Ricky Gervais

Enough is enough. One of the big jokes at last night's Emmy Awards came at the expense of British "Office" star Ricky Gervais. Gervais was famously rough on some of Hollywood's biggest stars when he hosted this year's Golden Globes and has been getting shamed for it ever since.

Gervais introduced the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category with a pre-taped, heavily (and purposefully) edited segment that made light of the controversy that followed his Globes hosting gig – which reportedly got Gervais banned from hosting duties at the Globes indefinitely. Afterward, Emmy host Jane Lynch added, "Poor little Ricky Gervais. Someone didn't get enough hugs from mommy and somehow it's Hollywood's fault."

Jeez! Is it just us, or is all the hate Gervais has received since the Globes pretty ridiculous? Sure, his jokes were cutting, but at least they were funny (something Lynch and the Emmys mostly missed out on being), and the fact that Hollywood just can't move on only hits home that, as a community, Hollywood has no sense of humor about itself whatsoever.

This isn't a surprise, of course – Hollywood is notoriously thin-skinned – but it's also kind of exhausting because, well, nobody really cares that Ricky Gervais made fun of Robert Downey Jr. and Angelina Jolie nearly nine months ago. No one except awards show writers, that is, and they just will not let it go. Read More...

Kate Winslet

Last night, Kate Winslet won the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Made for Television Movie for her riveting turn in HBO's "Mildred Pierce." When the actress's name was called, she leapt out of her seat, jumped around, ran up and down the aisle hugging costar Evan Rachel Wood and director Todd Haynes ("Far From Heaven") and took the stage claiming she was certain that she and her acclaimed miniseries wouldn't win anything.

You'd think she'd never won anything before.

As usual, Winslet was adorable on stage, she was excited and seemed truly surprised by her win. But watching the deserving actress claim her prize, we couldn't help but think of another awards darling who takes home the gold just about every times she's nominated but just can't believe anyone would ever show her a little love. We're talking, of course, about Taylor Swift.

Somebody needs to get Kate the Great and Taylor a fainting couch, because they simply can't believe anyone would give them an award for anything – you know, despite the many, many awards they've taken home in the past. We're not mocking Winslet or Swift; both seem genuinely surprised (though, it's worth noting that Kate Winslet is quite the actress – that's why she picks up so much hardware) at all the praise, and even if some of the vapors the starlets conjure are for show, they are certainly thankful for the recognition. After the jump, check out some video of Swift being surprised every time her name is called. Read More...

TV's biggest night is almost here!

On Sunday night, the biggest stars in TV will gather at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre for the 2011 Emmy Awards. Music and movies are more our beat here in the MTV Newsroom, but just like everyone else, we love TV. So it's with great pleasure that we bring you our predictions for who will take home television's top honors at this year's show.

We decided we'd have a little fun with our guesses this year and asked our brothers (and sister!) in blogging to help us out so we could arrive at a Newsroom consensus for who we think will take home awards in the top categories. We also decided to bring you all into the fun with two polls – Best Comedy Series and Best Drama Series – to test your TV acumen. Check back Monday morning to see how you (and we) did!

Welcome MTV Movies Blog editor Josh Wigler, Hollywood Crush editor Amy Wilkinson and Multiplayer Blog editor Russ Frushtick to the conversation. They've made their picks and so have I, so let's check out the MTV Newsroom predictions for this year's Emmys and be sure to vote in our Emmy polls, after the jump! Read More...

'Mannequin'Watching last night's Emmy Awards telecast was a painful experience. When I wasn't wincing at the five hosts' "banter" or questioning my sobriety during a Josh Groban medley, I was rolling my eyes every time a Z-list presenter bitched about their bit being cut for time. (Hey, crazy old lady from "Desperate Housewives," nobody doubts that you can deliver a Bruce Vilanch punch line. Get over yourself!)

But nothing got my goat more than the Macy's ad, made up of movie and TV clips that took place in the iconic retail chain, that ran during the show. In the midst of "I Love Lucy" shout-outs and the obvious "Miracle at 34th Street" moment, there was a shot of Andrew McCarthy and Estelle Getty walking through a grand retail palace, "Baywatch" slo-mo style. (Thankfully, neither of them was in a red swimsuit.)

But the classic McCarthy/Getty collaboration was from the brilliant 1987 rom-com "Mannequin," a movie that took place at a fictional shop called "Prince and Company" and was shot in the Philadelphia department store, Wanamaker's! Read More...

Every time Emmy nominations are announced, you hear about the snubs. You know, who should have made the list but got cut instead. So we decided it was time to take control of the Emmy nods, which were announced earlier today (check out all the nominees here).

Not that we can actually take control, but we like to imagine we can. So if it were up to MTV News, who would be in the running? And what about loosening up some of the categories a bit and adding some extra awards? We polled ourselves, and here are our choices for the standard categories and some new ones:

Reality

We agree that "American Idol" and "Project Runway" are worthy, but what about "America's Best Dance Crew"? Or "The Paper"?

Best Reality Host: Mario Lopez ("America's Best Dance Crew"), Cat Deeley ("So You Think You Can Dance") and Tim Gunn ("Tim Gunn's Guide to Style")

Best WTF Moment in Reality: Spencer turns the apartment into a graffiti-covered arcade on "The Hills"; Tila Tequila is passed around in the hot tub by the final contestants' parents and stepparents; and Chris makes clothes out of human hair on "Project Runway"

Best Reality Fight: Dale vs. Lisa vs. Spike vs. Antonia vs. Jen on "Top Chef"

Least Necessary Comeback of a Reality Character: Janelle ("Real World: Hollywood")

Best Offscreen Performance By a Reality Star: Quinton "Rampage" Jackson ("Ultimate Fighter"). Two run-ins with police in 24 hours this week gave him a late surge at the polls, allowing him to overtake David Hasselhoff, Danny Bonaduce and both Coreys.
