This morning, the world continues to mourn the loss of Steve Jobs, the Apple co-founder and former CEO that pioneered computers with the Mac and iPad and revolutionized how we listen to music with iTunes and the iPod, who passed away yesterday at the age of 56 after a years-long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jobs' impact on the worlds of music, movies and computers was profound. He didn't just create new and better techie toys for us to enjoy, he fundamentally altered the way we communicate, how we work and the way we access and consume entertainment.

He was a private man, but one thing we do know for certain about Steve Jobs is that he loved music. So in his honor, let's take a look back at the invention that changed sound – the iPod. The iPod has become so engrained in our culture that I'm sure many people reading this can't even remember a time when they couldn't take their entire music library with them everywhere they went.

In the spirit of celebrating Jobs' genius and his contributions to music, here are some of our favorite iPod commercials.

We're all about artist iPhone apps in the Newsroom — from Lil Wayne's "Be Like Lil Wayne" app to the Fray's live-concert-streaming app, we love tracking the latest features designed to entice fans.

Music mogul and new-media king Sean "Diddy" Combs wants you to get onboard Last Train to Paris with a free iPhone app designed to build anticipation for the September 22 release of his new album.

Diddy's new app will aggregate all of his various social-networking profiles and bring news directly to his fans via his integrated Twitter feed, a feature (right now) that most artists don't provide. And, similar to Fall Out Boy's and the Fray's apps, "LTTP" allows fans to upload their favorite photos to a fan site through their iPhone. His twist on this now standard functionality is that instead of sharing concert photos of the artist, fans are asked to submit photos of themselves and their friends, particularly photos of their travels.

Selected content contributed by the Diddy community will be included on the final album's Mosaic app, which will be released this summer. Users will be able to get to know other Diddy fans by zooming in on and manipulating photos, while claiming their own piece of the LTTP album cover.

It may not have games or tour updates, but his "keep it simple" concept is a shrewd move. By crowd-sourcing fan content to populate his Mosiac album cover, he is creating a strong motivation for dedicated fans to get the next app and check out the album.

We'll let you know when the Diddy's Mosaic is released, and stay tuned for more iPhone app reviews and exclusives!

Lil Wayne's "Be Like Lil Wayne" app lets you customize your iPhone photos with grillz and other bling, then share with friends. On Fall Out Boy's app, you can follow them on tour via GPS. Pink wants you to challenge friends through multiplayer racing on "Fast and Furious: Pink Slip." And the Pussycat dolls want you to play their games on the go.

No longer a space reserved for the tech elite, artists are seeing the potential of iPhone apps and using them to develop an army of young fans who are increasingly mobile.

Nine Inch Nails, Snow Patrol, Justice, Moby and the Fray are just a few other artists who have jumped on the iPhone bandwagon, eager to maintain a connection with their tech-savvy audience. Despite the hefty price tags of iPhones and the iPod Touch (considering our bummer economy), more teens are rocking these slick mobile devices than ever before. Aware of this trend, artists are collaborating with iPhone developers to create branded apps with all the benefits of a MySpace page — without the restrictions of logging on to a computer.

With new apps in the works for Britney, Beyoncé and Akon, fans have the opportunity to connect with their favorite artists — and other fans — in a brand-new way, no matter where they are.

(Who else is releasing an iPhone app? Find out, after the jump!)

Some existing apps, such as FOB's, will continue to be updated with new features. Most of these apps will be bundled with album releases and tours, giving fans up-to-the-minute details and exclusive content directly to their phone.

For now, many apps share standard features such as blog feeds, track streaming and the ability to connect with other fans through GPS, but artists like T-Pain (who, in the next few months, is releasing an Auto-Tune app that will allow anyone to replicate his signature style through their iPhone) are standing out from the pack by providing fans with tools to create their own content.

Industry experts are speculating that iPhone apps will soon be harsh competition for MySpace, but ultimately it all means an increasingly interactive experience for fans.

We'll be giving you some exclusive looks into the latest iPhone apps before their release, so keep coming back for more updates! Which one of your favorite artists do you wish would release an iPhone app? What would you want it to do? Tell us in the comments!

I've been waiting since the first iPhone to own one. I even made the iPhone commercial-song ringtone to put on my normal phone! Having a drop in price made the deal sweeter. But would standing in line Friday morning secure me the next model?

My plan - To wake up at 5:30 a.m. and be on line at 7 a.m. Reality - I hit snooze three times. Eventually, I rolled out of bed and made it to the train.

I arrived in Times Square to find a line around the corner of the AT&T store. I specifically didn't go to an Apple store because I knew the wait would 20 times longer.

I was number 63 in a line of more than a hundred. Arriving at 7:30 and waiting till 10:30, I passed my time by talking to an avid partyer who got there before me. Right as I approached the line, he told me he was out all night and never went to sleep. The slur in his voice made me believe him.

After a couple of hours in the line, the standing was making a breakfast beer sound good. By the time I got the "Jesus phone," I was thanking God the wait was over.
