Oprah 50 Cent

By Cristina Recino

On this week's episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter," the big O and 50 Cent finally squashed their beef. In the candid one-on-one interview, they discussed 50's tough childhood and his pledge to feed 1 billion people through the sales of his Street King energy drink.

Oprah has continuously denounced the view of women in hip-hop culture and the use of the N-word, which at one point instigated a beef between the talk show titan and the rapper. During the interview, 50 explained that he saw O’s stance as an attack on him personally. "I would see moments where you would discuss your feelings on the culture, and everything that was wrong with the culture was on my CD," 50 said. "And I was like, 'She doesn't like me.'"

At the time, 50 responded to Oprah’s stance by saying she caters to middle-aged white women and doesn't understand hip-hop culture. He even went as far as to name his pet dog after the talk show host, which Oprah confronted him about during the interview. "I heard you had a bitch named Oprah, that's what I heard," Winfrey said.

But the sit-down revealed a different side of the MC, which took Oprah aback. 50 Cent talked about the difference between his rap persona and Curtis Jackson. "I've always had to be two people," he said. "I've had to be my grandmother's baby in the house and be more like what people perceive 50 Cent as outside. I'm not even allowed to curse around her."

Ultimately, that and 50's commitment to charity were enough for the two to work past their former feud.

But this isn’t the only settled beef Oprah’s had on her hands. Over the years, she's compiled an impressive list of celebrity feuds turned friendships.

Flaming Lips

By Zachary Swickey

Anyone keeping up with this year’s NBA Finals is aware that the Oklahoma City Thunder are on a roll, and quite possibly on their way to their first national championship. OKC-based experimental rockers The Flaming Lips are proud of their hometown team and recorded “Thunder Up! Racing for the Prize” in their honor.

The song is a re-recording of a signature Lips track, “Race for the Prize,” off their iconic 1999 effort The Soft Bulletin, with some new winning-centric lyrics: "Theirs is to win / We win with them / They'll keep fighting for Oklahoma" Wayne Coyne sings, while the shouted refrain of "Thunder Up!" is repeated in the background.

This is by no means the first time the music world has collided with sports. There are plenty of moments worth mentioning.

Take for example the track that made Wiz Khalifa a household name: “Black and Yellow.” The track is Khalifa’s ode to the city of Pittsburgh and the colors of its professional sports teams. Prince recorded a similar tribute (“Purple and Gold”) to the Minnesota Vikings in 2010 after witnessing a game against the Dallas Cowboys.

>> Flaming Lips Insist Oklahoma City Thunder 'Will Win' NBA Championship

Artists aren’t the only ones getting in on the action; entire teams will occasionally craft a song together. The Green Bay Packers once spoofed the craze of the “Macarena” dance movement with the “Pacarena” in 1996. However, the most memorable is the 1985 Chicago Bears' “Super Bowl Shuffle,” a rap tune which has been parodied countless times and was inexplicably nominated for a Grammy for Best Rhythm and Blues Performance by a Duo or Group. They lost the Grammy, but won the Super Bowl.

Of course, some might be more familiar with the attempts from athletes themselves at making music.

There are plenty to choose from – Ron Artest, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson – but the one we’ll never forget is Shaq’s foray into the music world. His ’93 debut effort, Shaq Diesel, was eventually certified platinum and he guest rapped on “2 Bad,” a track off Michael Jackson’s 1995 HIStory album. His next effort went Gold, but his albums since have missed the mark. His last disc was released all the way back in ’98, but there’s always time for a comeback.

It doesn’t get much hotter than One Direction. Except maybe if you took their token blonde hottie and match him up with sweetheart songbird and "X Factor" judge Demi Lovato. Now, that'd be a young pop power couple!

Which brings us to the question that everyone is asking — are these two young superstars the newest couple in Hollywood?

Ryan Seacrest got the scoop on his radio show today (June 14) straight from Niall Horan himself. He explained that he and Lovato have been using Skype to chit chat – and that Demi "is a cool girl."

>> One Direction Tease Video Project, Need Your Help

Well, if Niall thinks Demi is "cool," and 19-year-old Demi has already admitted to finding him "adorable," it seems like they are leaning in the direction of their rumors! However, Horan went on to tell Seacrest, "We’ve spoken alright, yeah … So, I got in contact with her, she’s really nice. Um, I don’t know what’s going to happen."

They might not know what’s in store for them yet, but we bet the two teen dreams will figure it out fast.

It looks like they will have plenty to Skype about in the near future, huh?

You’re most certainly not hip with the latest in hit television if you’ve yet to catch an episode of HBO’s newest offering of comedy gold, “Girls.” The show was created by 26-year-old Lena Dunham and has been called the “Sex and the City” for a new generation. Now, Dunham appears to be mirroring her character's outer-borough leanings by snatching a cozy, 800-square-foot apartment in New York City’s Brooklyn Heights area.

Real estate blog The Realestalker reports that Dunham’s new pad is a one-bedroom co-op in a “large and dignified, pre-war doorman building” in a lush area on Hicks Street. Property records indicate that she paid $500,000 for her new digs, which are found on an “urbanely charming” tree-lined street.

For those surprised that Dunham chose the more familial Brooklyn Heights area over hipster-friendly Williamsburg (or Greenpoint, where the show's characters live), she explained her reasoning in Sunday’s New York Times thusly, saying, “We lived there all through my high-school career, so I have an intense attachment to it. Other people think of Brooklyn Heights as where you become elderly, but I think of it as where you try pot for the first time.”

For those unfamiliar, “Girls” follows the lives of a group of twenty-somethings as they navigate their way through life in the Big Apple. The show is produced by comedy genius Judd Apatow and has been a runaway hit. Some major aspects of the main character were inspired by some of Dunham’s real-life experiences.

The show was created by Dunham following the success of her indie hit “Tiny Furniture,” which was a semi-autobiographical film about her moving back into her parents’ loft following college. Dunham directed “Furniture” at the spry age of 24 on a budget of only $50,000, which helped pave the way for “Girls.”

Get More: Usher, Music News

By Christina Garibaldi

With the release of Usher’s latest video for "Scream" and in celebration of his seventh studio album, Looking 4 Myself, we here at MTV News decided it was time for us to take a trip down memory lane and look back at Usher’s top five sexiest videos of all time. Believe us, this was not easy, we had to spend hours looking at videos of Usher baring his abs, showing off his sultry dance moves, flashing his charming smile and even shots of him in his boxers. Somehow we managed to get through it.

Here are our top five sexiest Usher videos of all time:

"Nice & Slow"

Usher had everyone calling out U-S-H-E-R after seeing the video for the 1998 hit single "Nice & Slow." This video quickly made people realize that Usher had all the right moves as he set out on a mission to rescue his lady love, played by Kimora Lee Simmons. Usher races through Paris, fights off kidnappers, escapes an exploding building and in his spare time manages to grind the camera and jam out with a guitar, sans shirt, in front of the Eiffel Tower.

Listen, everyone makes mistakes, but it’s a whole other ball of wax when one of music's biggest publications can't tell two of the most well-known and influential female rockers in the world apart in its review of one of their albums – in this case, the artist's first in 7 years!

Alongside NME's review of Fiona Apple’s fourth studio album – The Idler Wheel is Wiser than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords will Serve You more than Ropes will ever do – appears a picture of Jagged Little Pill crooner Alanis Morissette rather than the very recognizable Miss Apple.

Yikes!

Rebecca Nicholson, Twitter

The review is notably a positive one, writing, “The lyrics may emerge from a bottomless pit of despair, but they float bewitchingly on some sublime music,” but it can’t help but lose some credibility considering the mix-up.

>> Fiona Apple's 'Every Single Night' Video: Ignore The Octopus Hat

The mix-up was first noticed by Twitter user @beccanicholson, who uploaded the magazine scan with the caption, “Er isn't that Alanis Morissette? *lilithfairface”

So far NME and Apple have yet to comment on the incident.

Animal Collective

By Zachary Swickey

Just last month, experimental rockers Animal Collective finally provided details on Centipede Hz – the group’s first album since ‘09’s heralded Merriweather Post Pavillion – and now they have announced a wealth of tour dates to go along with their new anticipated effort.

In support of the new album, Animal Collective have lined up a string of shows all over the map from September through November. The tour kicks off stateside on September 18 in Seattle before wrapping up in Switzerland on November 20.

Judging by the band’s NYC gig in Prospect Park last summer, one can expect the set to be heavy on new material. During their performance, the band tested several new songs (which obviously no one knew whatsoever, though many of them will likely appear on Centipede) before playing a track people were familiar with. All-in-all, they only ended up playing three songs off Merriweather – the album that essentially broke the band after nearly a decade together.

Centipede Hz is set to drop on September 4 through London-based indie Domino Records. The album is expected to come with 11 tracks, but as previously reported, new tunes “Honeycomb” and “Gotham” found on a newly-released 7” will not be included.

LOS ANGELES – "Why Catch Without Arms?" was the first question we asked Dredg when talking to the band before their Sunday (June 10) gig at the iconic Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles where they performed their aforementioned third album from start-to-finish along with some other B-side material.

“Well, we had already done this before with our first two records, and this is one we hadn’t done yet. We had done Leitmotif and El Cielo out here already, and Pariah in Germany," explained guitarist Mark Engles.

The band had only performed the album on one other Cali date – although they mentioned other non-Cali shows are a possibility later this fall – a couple nights before, but they had apparently rehearsed it plenty as they didn't seem the slightest bit rusty. As they ripped into the album's opening track, "Ode to the Sun," fans erupted into screams as if they were all witnessing the sun itself for the very first time.

Dredg's last effort – 2011’s Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy –divided fans with its pop-centered sound, which was likely due to the influence of producer Dan the Automator (an underground hip-hop production legend). When we asked the band how the collab came about, it sounded pretty simple. "He remixed one of our songs in ’06 maybe. That’s basically how. It started with the remix, which turned into a friendship," said singer Gavin Hayes.

The next song of the night was the album's first single, "Bug Eyes," which features an introduction from singer Gavin Hayes wailing on his slide guitar before the song eventually takes flight. I couldn't help but notice drummer Dino Campanella constantly tucking his left drum stick under his right arm during "Not that Simple" when he would be required to play the keys and drums simultaneously. (Imagine how tricky that must be?) He destroyed and pillaged his kit with ferocity throughout the entire set – it's no wonder Shaun Lopez of Crosses describes him as the "Ivan Drago of drums." Bieber

By Meredith Goldberg-Morse

Justin Bieber's new album, Believe, may not drop until June 19, but those of you jonesing for a taste of the teen idol's new tunes are in luck — snippets of Biebs’ new album have made their way online.

Previewed tracks include R&B-inspired slow jam "Right Here" featuring Drake and the Nicki Minaj collaboration "Beauty and the Beat." The sampler also includes a teaser of "Maria," which is reportedly the Canadian croonster’s musical response to the false accusations made by Mariah Yeater last year that he was the father of her child. The song, which Bieber compares to the similarly-themed Michael Jackson classic "Billie Jean," will only appear on the deluxe addition of Believe.

Bieber’s next single, "As Long As You Love Me," drops in full today on iTunes. The pop star has been hitting Twitter all day with hourly reminders that his collaboration with Big Sean will be available at 3 p.m. EST.

The album’s first single, popular ode to fondue and swag “Boyfriend,” has already garnered the singer comparisons to another famous Justin.

If the Believe sampler is any indication, be forewarned — there may be a severe increase in hot and bothered teenage girls swarming record stores (and internet fansites) come June 19.

Check out Bieber's mentor Usher talking about whether he and the 18-year-old are in a friendly competition for record sales (Usher's Looking 4 Myself drops tomorrow) below.

Paris Jackson

By Zachary Swickey

Michael Jackson’s beautiful 14-year-old daughter, Paris, has admitted that she is bullied in school.

In a new interview with Oprah Winfrey on her OWN program "Oprah’s Next Chapter," Paris explained, "People try, but it doesn't always work. At school and some people try to cyber bully me. They try to get to me with words, but that doesn't really work."

Paris admits being the King of Pop's daughter has made it tough for her to make friends and she has to be weary of their possible ulterior motives. “If I feel someone is being fake to me, I will just push away," she told Oprah.

Paris even talked about the surgical masks her father would make her and her brothers wear whenever appearing in public. She admitted being as perplexed as we were at the time, but age has given her some perspective on what her father was trying to do and it makes sense now.

"I understand it now – why my dad would want our faces to be covered. When we went out without him we wouldn't be recognized," she explained.

Paris said such precautions are the reason she had a “normal childhood, including trips to the children's arcade and restaurant Chuck E. Cheese's."

"He told us that when he was younger he didn't really have a childhood," she revealed of her famous father. "He would always be stuck in the studio singing while the kids were out playing. He wanted us to have that.”
