It’s a big day in the music world, especially for two of pop's biggest diva superstars!

The 2012 MTV Video Music Award nominations are out and they bring real-life friends Katy Perry and Rihanna together in the Best Female Video and Video of the Year categories. Perry is celebrating another Rihanna-affiliated achievement this morning as well: Her hit "Wide Awake" rises to #1 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart, tying her with Ri's record.

As Perry's latest smash moves from second place to the pole position – "Awake" is sitting pretty at #3 on the Hot 100 as well – she and Rihanna now have an amazing, record-setting nine pop chart-toppers apiece. They are followed by Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Pink, who each have seven #1s on the Pop Songs chart, and Beyonce and Mariah Carey, who have six chart leaders.

Looks like Katy and Rihanna have plenty to celebrate this morning! Rihanna and Drake lead the overall VMA nominations with five nods each, and Perry is close behind with four.

Kelly Clarkson

By James Dinh

Let’s face it, there’s a reason why Kelly Clarkson is our favorite "American Idol." In all honesty, the now-blonde (and looking better than ever) singer could probably sing the dictionary and make it sound good. The vocally talented Miss Independent even lets fans request songs she should perform during each of her summer concert tour dates.

During a concert Wednesday (July 25) in Concord, California, Clarkson channeled her inner Katy Perry and tackled her own version of "Wide Awake." As her band played a simple acoustic rendition of the pop mega-hit, the “Duets” judge was met with a roar of applause as she sung the tune’s opening line: “I’m wide awake.” Throwing in some delicate falsettos and signature riffs, Kelly scored a home run by stripping down the track while simultaneously adding even more emotion to the dreamy ballad.

Fan requests are a new tradition that Clarkson began on her solo tour earlier this year. Team KC can request which songs they'd like to see the pop star cover by tweeting the singer with their name, song title and the hashtag #KCrequests. Clarkson will remain busy for the rest of the summer as she’s scheduled to play Las Vegas on July 27 and work her way across the U.S. before heading down under to Australia and Europe later in the year.

What do you think? Did you enjoy Kelly’s take on “Wide Awake”? Sound off below.

Who better to be the face of Popchips than one of the biggest pop stars in the game, Katy Perry? The snack company has announced that Perry will be the newest face of Popchips and will appear in the brand’s advertising campaign this fall.

"I was hooked after my first bite!" Perry said in a press release. "When I discover something good, I want to share it with everyone I know, so I tweeted about it."

It wasn’t long before Popchips came calling. The sultry singer will also be investing in the company and will become a creative partner, joining the likes of other Popchips celeb investors Ashton Kutcher, David Ortiz and Diddy.

The new snack adds to Perry’s expanding empire, which also includes two fragrances, a partnership with video game company Ubisoft and even a producing credit on her recent 3-D documentary/concert film, “Katy Perry: Part of Me.”

Hopefully, Perry won’t have a snafu in her ad campaign like Kutcher, whose ad was criticized as racially insensitive because it featured the actor in brown face to play an Indian character, Raj, a Bollywood producer who was “looking for love.” It wasn’t long before the critical firestorm forced the company to promptly remove the ad from YouTube and Facebook.

A Popchips spokeswoman tried to explain the commercial, saying it was “created to provoke a few laughs and was never intended to stereotype or offend anyone." She continued that the company hopes "people can enjoy this in the spirit it was intended."

Pop star Katy Perry’s music is more sugar-coated than Madonna’s, but one thing the divas have in common is an affinity for unique bras in their touring wardrobe. Unfortunately for Perry, her blinged-out spinning peppermint bra has been deemed too dangerous by tour insurers.

The Sun reports that the costume, which got plenty of use on her "California Dreams" tour, is considered a hazard by insurers after an onstage mishap revealed it could injure her neck.

“My hair got caught in the wheels of my spinning peppermint bra and began to coil around and around,” Perry told The Sun. “I’m forced to just go with it so, by the end of the song, it looked quite like I was licking my own t**. What a girl does for her art."

We’re sure the men in the audience were quite thrilled with the spectacle, but the party-pooping insurance company is worried about dear Katy. “I keep being told the insurers are worried I will injure my neck,” Perry revealed. “I seriously doubt it could be lethal but they want a new bra designed that will not allow hair to be caught up."

“Well, I was always known at school as the over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder,” Perry joked.

A source defended the concerns of the insurance company, saying, “It may seem trivial but a simple pulled muscle can stop a performer like Katy from going on. Insurers don’t care about the art or the fun — just the dangers” … which admittedly makes sense.

Katy Perry has shattered records, got her own concert film and now the pop songstress is about to be the latest star immortalized in comic book form.

The "Part of Me" singer will get the (unauthorized) treatment from Bluewater Comic Books in “Fame: Katy Perry.” The graphic novel will tackle Perry’s upbringing as the daughter of two Christian pastors in addition to her struggles landing a record deal in Los Angeles.

Perry is by no means the first to get the comic book treatment courtesy of Bluewater. The company has animated many a celeb in their “Fame” series, including Betty White, Lady Gaga and Angelina Jolie. Although, not all artists were thrilled with the interpretations: the company received cease-and-desist letters concerning their Gaga and Justin Bieber issues.

The company quickly responded at the time, telling MTV News, “We are 100% within our First Amendment rights. We knew our rights on this before we jumped into the biography world. These are 100% biographies on their lives."

Here’s a quick look at some other interesting comic books from Bluewater’s “Fame” series. Read More...

Get More: Music News

Many fans have been curious about what pop star Katy Perry’s next record will sound like – especially considering her much-publicized divorce from comedian Russell Brand and the heavy recent single "Part of Me." Well, Perry herself will tell you: “real f**king dark.”

Talking to The Sun, the singer was rather blunt about her feelings toward her failed marriage, saying, “I’d like to use a time machine and go back to a specific date, please.” (Ouch!)

“My music is about to get real f**king dark. You'd never see my face because my hair would be in it,” she continued.

In other Perry news, the singer has yet to dive into the acting game (outside of cameos and voicing a Smurfette last year), but she’s revealed that she almost got a bit part in last year’s Academy Award-winning film “The Help.”

"There was a time when I was going to be involved in 'The Help' - just a small part, I wasn't going to be Emma Stone or anything - but I couldn't because the shooting schedule conflicted with the release of my record,” she lamented to Teen Vogue.

"And I was upset about that; I knew it was going to be an important film,” she continued.

Although, she didn’t get to appear in “The Help,” Perry has her very own 3D film coming out this summer (and no, it’s not “Piranha 3DD”), “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” which will be a documentary as well as a live concert film much in the vein of Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never."

"I wanted to show people this parade that surrounds me, I wanted them to see the engine. I wanted people to be able to experience the tour and all the joy it brought, which is why we shot it in 3D,” she said about the film.

“Katy Perry: Part of Me” is expected to hit the big screen this upcoming Fourth of July weekend.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry will grace the small screen once again with an upcoming guest appearance on Fox’s charming comedy "Raising Hope" on March 6.

In a show already filled with loveable and quirky comedy, we can only imagine that Katy’s guest role will up the ante. Claiming to be "Rikki," Sabrina’s (Shannon Woodward) best friend from a past life AND a prison guard, we hope the guest spot will provide many hilarious and informative flashbacks from Sabrina’s pre-Jimmy life.

Katy is no stranger to television, having appeared on "How I Met Your Mother" in 2011 and several other shows. Even in her stage performances and red carpet appearances, she generally tends to bring the theatrics, demanding attention and winning the crowd. We expect this performance to be no different. We are, however, excited to see the dynamic between Sabrina and Rikki since Sabrina often steals the show with her dry-but-adorable humor, which is exactly the edge we would imagine Katy Perry would give any character she plays.

At the end of the day, the more Katy the better – especially on an episode titled “Single White Female Role Model”! We have many questions: Did Rikki know Jimmy’s baby mama? Will Katy sport her blue hair?

Guess we will have to tune in and find out!

When Katy Perry wed Russell Brand in an elaborate ceremony at the Aman-i-Khas luxury resort in India, adjacent to the tiger sanctuary where he proposed, on October 23, 2010, they pulled out all the stops except one: they never signed a pre-nup.

So many wondered if Brand would go after what the law says is his – 50 percent of what she earned during their marriage. (That's the law, as crappy as it seems in cases like these.) In Perry's case, that'd be around $22 million, as Forbes reported that Perry earned approximately $44 million in 2011 from touring, album and singles sales and endorsement deals … far more than Brand earned for his star turn in "Arthur."

But sources tell People that Brand just isn't that kind of guy and won't pursue a penny from his famous former wifey. (We knew we liked him for some reason.)

Brand's lawyers reported filed finalized divorce papers asking for zero support from Perry on Tuesday. Their divorce will be finalized on June 30 following the mandatory six-month waiting period.

It’s fair to say that when you set aside the once-in-a-generation phenomenon that is Adele and 21, Katy Perry is pretty much the leading pop star in the world right now. One-and-a-half years after its release, the star is still breaking records left and right with Teenage Dream, as "The One That Got Away" became Katy’s 6th (!) single from the album to hit No. 1 on Pop Songs chart.

With the kind of unprecedented success that Katy has enjoyed with Teenage Dream, it’s an understatement to say that expectations are high for her next album. Can lightning strike twice? Will she be able to come up with pop nuggets as juicy as "Teenage Dream" or "Last Friday Night"?

Complicating things is Katy’s recent divorce from Russell Brand. Many a star has released a more mature, introspective album after a divorce – think, for example, Mariah Carey and her soulful masterpiece, “Butterfly” – so can we expect a darker sound and deeper lyrics for Katy’s third album?

It might sound like a stretch to imagine the girl who sang “Ur So Gay” and “I Kissed a Girl” coming up with something like, say, something like Alanis Morisette’s Jagged Little Pill, but remember that Katy actually has a gospel music background. Also, she once worked with producers The Matrix back in 2004 for what presumably would have been a more Avril-sounding album, so clearly, she’s able to do more than frothy pop.

Compounding the possibility that Katy will diversify her sound for her next album is the fact that she can no longer work with her long-time collaborator Dr. Luke (producer of “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot N Cold, and all the Teenage Dream singles), because the hitmaker signed a deal that ties him to working with Sony artists only, while Katy’s on EMI. This means that Katy would be compelled to seek out new producers, potentially venturing into new sonic arenas. Read More...

Katy Perry has always been the best sort of pop star cartoon and now she’s officially getting animated. The pop star has hooked up with Electronic Arts for what is being billed as an “extensive and exclusive creative collaboration" between her and The Sims.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that through multiple games (including March’s The Sims 3 Showtime) the singer will appear through content themed after her, including clothing, hairstyles, furniture and props. She’ll also appear in marketing and advertising campaigns for the games.

"I love how you're able to play out different stories through your Sims characters – giving them different careers and watching them succeed,” she said in a statement. “It's cool to see the Sims' stage performances in The Sims 3 Showtime decked out just like my California Dreams Tour – even my cotton candy video screens are in there! I always like to think of myself as a cartoon, and now I'm a Sim!"

Pop star/video game collabos are hardly new. Last year, Lady Gaga hooked up with FarmVille to launch her album, , giving fans exclusive content leading up to the album’s release. Read More...
