Last week, right before Republican presidential candidate John McCain introduced the world to his running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, in Dayton, Ohio, he strutted out to the sounds of Van Halen's "Right Now." A few hours later, Van Halen's publicist told MTV News that the POTUS hopeful was never granted permission to use the track, and had permission been sought, it would never have been granted.

Now, Heart are furious with the McCain campaign for its use of their 1977 hit "Barracuda" as Palin's unofficial theme song during the RNC. (When the governor was a high school basketball champ, her teammates nicknamed her "Sarah Barracuda.") Heart's reps fired off a statement saying they'd asked the Republicans to stop using the song, and in a phone call to EW.com, Nancy Wilson said she felt "completely f---ed over."

It seems McCain's people just can't find the right tunes. Considering how liberal most recording artists are, it's likely this will continue to be a problem for the GOP. Perhaps John should just stick with John Rich's "Raising McCain."

If you had to pick a song to capture the spirit of McCain's or Senator Barack Obama's campaign, which song would you go with? Tell us!

Like many Americans, artists such as Kenna, David Banner, Bun B and others are tuned in to the Republican National Convention tonight, watching John McCain officially accept his party's nomination as its candidate for president. Read their thoughts in real time throughout tonight's speech:

Kenna, 10:09 p.m. ET: McCain is a true patriot. Mad respect for his service. No one can question his courage. Most people would have serious PTSD from that imprisonment ... unable to function in society, let alone become a senator.

Bun B, 10:11 p.m. ET: The video intro is the same old military clips we've seen a million times. It doesn't impress anyone anymore. While I appreciate his service as well as all soldiers and veterans, when they shove his service record down my throat it keeps reminding me of the past. It's time to move forward, and these guys just seem stuck in the mud. LOL at "mama's boy"!

Kenna, 10:13 p.m. ET: His integrity is not in question.

Kenna, 10:15 p.m. ET: Weird, the narrator had a voice ... God-like ... Speak on his behalf ... So weird for an intro. The video stopped and the narrator didn't.

Bun B, 10:15 p.m. ET: As much as they criticized the Democrats for theatrics and pomp, the Republicans sure brought out the spotlight tonight! Seems he likes it as much as he claims Barack does. If he wanted to be closer to the people, he didn't need a stage jutting out in the middle of a crowd of delegates. Let the people in the show!

Kenna, 10:17 p.m. ET: I counted 45 thank yous.

Bun B, 10:17 p.m. ET: Guy holds up a sign saying "you can't win an occupation." The other side says "McCain voted against vets." They can't even fill up a room full of supporters.

Kenna, 10:19 p.m. ET: They should project something on that green screen. Like Hawaii...

Kenna, 10:20 p.m. ET: Yes! We are in the USA. Let the man speak!

Bun B, 10:21 p.m. ET: CNN shows GOP supporters in Times Square looking aloof and uninterested. If you can't get your own people excited, how do you plan to win people over. Even they are bored with their own convention.

Kenna, 10:25 p.m. ET: He was kind to respect Obama. They are both Americans.

Bun B, 10:25 p.m. ET: Someone snatches a female protester's flag. That goes to show you how open they are. They've been arresting and assaulting people for their opinion all week. Not just the mildly violent, but the vocal opposition as well.

Kenna, 10:26 p.m. ET: I am still wondering when he will start the speech.

Kenna, 10:27 p.m. ET: Nice Miss America wave there, Palin.

Kenna, 10:30 p.m. ET: Change is coming ... Sounds familiar ...

Bun B, 10:31 p.m. ET: He keeps saying he works for us. Which us? The us on the floor or us watching at home? I don't think it's us at home.

Kenna, 10:31 p.m. ET: Sometimes "Maverick" is a "Top Gun" reference.

Bun B, 10:32 p.m. ET: You voted for sending troops to Iraq when it wasn't popular and you expect an ovation? It's still not popular, buddy. And name-dropping Petreaus doesn't help. He's already trying to distance himself from this mess.

Kenna, 10:35 p.m. ET: His "I fought for more troops" statement cannot help him. I have friends that have had to go to a false war because of his vote for "more troops."

David Banner, 10:37 p.m. ET: Please, America do not get caught up in people's speeches or their party affiliation. Let our generation stick to the facts and what is happening now and what has happened in the past. Look at what people will do that will affect you, not what you see on TV.

Bun B, 10:37 p.m. ET: This sounds like a town hall meeting. He hasn't talked about any plans for this country. It's just been pats on the back. Let's talk turkey already!

David Banner, 10:42 p.m. ET: His play on words is clever. He said, "I will cut taxes where I can, and my opponent will raise them" -- so that doesn't mean he's going to cut taxes for the middle class, whereas Obama was very clear in his tax cuts for middle class workers and raising taxes for the wealthy.

Bun B, 10:42 p.m. ET: So doubling the child tax exemption and tax cuts will save the day?
Cutting the second highest business tax will help us? What about the highest? Or are you beholden to the boys on top? As if you really care about small business in America ...

Kenna, 10:43 p.m. ET: How do we pay for all that he is talking about? Fiscal responsibility comes with a price. A price we will all have to pay for because of Iraq.

Bun B, 10:44 p.m. ET: Education is not the civil rights issue of this century, it's the moral one.
Race is the civil rights issue of the century as it was the last. And schools don't shut down because of red tape, it's because of funding.

David Banner, 10:47 p.m. ET: McCain is not really being specific in his approach. He's talking a lot of bullet points but no real plans to any of the problems. He's talking about choices for school but how can a parent make a choice when the hierarchy of the school system has failed the middle and lower class from the top down.

Bun B, 10:47 p.m. ET: Oh so now it's foreign aid that's hurting America? Take $700 billion from that but let's keep funding the war? Please. And we don't need to drill everywhere we can. We must be open to new technology and new paths to power.

Kenna, 10:50 p.m. ET: Uh oh ... They're about to do it ... I can feel it ... So weird. Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill Drill

Bun B, 10:50 p.m. ET: Constantly saying Al-Qaeda doesn't make us jump anymore. If you're not concentrating efforts in Afghanistan or Pakistan, you're wasting money, time, and most of all our youth. You've wasted enough of each already.

David Banner, 10:51 p.m. ET: We need solutions. He is supposed to be a decorated soldier. Where is his plan to attack the problem? We know what's wrong -- we live it daily.

Bun B, 10:57 p.m. ET: This room does not look like America. It is no melting pot. It does not reflect the America of 2008. They look like the last of a dying breed.

Kenna, 10:59 p.m. ET: I guess I am wondering if being a hero makes you a great president.

David Banner, 10:59 p.m. ET: I know soldiers who have told me that they disagree with this war. But they are soldiers, so they fight. Soldiers are servicemen ... They don't question orders, they execute. He is too autocratic and a war-monger. This is not good. So Bush gave an order to go to war and like a great soldier McCain will follow. Will this be to our country's detriment?

Kenna, 11:05 p.m. ET: What has he said? What have you learned about his policy and how he will pay for it? What did he say? I am confused.

David Banner, 11:05 p.m. ET: I question what was the Vietnam War really about and what was America's place in that war ... Just as I question this war ... Does McCain have the balls too? Real people are dying for what? Just being a patriot is not enough.

Bun B, 11:08 p.m. ET: I didn't know you had to run for office if you weren't happy with government. I thought you could just vote them out. I wasn't moved the least bit tonight. I don't think these people understand us at all. They talk to today, but we are tomorrow. It's just the same ol' same ol' from these guys. The people in that room don't want change. They like the world just the way it is, which is sad. Time for change, people!

David Banner, 11:10 p.m. ET: I am disappointed. Our issues are NOT all war-related. A lot of us love our country too. War was about 20 percent of the talk. No substance, few specifics.
I really tried to be open and not allow my personal views to cut off my ability to listen, but this was a damn reality show like everything else in our society. No substance ...

David Banner, 11:12 p.m. ET: At least all of the candidates' children are having fun.

David Banner, 11:17 p.m. ET: We have to fight for our future. Eight years of spending and war. We need a change.

David Banner, 11:27 p.m. ET: McCain is singing of his glory and the glory of war. He should be honest and say that America should have pulled out of Vietnam then like we should pull out of Iraq now. We lost the war in Nam. Vets are still suffering today, the same is happening in Iraq. This war is about oil, not freedom. And American lives are still being lost on a lie ... Honesty should play a role in everything they do -- sending our military into harm's way included!

Don't miss out on the action: MTV News' Street Team '08 is on the ground at the Republican National Convention to sort through all the speeches, streamers and ceremony to find the information you need to choose our next president.

The list of artists playing shows in and around Minneapolis/St. Paul during next month's Republican National Convention (September 1-4) keeps growing.

We already told you that Rage Against the Machine will play the Target Center in Minneapolis on September 3 and that Rage guitarist Tom Morello will hook up with Steve Earle for a show in St. Paul on September 1.

Now comes word that the Morello/Earle gig in support of the Service Employees International Union's Labor Day Festival will also feature Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Billy Bragg and Earle's wife, singer Allison Moorer, as well as a possible appearance by former Democratic presidential hopeful Senator John Edwards. The "Take Back Labor Day" Festival will take place from noon to 7 p.m. at Harriet Island Regional Park, and organizers have hinted that other "special guests" will also be on hand.

In addition, Anti-Flag, Michael Franti, Dead Prez and Matisyahu have signed up to play a free show on September 2 on the State Capitol lawn, according to Minneapolis' Star Tribune. Nellie McKay is playing the Provention concert at Midway Stadium in St. Paul, as well as hometown favorites the Honeydogs, Cloud Cult and members of Semisonic.

It won't all be protest shows, though. In honor of the Republican gathering, former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar and country singer LeAnn Rimes have signed on to perform during the convention at private parties on First Avenue and Trocaderos in Minneapolis, respectively.

Additionally, Rage guitarist Tom Morello will hook up with fellow well-known lefty Steve Earle to play a gig on September 1 in St. Paul, the first night of the convention.
