Andy Whitfield

By Bryant Gilmore

When Andy Whitfield completed his first season on the hit show "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," he was understandably exhausted. He had undergone an extensive and strenuous training regimen to prepare for his role and filmed choreographed battle scenes for 12 to 14 hours a day. Reflecting upon this, Whitfield said, “I was exhausted by the end of the first season, but it was one of the most extreme things that I had gone through.”

The training and long days of filming were nothing compared to what Whitfield would face next as a visit to the doctor soon after revealed that he was suffering from the symptoms of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Whitfield immediately began treatment and was well enough to return for filming season two of "Spartacus" in September 2010, but after a check-up for insurance purposes, he was told that the cancer had returned and that without aggressive treatment, he would be dead within three to six months. This revelation forced Whitfield to drop out of the show that made him an international star and turn all of his focus on getting better.

While he took his doctor’s advice and adhered to more conventional means of treatment, Whitfield and his wife, Vashti, traveled to India to also explore alternative means of treatment. Throughout this journey, Whitfield and Vashti, with whom he had two children (a son, Jessie Red, and daughter, Indigo), documented every step that they took along the way and the footage has been turned into the new film "Be Here Now."

Film crews followed Whitfield and Vashti for more than a year and the couple also filmed themselves on their journey, until shortly before he died at age 39 in September 2011.

"Be Here Now" is based on the motto that the Whitfields adopted while undergoing this personal upheaval. The couple even went as far as to get matching tattoos of the phrase on their arms and Whitfield explained, "'Be Here Now' is about being in the present and not fearing what you don’t know."

To complete work on the film, the production team, led by Academy Award-nominated director Lilibet Foster, pieced together footage for a Kickstarter campaign video (which you can check out below) to give Whitfield's fans a taste of what to expect. It begins with a heartfelt plea from Whitfield’s good friend and 'Spartacus' co-star Jai Courtney, asking fans and friends to give what they can to not only help with the funding of the film, but help work toward a cure for cancer. As it stands today, the Kickstarter fund has swelled to over $181,000, just shy of the $200,000 goal they hope to reach by July 23.

Seemingly unstoppable British boy band One Direction have partnered with environmental group Greenpeace for their petition to the United Nations to make the Arctic Sea bed a sanctuary.

Because of environmental and climactic changes, the Arctic has experienced a fluctuation of changes over the years and according to Greenpeace’s official site, oil companies and other conglomerates are using this to their advantage to divide up what is left for exploration. But Greenpeace is ready for this to stop.“We’re not going to sit by while greedy companies and selfish politicians destroy this beautiful, fragile environment," the group says. "That’s why we are demanding that the uninhabited area around the North Pole be protected by the UN and calling for a ban on offshore oil drilling and unsustainable fishing in the Arctic.”

One Direction joins other celebs like Edward Norton, Emily Blunt, Woody Harrelson, Robert Redford, Sir Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, Radiohead, Penelope Cruz, Hugh Grant, Lucy Lawless and Rita Ora, who have added their names to a list that they hope will reach a million signatures to help Greenpeace in their quest.

Greenpeace will “place those names in an indestructible pod and take it to the Arctic. We’ll lower it through 4km of freezing water, planting your name on the bottom of the ocean at the top of the world. We’ll mark the spot with a Flag for the Future designed by the youth of the world.” Even One Directioner Liam James took to his Twitter and offered a heartfelt plea, “if you love polar bears like me then you need to look at this too.”

If you want to save polar bears like Liam, you can add your name to the list by visiting Greenpeace's website.

When they’re not dominating the charts or saving the planet, the boy banders are gearing up for a performance at the closing ceremonies at the London Olympics alongside another British blockbuster – Adele.

President Barack Obama has always had a way with young people, and when it comes to his re-election bid, the POTUS is turning to young Hollywood to make sure it stays that way.

The youth vote was key to the president's election in 2008. He captured two thirds of voters under the age of 30 last time around and wants to recapture the magic again, so the Commander in Chief invited 25 lucky stars to a private breakfast at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday (June 7) to discuss the Young America Effort, an initiative that encourages young people to vote.

Jeremy Renner, Ian Somerhalder, Dianna Agron and Zach Braff were among the stars to chat up Obama, whose well-known charm won over the famous crowd. After the meet-up, many of the famous faces in attendance took to Twitter to post anecdotes about their convos with Pres as well as plenty of pics, which you can check out below.

Today is the Day of Silence, a student-led national event that brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Students from middle school to college take a vow of silence to encourage administrators and their classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in their schools.

A 2009 survey by GLSEN found that nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and more than 30 percent have missed at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety. Two of the top three reasons students said their peers were bullied because of actual or perceived sexual orientation, and the point of Day of Silence is to use the power of silence to make anti-LGBT bullying, harassment and name-calling unacceptable in America’s schools.

Of course, the recent cyber bullying trial of former Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi, who was found guilty of hate crimes and invasion of privacy on March 16 for broadcasting a consensual sexual encounter between his roommate Tyler Clementi and another man leading to Clementi's suicide, sparked a national debate about LGBT bullying and how to most effective combat it. The Day of Silence is a way for LGBT advocates to take a stand without saying a word.

So if you are able, take the vow today and for more information on the Day of Silence, visit dayofsilence.org.

Lady gaga

Get ready to be amazed!

Three Ithaca College a cappella groups (Ithacappella, Premium Blend & IC VoiceStream) have teamed up with Pentatonix, winners of NBC's reality competition "The Sing-Off," to record an absolutely unbelievable version of Lady Gaga's empowerment anthem "Born this Way" for charity … and while you might think you hear synths and other instrumentation on the sample below, you'd be wrong, it's all a cappella. Listen:

The song is available on iTunes with the proceeds being equally divided between Gaga’s anti-bullying Born This Way Foundation and the NYC's Ali Forney Center, the nation's largest organization serving homeless LGBT youth.

Last summer, after making a series of anti-gay remarks at a comedy show in Nashville, "30 Rock" star Tracy Morgan visited the Ali Forney Center to speak with homeless LGBT youth about the issues we face, and later that same day, MTV News had the opportunity to talk to Carl Siciliano, the head of the Ali Forney Center, and Jayden, a homeless teen helped by the facility, about Morgan's visit and the difficulties gay teens face from bullies and unaccepting families.

Both Gaga's Born This Way Foundation and the Ali Forney Center are hard at work trying to make things better for LGBT youth. So listen to the amazing "BTW" cover above and if you are into it, check it out at iTunes to support a good cause.

In today’s world of music entertainment, it's often easy to associate musicians and bands with a genre, even if the artists like to mix it up every now and then. Kids These Days, a seven-member band of teenagers from Chicago, have defied my ability to do this.

Three of the band's members dropped by MTV News recently while in town for a show to give us a chance to understand what lies behind their unique jazz-meets-alternative rock-meets-funk-meets-soul-meets-hip-hop-meets-pop sound.

"Traphouse Rock" vocalist and keyboardist Macie Stewart specified. "That's what we call our music. We just started jamming in [guitarist] Liam's basement. I don't think we ever consciously said let's put this all together, jazz, soul, rock. I think it just kind of came through because that's what we listen to, that's what we're a part of, and that's what came out in our playing."

I found myself contemplating how this group of kids found themselves in a band together in the first place. The members include a trombone player, a rapper and both a male and female ready to take over the vocal load. Besides all being from Chicago, I wondered, what was the connection between these seemingly unconnected kids?

"A lot of us come from a jazz background," trumpet player Nico Segal explained, referring to a genre where improvisation and jamming sessions are considered the norm. "A lot of us come from Chicago-sponsored after school programs where we got to play music."

A big part of the band's "message," as Nico put it, is to keep the spirit behind such programs in Chicago (and the rest of the country). "A lot of arts programs are getting cut all over the United States," he cautioned. "Music is always the first thing to go in these schools that don't have what they need. That's a big part of Kids These Days is to stand up for that."

The Kids have played all over the country and opened for all kinds of bands, but their biggest highlight so far was playing Lollapalooza last August.

"We've got some really dope stuff coming up," assured the rapper of the band, Vic Mensa. "We're playing The Roots' Block Party in June. That's a dream come true for us."

If you're curious about the band's unique, almost collective approach to music, then check out the video for their latest single, "Summerscent," to see just how well they pull off their different sounds and talents when they come together as one.

Madonna

People have been buzzing over whether Madonna, a long-time LGBT rights ally (understatement?) and activist, would address the passage of a new law in St. Petersburg, Russia, that forbids the "promotion of homosexuality" by making discussion of the topic illegal in almost all instances and regardless of the context during her planned concert there in August. In an editorial, the New York Times encouraged Madonna to cancel the show entirely.

Well, she's not changing her concert plans, but she also doesn't plan to back down from the controversial legislation either.

"I will come to St. Petersburg to speak up for the gay community and to give strength and inspiration to anyone who is or feels oppressed," Madonna said in an email statement to Bloomberg. "I'm a freedom fighter."

The new rule, which is aimed at protecting minors from "the false perception that traditional and nontraditional relationships are socially equal," was signed into law on March 7 by St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko. Gay news blog Towleroad reports the law is far-reaching and essentially prohibits "participation in/organization of pride parades and gay rights protests, as well as the maintenance of a gay website, the donning of a gay pride pin, the sporting of a gay pride bumper sticker" and much more. The site also calls the legislation a "foggy, subjective law that can only be enforced selectively," meaning that without any explicit guidelines as to what constitutes "propaganda," law enforcement officials in socially conservative St. Petersburg essentially have free reign to bully LGBT citizens and allies under the broad umbrella of protecting the public from things they don't need to hear – you know, like how being gay is perfectly normal and how all people should be treated with equal respect.

The law has, understandably, drawn a great deal of criticism. "I don’t run away from adversity," Madonna told Bloomberg. "I will speak during my show about this ridiculous atrocity." Read More...

Ellen

Ugh.

The good-time girls from the conservative group One Million Moms are very upset that Ellen DeGeneres, beloved talk show host and least offensive person on the planet, is the new face of J.C. Penny. The group, a project of the American Family Association, which according to GLAAD has been designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, just doesn't know what to do with itself now that a lesbian, gasp, will represent their favorite mid-priced clothing purveyor.

"Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families," reads a statement on One Million Moms' website. "DeGeneres is not a true representation of the type of families that shop at their store. The majority of JC Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer shop there."

We're sure they will.

It's not really all that surprising that these kill joys are behind the anti-Ellen campaign. After all, they were clutching their pearls when Ben & Jerry's announced last year that they'd created a flavor called "Schweddy Ball," in honor of the famous "Saturday Night Live" skit featuring Alec Baldwin as Pete Schweddy, who makes up a fictional treat called "Schweddy Balls" for the ladies of the fictitious National Public Radio program "Delicious Dish."

Naturally, they tried to boycott the flavor. These people. Read on for more and to watch "SNL's" "Scweddy Balls" skit, you know, just because. Read More...

Michelle Obama might be turning 48 next week, but her Twitter presence is brand new. The First Lady joined Twitter today, and now that she'll be tweeting we thought it'd be fun to predict some hypothetical tweets we could possibly look forward to.

Before you get too excited though, you should know the account was launched by President Obama’s campaign for re-election, so many of the tweets won’t even be from her. You'll know when she tweets herself because they'll be signed with the letters “MO.”

It’s a bit disappointing that we won't get more of a personal account since Twitter cuts out the middle man, but who knows, maybe she’ll get into it soon. Remember when it was revealed she takes secret trips to Target or that she's not a fan of her daughters watching reality television ... there's no telling what could be a tweet.

Read on to see a few we thought up and add your own in the comments below! Read More...
