Britney’s sexy “I’m A Slave 4 U” from the 2001 VMAs are substantial. Very substantial.

Can they catch up to the poll leaders? Maybe. Keep voting, Gaga and Britney fans, your girls need you!
Surprisingly less substantial are the number of votes for Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” from the first-ever VMAs in 1984. It’s one of the most known and commented upon performances in VMA history – and many look at it as one of the major events that kicked Madonna’s career into the pop stratosphere – yet it is holding court with a mere 0.84 percent of the vote. Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber hit Twitter on Wednesday to keep his fans abreast of his latest music dealings. He's currently in the studio working on his new album and he's got some interesting musical minds backing him up on it. He tweeted that he's working with Tricky Stewart and the lesser-known producer Soundz.

"in the studio writing with @TrickyStewart - last time this happened a song called BABY happened. LEGGO. #believe," he tweeted. "At the studio writing for my album with @trickystewart and @soundzdope follow them ... #BELIEVE."

As the recording session proceeded, a bit of a Twittermance started between the three fellas. Now that Bieber is 17 and moving out of Tweenville, working with an edgier production team is certainly the way to go to make the transition from cutie pie teen to full-fledged crossover adult sensation.
