Last week, "Gossip Girl" author Cecily von Ziegesar told MTV News that she didn't appreciate how the TV adaptation "ruined" her hard-edged character Vanessa.

"In the book, she's kick-ass and has a shaved head and wears lots of black ... and I think a lot of the readers who don't usually read teen fiction indentify with Vanessa," von Ziegesar told MTV News. "Even though I don't like Vanessa's character, it's nothing against [actress] Jessica [Szohr]. I just wish Vanessa was like she is in the books a bit more."

Cecily

Believe it or not, there was actually a time when "Gossip Girl" didn't exist. Crazy, right? Well, not for Cecily von Ziegesar, who created the book series when she was an editor at Alloy Entertainment.

She loves the show, despite finding one or two qualms, and admits that Chuck and his crazy sense of style make it easy for her to TiVo week after week.

Although she was a self-proclaimed nerd back in the day, opting for the classics over "Sweet Valley High," she did admit to MTV News her one literary guilty pleasure: "I guess secretly I was reading 'Flowers in the Attic' under the covers," she said. "I think that would have been an interesting TV show. Somebody should bring that back as a TV show." Read More...

Last night, I worked the press line at my first red-carpet premiere. It was for the movie "Sex Drive." It was really exciting; the stars were out in (thinned) droves, and the red carpet was actually a tasteful pattern of beiges!

"Sex Drive" is basically about a guy traveling a really far distance to interact physically (if you know what I mean) with a girl he met on the Internet. In a related story, I thought it would be really funny to ask all the red-carpet walkers what's the greatest length they've ever gone to get laid — and nobody agreed.

It's election season, so it's time to pick a side: Team Blair or Team Serena?

The way "Gossip Girl" has been heating up this season, there's a major power struggle between the Upper East Side's two queen bees. Serena appears to be on top at the moment, but for how long?

When we (very unscientifically) polled our newsroom staff about who should win in the end, Blair seemed to have the edge — even if the arguments make her out to be more worker bee than queen bee.

And then a surprising dark-horse candidate emerged ...

Spotted: Leighton Meester walking the runway and giving up her Stuart Weitzman platforms in Union Square today.

Nope, not a spoof of Monday night's episode of "Gossip Girl," in which Dan Humphrey gave up his shoes to Chuck Bass, and Serena van der Woodsen strutted the runway while a jealous Blair Waldorf tried to sabotage the backstage goings-on. This time, there were no last-minute shenanigans, though Meester kept her fingers crossed. "I hope that doesn't come back to me!"

On occasion, it's our job to crash movie and television sets, and today that occasion came our way. And as you fine readers may know, we here at MTV News love us some good gossip. So it was our pleasure to find that "Gossip Girl" was taping right in front of the MTV building.

And what we saw is juicy. We have a breaking "Gossip Girl" spoiler alert for all you fans. If you don't want to know what will happen in Serena's love life, do not read on!

Picture this: The newly single Serena van der Woodsen — clad in straight-legged pants, a cream-color blazer, a cute little blouse and sky-high platforms — is making her way through Times Square. Suddenly, she gets a text message from a mystery person. She laughs to herself. She looks up, and there she is on the mega-screen. She turns around, and there is what we surmise to be her new love interest: a shaggy-haired fellow named Aaron.

They exchange some words — and since we sneakily got a sort-of peek at the script, we know more or less what they were talking about. Aaron, played by John Patrick Amedori, tells her that she is beautiful and asks if she'll pose for him. (We're hoping he's a photographer. Otherwise, that would just be creepy!)

She says yes (we wonder what that photo shoot will be like), and then they — wait for it — make out! Take that, Dan Humphrey. We wonder how Dan is going to feel about his competition? Things are sure heating up for those "Gossip Girl" kids ...

The Teen Choice Awards aired on Monday night and America's reigning teen — Miley Cyrus, duh — was true to her overachieving self by not only hosting the show, but also performing her hit "7 Things" and winning three awards (for Choice TV Actress, Comedy; Choice TV Show, Comedy; and Choice Music Female Artist). Not bad!

Not surprisingly, high school was a pre-eminent theme of the night, as teen soap "Gossip Girl" walked away with six surfboards, including Choice TV Show, Drama and TV Breakout Show.

If you're just catching on to the existence of a new wave of French pop — made up of acts like Daft Punk, Justice, M83 and the Teenagers — you may have missed our earlier stories on these American-culture-loving musicians. Our resident Francophile John Norris talked to the filthy-mouthed Teenagers (while they noshed on hot dogs) on the set of "Gossip Girl" back in May. And in June, he talked to M83's Anthony Gonzalez about the influence John Hughes' '80s teen classics had on his heavily synthesized sound.

After the jump, find out why these hip Europeans are avoiding the path of Serg Gainsbourg and singing in our decidedly less-romantic tongue.

GossipGirl

Another installment on “Gossip Girl” from Rya, MTV News intern and former Upper East Sider:

Last night’s finale was so great, I can almost accept that I won’t see my favorite fictional friends for nigh on three months. A lot of things set this episode apart from all the others. Namely, that it was -- OMFG, I cannot believe I'm about to type this -- mostly accurate. That said! There were some glaring discrepancies that I’d be glad to share. Because, as we all know by now, for every handful of things on the show that are accurate, there are about 10 zillion more that are mostly wrong. My UES insider’s rundown, after the jump. Another installment on “Gossip Girl” from Rya, MTV News intern and former Upper East Sider:

Hi, guys. So, it's our second-to-last meeting. I feel like it's the last night of sleep-away camp, you know? I just want to stay up all night, and write on everybody's pillows, make out with the boy I had my eye on all summer (OK, that part never actually happened), and just revel in this really good, safe place. I don't want the morning to come, because in the morning (that's a metaphor for next Monday), it'll all be over (as in this season of “GG”). Anyway!

I guess we need to talk about last night’s episode, even though it was about as exciting as that song Lincoln Hawk (or whatever the name of Rufus's band was) played at that Rolling Stone 90's party. Let me just get that part out of the way right now, actually:

Lily, your young and wild days were spent photographing Hootie and the Blowfish Lite? Rufus's band (and the decade-old photo of him, which looked curiously like Pete Yorn) wasn't even ironically good/redeeming, and I'd rather be caught with a Kenny G cassette than anything of the Lincoln Hawk persuasion. That's the song that got you to re-evaluate your life with Bart Bass? Have you zero standards, Lil'?? And Rufus, I think I speak on behalf of the entire universe when I say WE GET IT. You are WITH IT. You can play more than three chords! Now put down that guitar, and find a new blonde to obsess over -- preferably one whose daughter isn't going all the way with your son.

But now for the weird stuff. Because for every handful of things on the show that are accurate, there are about 10 zillion more that are mostly wrong. My UES insider’s rundown, after the jump. Read More...
