by Melanie Wolfson

When my supervisor asked if I wanted to go to a shoot with Katy Perry, I'll admit that I was pretty pumped. Not that I'm Perry's #1 fan, by any means, but I have definitely rocked out to "I Kissed a Girl" more times than I can count (you know you're guilty too!) and was excited to meet the pretty face with the cool outfits behind the song.

As I piled into a cab with the rest of the small crew we were allowed to bring over to the EMI headquarters, I imagined Perry would be this totally awesome, down-to-earth sort of chick that I could grab a beer with. But my first impression? Not quite what I had imagined.

Perry walked into the lobby from the room where she had just finished an interview, and proceeded to shout (jokingly), "I can't do this anymore!" She then picked up a copy of Paper magazine — she's this month's cover girl — and threw it on the floor, saying, "Ugh! Who is this? What a diva!"

It was definitely amusing to watch Perry poke fun at herself. However, once we had our 20 minutes of exclusive time with Perry, I watched as Kim Stolz asked Perry about everything from her current tour to her breakup with Travis McCoy to whether the song that made her popular had any truth value (yes, she has kissed a girl ... and liked it). She became more what I thought she'd be like as the interview progressed, even though her answers to some questions made me wonder how many times she had used the same line.

I had a couple of minutes of my own with Perry, so I introduced myself as an intern and she was more than willing to offer her opinion about those in my shoes.

With her fist raised, Perry noted, "I love interns, because interns become CEOs. Yeah!"

Thanks, Katy, I hope you're right.

Beyond the makeup, expensive-looking black heels with gold embellishments and talk about her new house in Malibu, California, Perry came off as just a normal girl — albeit one who has made it big in the music biz.

In the end, I liked Katy Perry. Her initial actions may have thrown me off, but I'm sure if I had an album certified platinum and chart-topping singles, I'd get tired of all the interviews too.

Hey, ladieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees! (And the rest of you.) We've got a bunch of stories today, and just a few happen to be about some of our favorite females.

Did you see Lady Gaga and her piano made of bubbles last night on "American Idol"? Well, the 23-year-old pop princess made news yesterday when her first two singles, "Just Dance" and newer hit "Poker Face," both reached #1. The last artist to do the same was Christina Aguilera (who's copying whom now?). Our very own Jocelyn Vena gave us the rundown on Gaga's best looks.

Speaking of looks, Zooey Deschanel and Katy Perry share a certain retro aesthetic, and the actress has had about enough of the comparisons.

Watch the video, have a great day and keep checking back in!

When Katy Perry and Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden were spotted in the same place, at the same time, over Valentine's Day in Las Vegas, rumors began circulating that the pair was canoodling. However, Katy has taken to her blog to insist that's not the case.

In a blog post titled "I Wanna Be Like Grace Kelly," Perry, who broke up with Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy earlier this year, insisted that she and Madden are nothing more than friends. "Oh kittens! It's two pseudo-famous people sitting next to each other … doesn't mean we were bumping uglies!" she wrote. "You know I don't just do that with anyone! That's just how the media works, as you can tell.

"I was there celebrating a really fun show and a boozy Valentine's with all my good friends. We were like a group of 25." she continued. "Benji is a nice young fellow, but my heart really belongs to [my cat] Kitty Purry," she wrote, adding that it also belongs to her friend, actor Markus Molinari.

And in case you're wondering why Perry wants to be Grace Kelly, well perhaps her trip to Monte Carlo, where Kelly happened to be a crowned princess, has something to do with it. "Oh shayth do I have frequent flyer milez for days," she wrote. "I wonder if you can cash in frequent flyer miles for a boyfriend rather than just dinners and gift certificates for Starbucks? 'How many miles for Brad Pitt, pls?' "

Editor's note: After this blog entry was published on Monday, People.com ran a correction stating that its report of Katy Perry's Los Angeles show, upon which this blog entry was based, contained erroneous reporting, particularly with regard to Perry's comments about Travis McCoy. MTV News regrets spreading the erroneous news.

What happened, Katy Perry? We thought this whole mess with Travis McCoy and how you make big sweeping public statements about him was over. And, we thought we vowed we never were going to talk about it ever again. Remember?

And now, 10 days after you said you were joking about being celibate, here we are once again wondering why it is you're bringing up your former flame in concert when you know you should be singing about kissing girls and getting all excited about the Grammy awards on Sunday.

"Girls, if you have ever dated a boy — specifically the lead singer from Gym Class Heroes — don't do it!" you reportedly said in concert on Saturday in Los Angeles, according to People magazine. "Boys should have a heart. You know what I mean girls? Boys just want the milk, but they don't want to buy the cow."

You've said that people misinterpret your onstage missives about boys who are presumably Travis or not Travis — that people take what you say out of context — but this time you've basically called Travis out, so there's no take-backs. I will give you the benefit of the doubt, though, and will assume what you meant was that you wanted more out of the relationship than he was willing to give. (Remember that rumor about him proposing to you at the top of the Eiffel Tower? Perhaps that was a sore subject to bring up.)

Anyways, Katy, we're going to guess this was a moment of weakness — that you let your broken heart overtake your brain for a moment and out came the Travis slip. We'll let it go this time, but I can't say the same for the next!

Maybe the girl-pop world is taking inspiration from President Barack Obama's renewed interest in green technology, but for whatever reason, there's a lot of song recycling going on lately.

First there was Britney Spears covering "American Idol" wannabe Joanna Pacitti's "Out From Under" on her Circus album. Now comes word that the original "Idol," Kelly Clarkson, is rehashing a Katy Perry castoff for her upcoming album.

According to Perez Hilton, Clarkson has reheated "I Do Not Hook Up," a song written by Perry three years ago with new "Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi and producer Greg Wells. Though representatives for Clarkson and Perry did not return e-mails requesting comment, Hilton claims that Clarkson has reimagined the song for her All I Ever Wanted comeback album.

"Hook Up" seems custom-made for Clarkson, with opening lyrics begging a train-wreck boyfriend to put down the bottle and get it together amid warnings that "boys will be boys." The song has a driving pop-rock energy and a sing-songy chorus that paints the singer as a hard-to-get girl who doesn't come cheap. "Oh, no, I do not hook up, up/ I go slow, so if you want me, I don't come cheap/ Keep your thing in your pants/ And your heart on your sleeve," Perry sings in her demo version of the song.

Wanted has already raised hopes that Clarkson can bounce back from the disappointment of her My December album, mostly thanks to the already-hit first single, "My Life Would Suck Without You." It helps, of course, that "Suck" sounds quite a bit like Clarkson's breakthrough hit "Since U Been Gone" and leaves the heavier guitars and somber lyrics of December behind.

But it gets better. A couple of weeks ago, Idolator suggested that another Perry track, "Long Shot," might also be on the Clarkson album, whose track list has not yet been announced. The quirky, breathless tune has Perry frantically hiccoughing lyrics about — what else? — an overwhelming love. "It's a long shot/ Just to beat the odds/ The chance is we won't make it/ But I know if I don't take it, there's no chance," Perry sings over a pseudo-ska-rock backing track.

Maybe at this point, we should assume everything Katy Perry says about her personal life is one big joke. And maybe we should assume that if she says one thing, the next day she just might backtrack and say that she meant something else.

Basically, we need to take every word uttered by Perry with one giant grain of salt. Why? Well, in today's edition of "I didn't mean what I said," Perry insists that yesterday's celibacy vow was taken out of context and was meant to be a joke.

Here's the quote: "I've actually taken a vow of celibacy this year," the Grammy nominee told TV Guide. "No kissing anyone. Just my cat: Kitty Purry."

And here's Katy's retraction: "I am not going to be celibate," Katy told reporters during a conference call, People reports. "That was a joke, and any fine journalist would have got that." The self-proclaimed "prankster and jokester" added, "Please, celibacy for the whole year? I'd rather die."

This is only the latest in a long line of over-share regrets made by Katy Perry recently in regards to her breakup earlier this month with Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy.

She, of course, would speak candidly about it (like at that concert in L.A.) and then say people were misinterpreting her and that she in fact wasn't really talking about him at all (like when she blogged only a day after the concert report surfaced).

This isn't much different from when she wouldn't talk to MTV News about the breakup, instead opting to plug her tour and Grammy nod, but then she blogged about her sadness just days later. "So, my post tonight started very melancholy. The usual," she blogged. "Mostly just a pity party, I suppose. We all throw them ... no one ever comes though, especially [to] mine."

So you know what, Katy? We're going to oblige, and we're officially not going to RSVP to any more of those pity parties.

Oh, well, can you give us something about it? Because, really, this breaks our heart as much as it breaks yours.

"Well, it's a new year, and I'm very focused," she told MTV News on the red carpet of the Critics' Choice Awards.

Yeah, yeah, we said that already — but what about you and Travis? What went wrong?

"I have a tour coming up on January 23 called the Hello Katy Tour, and I'm putting all my energy and efforts into that."

Oh, that's cool, you have a tour coming up. That should be fun — but have you spoken to Travis lately? How's he doing?

"I really don't know how you follow [2008] up. I'm kind of just putting one step in front of the other, and I never expected any of it to happen, so I don't expect it to always happen perfect every time, you know?"

Yeah, 2008 was a big year for you. "I Kissed a Girl," blah, blah, blah — but are you working on any Travis songs? Will we see that on your next record?

"I'm constantly knocking on wood and freaking out, saying, 'Really? They want me to do that?!? OK! Really? Presenting at the Critics' Choice Awards? Great!' Or at the Grammys, which, by golly, is going to be a fun, fun night."

Yeah, the Grammys. I bet they'll be a blast — but will it be hard not having Travis by your side? Do you know who you're going to bring instead?

"Fruit."

Oh. So I guess we're not going to talk about Travis then ...

(Thanks, Tarvaris Jackson!) No, the reason 2009 is starting on such a bad note is that my favorite couple of 2008 has called it quits. That's right, Katy Perry and Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy apparently are no more.

It's difficult to say that I didn't see this one coming. After all, Perry — who first appeared as a blip on the radar with a cameo in Gym Class Heroes' "Cupid's Chokehold" video — shot to worldwide fame in '08, thanks mostly to her penchant for kissing girls (and liking it). She became a sex symbol, a lightning rod for criticism and, uh, a doll. McCoy, on the other hand, released an album that got a fairly underwhelming response. Oh, and he got tattoos of Hall and Oates on his hands. Through it all, they appeared happy, but Perry had eclipsed McCoy and become the more famous of the two. She was the one people asked about in interviews — whether it was about "I Kissed a Girl" or her face-plant into a Quinceañera cake (or sometimes, both) — and McCoy was probably getting tired of it (he sure sounded that way in this blog post).

Still, I held out hope that things would work out. In mid-December, there was the swirl of rumors that the couple had gotten engaged, rumors that were promptly — and rather curtly — shot down by Perry herself. And then: nothing. At least until the breakup, that is.

Apparently, they were broken up due to distance (both spent most of '08 on the road) and the strain of a relationship spent mostly in the spotlight. And if it's really over, well, then that makes me kind of sad. And not just because we never got the chance to give them a cute couple name ("Kavis"? "Traty"?), but because if two misfits — the daughter of a preacher who loves cherry Chapstick and a guy from central New York who loves "Maneater" — can't make it work, well, who can? Is love under great duress even possible? Why do we even bother getting out of bed each morning?

So yes, I am saddened by the loss of Kavis. Yet somehow I will manage to press on. Just like they are. In the days since the split, Perry has blogged about unicorns pooping Lucky Charms and McCoy has filmed himself getting ill-advised tattoos whilst drunk with T-Pain. It appears that all is right with the world, and that both will survive. And so will I. Somehow ...

So, this week we gave everyone else a chance to chime in with their own lists and explain (or defend) their choices. You'll find the staff faves of 2008 all together here.

By Jocelyn Vena, Writer

Let's face it, 2008 was the year of the pop artist. And, since I am the resident pop expert around these parts, I decided to make my top 10 list all about the greatest pop albums to hit the charts in the last 12 months.

10. Pink, Funhouse: Her tough-girl attitude paid off with this album. She performed her single, "So What," at the VMAs and soon after, it was everywhere.

9. New Kids on the Block, The Block: They took us all back to 1988, and that time-traveling paid off. They had a hit album, some catchy singles and a successful tour.

8. Leona Lewis, Spirit: "Bleeding Love" was inescapable, because Americans love a sultry British songstress.

7. Katy Perry, One of the Boys: Love her or hate her, "I Kissed a Girl" left its mark on 2008 and she solidified herself as a kitschy pop artist.

6. Beyoncé, I Am ... Sasha Fierce: Beyoncé split her personality in an attempt to prove to everyone that she isn't boring, with pretty good results.

5. Miley Cyrus, Breakout: Miley, and her album, were more of a phenomenon than anything else.

4. Jonas Brothers, A Little Bit Longer: The Jonas Brothers showed everyone that some catchy music and skin-tight jeans will always set teen girls' hearts aflutter.

3. Demi Lovato, Don't Forget: Demi, how could we forget? This year she went from that girl in "Camp Rock" to a certifiable pop star.

2. Britney Spears, Circus: OK, so it seemed like Britney Spears should have been at the top. And, admittedly, she had an amazing comeback. She proved to everyone she's still hot and sexy and can bust out a great song or two about being all of those things.

1. Taylor Swift, Fearless: Despite (or because of?) her tendency to over-share details about her relationship with Joe Jonas (which is both annoying and amazing), she certainly ruled 2008. She was nominated for a VMA, and Fearless has sold over 1.5 million records. If that doesn't make her album the most successful pop album of 2008, I don't know what would.

Thursday night at Los Premios (which are basically MTV's Latin American VMAs, if you will), Katy Perry kissed the floor. And I liked it!

At the end of her Quinceañera-themed performance, the singer belly-flopped into a giant birthday cake, only to then misjudge how slippery she would be while covered in cake batter and icing. Whoops X3!

After my 80th view of the clip, it occurred to me that MTV should rush production on "Celebrity Double Dare" immediately! Seriously, how genius would that be?

Who wouldn't want to watch Rihanna and Beyoncé desperately look for a red flag by picking a giant prop nose? Hell, if real celebs don't want to participate, I'd still get satisfaction from watching Spencer and Heidi wipe out in a ball pit. And don't you think Britney would kill to be in the same room as that giant waffle obstacle? The possibilities are endless, folks!

I'm all for giving myself an extra gig, but I would campaign for Marc Summers to ditch the Food Network and join the MTV family again. Come on, Marc-y Marc! That "Unwrapped" show has run its course. You've seen one candy assembly line, you've seen 'em all! Don't you miss asking insanely easy trivia and then watching a bunch of people get pelted with eggs in order to win Casios and cassette players? At the very least, you won't have to avoid that floozy Sandra Lee at the Food Network Christmas Party anymore!

So, trusty MTV readers, if watching Katy Perry slip and slide across a stage tickles you as much as it does me, I think you should leave a comment and dare (then, double dare) the MTV big wigs to "take the physical challenge" of making my "D2: Celebrity Edition" a reality. Or at the very least, next year's VMA's should take place in a Jello pit!
