When we saw how hot Rihanna looked in her tuxedo at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute gala on Monday night, we were reminded that she's certainly not the first chica to turn fancy menswear into an androgynous fashion statement. Here are some of our favorite ladies to go black-tie in the public eye:

Celine Dion: For the 1999 Academy Awards, the diva mixed things up by opting for white and then, apparently styled by by Kris Kross, she wore the jacket backwards! Let's not even get started on the hat.

Madonna: Of course, what Madonna wore at the 2005 VMAs was greatly overshadowed by the fact that she made out with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

Angelina Jolie: Angie can be counted on for her edgy red carpet style, and she's embraced the risky tux look more than once: First at the Oscars in 2001 and again this year, when she wore a winter-white tux to the Berlin premiere of "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

Diane Keaton: Since making menswear hip in "Annie Hall," Diane has donned tuxes at many a formal occasion. She outdid all the men on the red carpet at the 2004 Oscars, where she wore tails, a waistcoat, a long tie, gloves, a watch chain and top hat.

Britney Spears: OK, in the video for "Me Against the Music," both Madonna and Brit are wearing suits, not tuxedos, but since we're not planning on doing this list again anytime soon, they might as well get a shout-out now for their gender-bending getups.

Marlene Dietrich: We're pretty sure all of the ladies above (or at least their stylists) owe some inspiration to this silver-screen sexpot, who sizzled in a top hat and tails in the 1930 film "Morocco."

Lady Gaga's concert at Terminal 5 in New York on Saturday was quite a spectacle. The "Poker Face" singer went through six costume changes, but three ensembles really stood out in our minds: She donned an outfit made entirely of plastic bubbles while playing on a piano filled with bubble-like balls; she also wore a yellow futuristic dress with pointy shoulder pads, and a Britney Spears "Toxic"-inspired flesh-tone leotard with a police hat.

During the show, Gaga gave a shout-out to her good friend Marc Jacobs. Marc wasn't in the building, but his presence was definitely felt: For Gaga's fifth outfit change, Jacobs created custom Louis Vuitton Graffiti leggings for her dancers, and Gaga rocked a pair of Louis Vuitton stilettos to match. One day we only hope to have friends that design for Louis Vuitton — clearly Lady Gaga is having the time of her life!

Not only can she pull off the craziest styles, but she's quite the performer too. She sounded great live and talked to the audience throughout the show, prompting the already-hyped crowd to go wild (one classic quote among many: "Do you know how many times I played clubs in this city and they threw beer at me? It was kind of fun"). The venue was packed with screaming and jumping Gaga fans, and we felt like sardines in there. In between fending off people pushing and shoving their way to get to the front (we even encountered a guy dressed up as a pig!), we couldn't help but look up to the VIP balconies in an effort to catch a glimpse of Gaga's A-list concertgoers.

And just who did we spy? Pop's queen bee herself, Madonna, and fashion designer Zac Posen were among the VIPs. We also caught a glimpse of '80s icon Cyndi Lauper, who like Lady Gaga was known for some flashy and bright outfits in her heyday. It also felt like two pop queens were passing the torch onto pop's newest princess ...

Right. No one. So you can only imagine how excited fans were about a rumor that Madge might show up at Brit's big Nassau Coliseum show later this month.

The rumor was started by someone claiming to be Britney's stylist. David Alexander spilled details of the supposed super secret duet to celebrity weekly In Touch. "She'll be singing with Madonna in New York. It will be 'Get Together' and 'Trouble.' So, together the song is called 'Lose Control,'" Alexander told the magazine, implying a mash-up of the singers' hits. The alleged stylist added that Madge might also join Britney for one of her L.A. shows in April. "It's supposed to be a surprise!"

Well, the only thing surprising here is that the rumor isn't true. A post on Britney's Web site debunked the whole thing: "Despite rumors otherwise, at the moment Britney has no plans to collaborate with anyone in the near future at any of her upcoming performances."

The post also addressed the source of the rumor: "PS — David Alexander is not Britney's stylist nor have we ever heard of him."

OK, so it's not true, but it didn't seem that crazy. Madge did stop by Brit's first Nassau Coliseum show on March 11. And let's not forget last fall when Brit made a surprise appearance at one of Madonna's shows. Despite the denial, we're still not ready to rule out the thought of the Material Girl returning the favor once again at the big show later this month.

Her name might not be Rio, but she sure danced like she was on a pile of sand.

Madonna took her Sticky & Sweet Tour down to Rio de Janiero on a rainy night last weekend, but her footing onstage was neither sticky nor sweet: Dressed in an outfit that might have been more age-appropriate for her 12-year-old daughter Lourdes, 50-year-old Madonna took a pretty awesome nosedive.

Rain on concert days is not Madonna's friend, as anyone who's seen "Truth or Dare" can attest. And after her spill here, she did her best to pass off the fall by writhing around on the stage. This, of course, only made things more awkward.

To make matters worse, it's not like she was performing a complicated dance maneuver: She was sort of dance-walking around in what appears to be sneakers.

So we've come up for some new performance rules for the Material Girl:

1) Knee-high socks, big white sunglasses and short shorts might be cute when Lourdes wears them, but that's not where you should be getting your fashion tips from!
2) If you fall, don't writhe around — it just makes matters worse, and we doubt anybody in the audience bought it for a second.
3) Sunglasses at night are never, ever a good idea. It's dark and we're already sure your vision isn't what it used to be ...

Follow these simple rules and you won't find any more blog posts about your onstage wipeouts!

Even if you've spent the past six months traveling with an actual circus, you are probably aware that Britney Spears' new album is called Circus and that it hits stores Tuesday.

You are probably also marginally aware that this is her big comeback record (again), and as such, she is back (or so say the legions of her disturbingly dedicated fans). Or that she is fierce and free and, of course, better than ever. And all of those things are fine and good and — to varying degrees — sort of true. But there is one thing you probably aren't aware of ... something shocking and, to be honest, sort of awful: Britney has started wearing a top hat in public. You know, just like a ringmaster. Because her album is called Circus. Get it?

Don't get us wrong, it's not like we don't love a good top hat or stovepipe or even an old-fashioned cylinder hat. Of course we do.

(Check out some of our favorite top hats throughout history here.)

It's just that ... well, we've been seeing a whole lot of them lately. On T-Pain (who reportedly owns something like 300 of them). On one-third of the Jonas Brothers. And, most recently — and prominently — atop the ageless dome of Madonna.

In fact, if you take a look at the photo attached to this blog, you'll notice that the similarities between Maddy and Brit Brit aren't just limited to their choice of headwear. On the left, we have Madonna, onstage this past weekend in Mexico City. Check the top hat, the see-through mesh top and black bra. Look at the black gloves, the hot pants, fishnets and black knee-length boots (ignore the "just-for-show" guitar). Now, look at the photo of Britney, taken Friday night at something called the Bambi Awards. Notice any similarities? We do. For starters, there's, um, like, every freaking last detail?!?!?

Surely, this cannot be a coincidence. One does not slip on a full-body stocking without just cause. One does not don a top hat just for the sake of it.

So we're asking the question: Is Britney totally biting Madonna's style? We want to know — chime in below.

Madonna has been a lot of things over the years: urban cowgirl, dancing queen, electro empress, pop priestess and ill-advised rapper.

But indie rocker? Madonna biographer Andrew Morton has found a 27-year-old tape of some of the singer's earliest recordings, chronicling the era when the future chameleonic media maven was a struggling dancer living in the basement of a Queens, New York, synagogue with brothers Ed and Dan Gilroy, the latter of whom was Madonna's boyfriend at the time.

The raw recordings are interspersed with some bizarre pillow talk and snippets of Madonna's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech in which she referred to that era. The tape features such tunes as "Born to Be a Dancer" and "Tell the Truth," a song she says is the first one she ever wrote, on which she plays guitar and drums.

The spare, acoustic "Tell the Truth" sounds like a Liz Phair outtake, while the other lo-fi, garage tunes might have fit in on an early Matador or Sub Pop album — if those labels had been around in 1981. But, for whatever reason, we know Madonna chose to go a way</ i> different direction with her sound.

Madonna. Is. My. Hero.

It almost sounds like a cliché nowadays. (What hasn't the lady done? Who hasn't she influenced?) I've truly admired her work since I was way too young to understand her not-so virginal floor grinding back in the early '80s. I distinctly remember asking my mom, "What's a virgin?" soon after. That didn't go over so well — my mother tried to turn off my MTV! However, given my current job, it's pretty clear that didn't do much good. I was hooked for life — cone halters or cowboy hats, Guy Ritchie or no Guy Ritchie.

The thought of meeting her brings warm and fuzzy images like angels strumming golden harps, rainbows and puppies to my head.

Ever since I joined MTV News back in February, I've been angling for such an encounter. But when I caught wind that Madonna would be attending the premiere of her directorial debut, "Filth and Wisdom," my lobbying kicked into high gear.

Whether the planets were in proper alignment or co-workers just wanted me to shut up, on Monday, I finally got my chance to meet Madonna.

There weren't exactly angels over my shoulder on the red carpet: It was more like photographers screaming at reporters, and cabs honking nearby. (If I had a dollar for every time someone yelled at Billy Bush to move his "fat head" ...) There we were, jammed in between the Associated Press and CNN in a 3-foot-wide steel cage.

Glamorous, huh?

That all changed when the Queen of Pop arrived. The flashbulbs started popping, the red carpet erupted into a fever pitch, guys yelled, "Madonna! Over here! Look this way! MADONNNNNNAAAH!!!"

I felt like screaming, too, because I was so excited! As Madonna glided down the red carpet even closer to our spot in the press line, a publicist told me we would have one question with her. One? Really? There's so much I wanted to say, and so much I wanted to ask. And then she arrived right in front of me.

While it may sound cheesy to some, this meant the world to me. Someday, I hope Madonna and I can meet again — perhaps sometime when I'm not getting my ribs jabbed with camera equipment on a red carpet!

Two flamboyant tours stopped in New York City last weekend: Madonna's Sticky & Sweet Tour and Of Montreal's latest stage show. Both artists share a flair for the dramatic, elevating their concerts to epic theatrical extravaganzas. But there's one major difference: ticket price. The best seats at MSG went for $350, while Of Montreal charged only $23 for general admission at Roseland Ballroom!

So any Madonna fans out there who are strapped for cash, here's why you can — and should! — check out Of Montreal's latest gigs and still get a Madgetastic show for a fraction of the price. Here's a breakdown of which show is better at what:

COSTUME CHANGES!
Madonna: Lots of black. Lots of top hats. Lots of shorts. Also, there's whatever this is.

Of Montreal: Frontman Kevin Barnes dresses like a cardinal! Then, he's a minotaur! He's in a bikini bottom! He's wearing a giant fanny pack! He's covered in fake blood! He's smothered in whipped cream! He's dressed like Prince! Shall I continue?

Advantage: Of Montreal. Half the fun of a Madonna concert is seeing what she's decked out in, but her latest wardrobe is a far cry from the Gaultier-designed Blonde Ambition garb. Stick with Of Montreal's wild and outrageous "WTF ARE THEY WEARING?!?" appeal.

DO THEY LIKE BBQ SAUCE?
Madonna: Madge's tour is called "Sticky & Sweet," thanks to a lyric in the set-opener "Candy Shop."

Of Montreal: Their show is literally sticky and sweet, thanks to a set piece I can only describe as "The Fruit Orgy."

Advantage: Tie. What's more disturbing? The thought of a 50-year-old's "love" being described as"sticky and sweet" — or the image of three scantily clad indie-rock backup dancers eating bananas and citrus in an erotic fashion?

INSPIRED BY "EQUUS"!
Madge: Madonna's previous Confessions Tour had the singer decked out in equestrian-inspired garb.

Of Montreal: Barnes sang "St. Exquisite's Confessions" on horseback. Real horseback. As in, he had an actual live horse on stage. And he sang while sitting on it.

Advantage: Of Montreal. Sorry PETA, but including a live white pony in the proceedings was a breathtaking, unforgettable touch.

McCAIN ON THE BRAIN!
Madonna: One video montage cut between John McCain and Adolf Hitler (dropped from the show on Saturday night).

Of Montreal: One video montage cut between John McCain, Paris Hilton crying in a cop car and Lindsay Lohan crying in handcuffs.

Advantage: Of Montreal. Madge's over-the-top comparison makes the singer look calculated and out of touch, where Of Montreal's McCain references are a sly wink to the Republicans nasty political ads against Barack Obama.

SELL-OUTS?
Madonna: Madonna's latest corporate tie-in involved hair-care products. Remind me again how "4 Minutes" is supposed to make me want to buy shampoo?

Of Montreal: Kevin Barnes (in)famously re-wrote the lyrics to "Wraith Pinned to the Mist (And Other Games)" to shill for Outback Steakhouse.

Advantage: Of Montreal. One gets the impression that Kevin is spending all of his Outback moolah on the band's stage show and increasingly experimental albums. The fans win, even if they now sometimes daydream about Bloomin' Onions while the band performs.

GET INTO THE GROOVE!
Madonna: The 50-year-old Material "Girl" ain't doing so much dancing these days, but its OK: She has backup dancers up the wazoo. Bonus points, however, for Double-Dutch jump roping during "Into the Groove."

Of Montreal: Kevin opened the show with a charmingly awkward sidestep and pogoed during a few numbers later on in the night, but he left most of the choreo to the professionals (dressed as ninjas, tigers and, uh, gold Buddhas).

Advantage: Of Montreal. As technically proficient and wonderful as Madonna's dance team was, there was undeniable charm in the rotating cast of modern dancers on Of Montreal's stage.

MESSING WITH CLASSICS!
Madonna: Madge reinterpreted her old hits in dizzying, exciting new ways. But the gypsy-punk influence on "La Isla Bonita" left a bitter taste in my mouth, only because I already saw her do that arrangement with Gogol Bordello at Live Earth last year.

Of Montreal: The band reinterpreted "That Outback Commercial Song" back to its original, awesome form. They also covered "Smells Like Teen Spirit," which left a bitter taste in my mouth since Kevin had just faked a suicide onstage (by hanging himself) a couple songs earlier.

Advantage: Madonna. Kudos to her ability to make the 900th time she's sung "Like a Prayer" seem fresh and new. And nobody should ever try "Smells Like Teen Spirit," particularly if they're a band known for cutesy antics.

CURRENT ALBUMS!
Madonna: The skeletal singer is promoting Hard Candy, where the Mother of Reinvention transforms into a desperate, confused pop relic, willing to jump into the lab with any current hitmaker.

Of Montreal: The group is promoting Skeletal Lamping, a concept album where frontman Kevin Barnes transforms into a desperate, gender-confused pop relic from the '70s, willing to jump into bed with any paying john.

Advantage: Of Montreal. Skeletal Lamping is a near-flawless record. Musically, conceptually and lyrically, it takes Of Montreal to bold and exciting new places. Sorry Madge, but Hard Candy felt like the musical equivalent of watching your mom sing a Katy Perry song.

FOUR ACTS!
Madonna: The "Sticky and Sweet" show is split into four distinct sections: Art Deco, "Old School" New York, gypsy party and futuristic Japanese rave.

Of Montreal: The latest tour illustrates the life, death and resurrection of Barnes' stage persona Georgie Fruit. And at one point there was a Western saloon setup.

Advantage: Of Montreal. The always-changing set pieces were ingenious representations of Barnes' elaborate lyrics. Madonna may have the budget, but Of Montreal has the soul. Barnes' hanging (and re-emergence in a coffin) is a visual I won't soon shake.

SPECIAL GUESTS!
Madonna: Chris Rock, Kelly Ripa and Jerry Seinfeld were all spotted in the audience at Saturday's Madison Square Garden gig. Kanye West and Britney Spears were among the superstars who appeared in specially produced video packages during the show. Pharrell Williams rocked out on stage for a few songs, too.

Of Montreal: Hmm...John Norris was there? And MGMT's Andrew VanWyngarden joined the band for that embarrassing Nirvana cover.

Advantage: Madonna. Jerry Seinfeld > John Norris. That is, until John becomes a zillionaire TV star thanks to his upcoming sitcom "I'm Not Kurt Loder!" (I've seen the pilot episode, folks, and it's a gut-busting, hilarious surefire hit.)

So there you have it. Yes, Madonna attracts the big A-listers (and is wise enough to let Kurt Cobain rest peacefully), but when it comes to bang for your buck, it's hard to beat Of Montreal's $23 ticket price.

The last time I saw Madonna, I was in eighth grade and she was gyrating on a bed. Well, when her Sticky & Sweet Tour hit New York's Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, the show was a little tamer — and by little, I mean a lot, but that doesn't mean there weren't a few surprises. Pharrell came out early in the show for "Beat Goes On" — of course, it's supposed to be Kanye West accompanying her for that song, but OK, I'll go with it.

Big stars like Madonna bring out the celebs not only onstage, but in the audience too: And there were Chris Rock and Kelly Ripa, front and center. Kelly seemed to enjoy the show a bit more than Chris, who looked like he was serving some kind of sentence just being there.

Toward the end of the show, Madonna made a reference to what the sound of Sarah Palin thinking might be like, and answered with loads of feedback and distortion from her guitar. (She reportedly threw condoms into the audience after saying "I'd like to express myself to Sarah Palin right now," but I didn't see that from my seats.) The "Get Stupid" video montage came on, and of course had many dramatic images of war and peace and shots of Barack Obama — notably absent were the much-publicized video references to John McCain being Hitler, but the last song, "Give It 2 Me," found Madonna and Pharrell onstage wearing Palin glasses and dancing up a storm.

But the show's strangest moment came toward the very end, when Madonna handed the mic to the very enthusiastic Kelly Ripa, who sang/ screamed into it from the front of the stage! "Give it 2 me! Yeah!"

To Kelly's credit, she didn't stop moving for the entire show (I kept checking on her through binoculars from my bird's-eye view up in the nosebleed seats). She's definitely a Madonna fan, although whether she shares the Queen of Pop's political views is anyone's guess.
