Deadmau5

By Zachary Swickey

DJ sensation deadmau5 recently took to his tumblr to rant against the rising frequency of musical collaborations. Despite this, a new deadmau5 track that features vocals by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has surfaced online.

The catchy new tune with a chugging digital bassline has just hit the Internet this morning under the name “Professional Griefers.” It has yet to be determined who is responsible for the track leaking online, as neither Way or deadmau5 have personally confirmed the track or even mentioned it. Although, a spokesperson for Way told NME that it is indeed his unmistakable voice on the song.

Strangely, this new tune appears the same week as deadmau5’s lengthy post rallying against musical collaborations that he labels as a “fad” of the big name music acts – especially given the rising popularity of the EDM scene.

“So, I've had a revelation these past couple of days, and I really feel the need to draw attention to the results here. There's a perfectly valid reason why I don't usually enjoy the idea of a 'collaboration' … although you can rest assure whatever collaborations I have done in the past were the results of stuff I'm totally into, like Flipside, the Foo’s, Cyprus Hill, etc.

All too often, there’s an influx of 'big names' that would get thrown around the label from time to time and of course, they fly off the table and out the f**kin' door faster than they hit my desk. eg. do you want to do a track with big name X, remix huge pop act y, etc etc.”

He then bluntly concluded, “No. I f**king don’t. I really REALLY don’t.”

Lest fans or non-fans begin thinking deadmau5 is just being difficult, he summarizes his thoughts more succinctly at the end of his post, writing, “The moral of the story is here, is that this is what songwriting should be about. Music is meant to provoke feeling and thought. So if we were to go by popular music, we should all be thinking how sexy we are and we know it, or how our hands should be constantly up in the air… or maybe we should drop that bass because it's too f**king heavy to lift or whatever the f**king problem with bass is these days.”

Kicking off Winter Music Conference 2012 in unique style, EDM enthusiasts ventured to LIV last night for Laidback Luke's superhero-themed "Super You and Me" party. You may be familiar with Luke’s long-running franchise that’s based on the idea of “saving civilization from mediocrity through music.” At the parties, club patrons are encouraged to dress as their favorite super hero, although last night some seemed to have dug deep into the Halloween archives for any random costume they could conjure up. Even bunnies, angels and demons bounced around to some highly energetic sets from Oliver Twizt, Zedd, Madeon and Luke, who headlined the show.

Zedd, sporting a superman costume, roused the crowd early in his set with his recent remix of Skrillex’s banger "Breaking a Sweat." The young German talent kept true to his signature style of filthy bass riffs throughout, including his originals “Shave It” and “Shotgun.” He also worked in a new mix of “Slam the Door” alongside Skrillex’s “Cinema,” appropriately titled "Don’t Slam the Cinema."

Immediately after Madeon took the stage, the mood shifted slightly in the room, but certainly not for the worse. It’s hard to put your finger on it, but young Maddy has a certain vibe that not only captures your attention but also makes you just want him to win. Watching his set is kind of like rooting for your little brother, only he has the ability to command the attention of everyone in the room and throw a damn fine party at that. The better half of his set was very true to many other electro-pop French producers, saving the heavier tracks to pass the torch to Luke. As perhaps a literal statement of goodbye, he closed with his rendition of “Take Me Out” by Franz Ferdinand.

After only a few seconds and a few words from his hype man, Laidback Luke took to the tables dressed in an orange soccer uniform and a green masquerade mask (what?!). No stranger to the scene, Luke rounded out the night strong with remixes of Sato Goldschlag’s "Mr. Mister" and Swedish House Mafia’s "Miami 2 Ibiza" as well as his hit single “Speak Up” feat. Wynter Gordon.

Whether dressed in costume or not, attendees will surely remember this high energy showcase as one of the best in the archives of "Super You and Me" history.

Did you show up in costume last night? Tell us about it and be sure to follow all of the action in Miami at MTV News.

After seeing Jack White team up with Insane Clown Posse for a release, it seems no studio collab is off the table, and now French digital duo Daft Punk is the latest act to draft a peculiar collaborator. The duo are set to hit the studio with Paul Williams, the man responsible for the Muppets classic “Rainbow Connection” as well as The Carpenters “We’ve Only Just Begun.”

While we wouldn’t be surprised to see Daft Punk sample those tunes, it is strange to hear the three are working together in a songwriting capacity. Following a screening of a documentary about him (“Paul Williams Still Alive”) at SXSW in Austin, the legendary 71-year-old songwriter talked to the Hollywood Reporter about working with the duo.

“I’ve been working with Daft Punk. I’ve written a couple of tunes on their next album,” he revealed. “I feel like I don’t want to talk about the stuff that I’m doing with them, because they want a press blackout on the album until it’s out.” (We’ve noticed, unfortunately.)

“So I should basically not be talking about it at all. But I just think they’re amazingly brilliant," Williams added." The way they explore the possibilities of sound. And I’m also totally attracted to the fact that they choose to do it anonymously. I think that’s fantastic.”

Apparently, Williams even claimed the album could drop as soon as June; however, Pitchfork has already dashed that dream – with Daft Punk telling them that June just ain’t gonna happen. Unfortunately, every cool Daft Punk-related rumor over the last few years has been bunk – like that “Tron Tour” that never happened.

With the exception of the "Tron: Legacy" soundtrack, it’s been seven years since we’ve had a proper release from Daft Punk – 2005’s Human After All. Given EDM’s skyrocketing rise in the last few years, you can expect the music world to go absolutely crazy when new music actually drops.

It's Miami Music Week, and you know what that means – all of the world’s best DJs coming together under the hot Florida sun to showcase their skills behind the decks.

But this year, many of your favorite spin masters are coming together for a little fun on behalf of a great cause. On Wednesday (March 21) at noon, teams comprised of top DJ talent representing the Netherlands and Sweden will showcase their skills on the soccer field to face off for charity and the fight against AIDS.

Dutch captain Tiësto leads his teammates Afrojack, Nicky Romero, Quintino, Sidney Samson, R3HAB, Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano against Swedish captain Sebastian Ingrosso and his teammates Alesso, Adrian Lux, Dada Life (both), AN21 and Otto Knows. The game will consist of two 30-minute periods with a ten minute break in between.

Each team will play in custom jerseys in the signature colors of their respective countries made especially for the event. At the end of the game each jersey will be signed by each player/world-famous DJ and auctioned by (RED) with all proceeds going to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa.

The game itself will be filmed, with highlights and interviews with the players going live on (RED)'s Youtube Channel next week. So even if you're not luck enough to make it to beautiful Miami for Music Week, you can at least check out the action from afar (and maybe start planning for next year).

Skrillex

Zachary Swickey

We were admittedly a little shocked last month when we discovered that dubstep king Skrillex (aka Sonny Moore) is dating British songbird Ellie Goulding – who seemed a tad innocent for the rambunctious producer – but it appears that Moore is quite taken.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, conducted just before he cleaned up at the Grammys with three wins, Skrillex talked about his budding relationship with the singer, which at the time wasn’t publicly unknown.
“She’s made me more secure,” he told the magazine. “It’s hard to explain, but I try to be less and do more.”

Well, that’s a pretty sweet thing to say about one’s new lady friend. When asked how long ago he met Goulding, he replied, “Months and months ago. I sent her an e-mail like, ‘I’m Skillex. I don’t know if you know who I am, but I love your s**t.’ We started texting and talking on the phone.”

“Just randomly, she was in New York, she flew out to Memphis for a couple days to see me," he continued. "We’re not a public thing, but I want to take her to the Grammys and have a seat for her.”

He even asked the interviewer, “What do you think about s**t like that? Is that cheesy?”

He eventually continued, “I love her. She’s my f**king girl. I definitely want to take her, but the red carpet can be weird.”

Moore seems to be quite taken with Goulding so it’s anyone’s guess why ended up not taking his new love to the awards show, but as Skrillex himself just pointed out, “The red carpet can be weird.”

It’s been a long strange trip for native New Yorkers Dominick Filopei and Bo Pericic – and a few years since the duo more commonly known as Filo & Peri implanted club staples like “Long Train Running” and “Anthem” into the sonic sound banks of dance music aficionados. Having pumped out flurry of tunes under Armin van Buuren’s Armada and Paul van Dyk’s Vandit records, the duo is a familiar name to those in the know. But throw in a few curve balls, a beastly music business and some admitted inexperience, the duo decided to step back, re-evaluate and more importantly recalibrate. Now, after two years, the reinvented duo is back on course with a new plan of attack, a killer new single and a mindset to live by – "The road to success is never a straight line.”

“When I look back at our near decade in this scene, I sometimes ask myself, were we victims of the politics of dancing? Or did we let the politics of dancing get the best of us? It's a hard question to answer,” Filopei told MTV News via email. “Over the last ten years, despite tons of twists and turns – we were two kids from the Bronx who managed to pull off some pretty lofty achievements. When I look back, the ride has been nothing short of amazing, crazy and testing. Stepping back for a minute has helped us see that much clearer. It helped us remember a time when making music was not about adhering to any one standard –it was about making the music that we felt best about. And that is exactly what we are taking forward. A leaner, meaner F&P—‘unfiltered beats direct from our heads to your ears’."

That mantra is really the mission statement that has put the Bronx beat bombers back on the map with their latest floor filler, “What You Came Here For,” which hit Beatport earlier this week.

“It personifies the new F&P simply!” says Pericic. “We had an idea, and we laid down some serious beats. It was exactly the way we wanted it [to be] and bam, the world now listens!” Read More...

New York, NY – If you've ever been to a Skrillex concert, you'll know that tickets can be hard to come by and there's a good chance your standards of personal space were replaced by fist pumping teens as you find yourself questioning the fire code in between sets. While EDM shows only continue to gain in popularity, many wonder, what led to the explosion of EDM music in the past year?

An event during Social Media Week in New York City ventured to guess. Held Thursday night in the East Village, "How Social Media Has Fueled the Explosive Growth of EDM in America Panel" included agents and label executives alike.

The notion being that music's discoverability is easier than ever before was at the forefront of the panel. The ease of learning and sharing your favorite songs has become instant and easy. And even if you're not listening to the same music as your real-life friends, a glance no further than your Twitter feed can make you feel like you're part of a bigger community with people of similar tastes and styles in music.

“The growth of EDM is intrinsically tied to social media,” Zev Norotsky, founder of Elektro Magazine and moderator of the panel, told the crowd of about 200. He also reminded the crowd, for anyone who had any doubt about its continued growth, that global EDM sales are projected at four times that of rock and roll music.

With artists like David Guetta having nearly four million Twitter followers, it's easy for them to connect with their fans and build a loyal following.

"Swedish House Mafia is at the forefront of fan loyalty and creating viral buzz through CD release events, and it's Masquerade Ball," Norotsky said.

Allowing fans to connect with artists in ways that used to only be possible when the artist came to your hometown has really fueled its growth, according to Justin Kleinfeld, who represents Tiesto and Swedish House Mafia. “It’s the autograph, these guys are tweeting everything they’re doing from getting on an airplane to recording a single … just about anything,” the rep said. “Getting retweeted is like the new autograph." Skrillex

By Zachary Swickey

It appears Sonny Moore, aka dubstep king Skrillex, has more than three fresh Grammys to be thankful for, as the producer is rumored to be dating British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding.

A source spoke with US Weekly claiming that the two musicians began dating back in November when they met through similar recording circles. While Goulding is UK-based, the 25-year-old has been spending much of her time in Los Angeles, where 24-year-old Skrillex currently resides.

“It’s a really cool new romance and they get along perfectly. They’re really good together. Everybody thinks it’s awesome. Both of them are so talented. It’s a great L.A. romance for her now that she hasn’t been in London,” the source claims.

The two may have initially met during recording sessions for Skrillex’s newest release Bangarang considering Goulding collaborated with the producer on the effort’s closing track, “Summit.”

For those unfamiliar with Goulding, she performed at Prince William and Kate’s wedding reception, if that gives you an idea of her target audience – a far cry from that of Skrillex’s, hence the unexpectedness of their romance.
