Cali rockers Young the Giant are still riding high on the wave of success of their self-titled debut album, and took some time out from their busy schedule to make a stop at the AV Club to perform a wicked cover of R. Kelly’s 2003 monster jam, “Ignition (Remix).”
Draped in hefty rented fur coats, the band clearly went all out with their ode to the R&B crooning master. The band was given the choice of a few songs to cover but ultimately went with “Ignition (Remix)” over Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way,” because they wanted to go with something “different.”
When asked if their choice was out of reverence or irony, frontman Sameer Gadhia responded, “There is a bit of irony actually, but we’re trying to be somewhat serious."
Their mellow rendition really isn’t too shabby either. It’s pretty interesting to see Gadhia sing a song laden in cheesy lyrics with such great bravado. Check it out below:
Young The Giant’s hit debut was officially released digitally by Roadrunner Records back in 2010. They are scheduled for nearly a half dozen music festival gigs this summer, including Bonnaroo and Canada’s beloved Osheaga. Hopefully, the band will be revisiting the studio at some point in 2012, because we anxiously await the group’s follow-up.
For another totally awesome cover from YTG, check out what they did with “Empire Ants” by the Gorillaz for their MTV Unplugged sessions below.
