Kelly Clarkson

By Bryant Gilmore

Everyone knows by now that when you hit up a Kelly Clarkson show, it’s become a tradition for fans to tweet their requests for cover songs that they want the Grammy winner to perform at the show that night.

Recently, she gave us an amazing rendition of Katy Perry’s current chart-topper "Wide Awake" and now, she’s tackled No Doubt with an acoustic version of "Don’t Speak" – and for a few moments after she was finished, we couldn’t. Before she began, Clarkson took time to thank the lucky tweeter because "Don’t Speak" is “one of her favorite No Doubt songs.” She then effortlessly tackled the song with such raw emotion that we almost got confused as to whose song she was singing. Almost.

Check it out:

Clarkson is having quite a year. When she’s not killing it in concert, she’s slaying her fellow "American Idol" alums on the charts. Her song "Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)" was recently named the best-selling single by an "Idol" alum and spent three weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year.

But there's even more great news for Kelly. Last week, she received a 2012 MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Video With a Message for the video to "Dark Side," which is currently working its way up the charts. Make sure you tune in to see if Kelly walks away with her fourth Moonman when the VMAs air live on September 6 at 8 p.m.

Let’s face it, there’s a reason why Kelly Clarkson is our favorite "American Idol." In all honesty, the now-blonde (and looking better than ever) singer could probably sing the dictionary and make it sound good. The vocally talented Miss Independent even lets fans request songs she should perform during each of her summer concert tour dates.

During a concert Wednesday (July 25) in Concord, California, Clarkson channeled her inner Katy Perry and tackled her own version of "Wide Awake." As her band played a simple acoustic rendition of the pop mega-hit, the “Duets” judge was met with a roar of applause as she sung the tune’s opening line: “I’m wide awake.” Throwing in some delicate falsettos and signature riffs, Kelly scored a home run by stripping down the track while simultaneously adding even more emotion to the dreamy ballad.

Fan requests are a new tradition that Clarkson began on her solo tour earlier this year. Team KC can request which songs they'd like to see the pop star cover by tweeting the singer with their name, song title and the hashtag #KCrequests. Clarkson will remain busy for the rest of the summer as she’s scheduled to play Las Vegas on July 27 and work her way across the U.S. before heading down under to Australia and Europe later in the year.

What do you think? Did you enjoy Kelly’s take on “Wide Awake”? Sound off below.

We never get tired of staring at the homes of the rich and famous. Last week it was Mariah Carey's rotating beach palaces, and now it's "Stronger" diva Kelly Clarkson's Mansfield, Texas, ranch.

Clarkson is selling the four bedroom, six bathroom estate for a mere $1.495 million. It's a bargain, really, because you'll also be getting a gym, theater, man-made pond and lap and diving pools all on 14 fabulous acres just 25 minutes away from where the singer grew up.

Check it out:

The singer purchased the house in 2002 not long after she won "American Idol." The years since "Idol" have treated the down-home Clarkson pretty well … maybe she's looking for a real estate upgrade?

Kelly's recent #1 single "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" has the distinction of being the top-selling single ever by any "American Idol" contestant. She is also the second biggest-selling "Idol," after Carrie Underwood, in terms of cumulative album sales. The country star has sold 13.2 million copies of her four albums, while Clarkson has moved 11.65 million copies of her five records.

Clarkson and Underwood's individual sales, however, far exceed those of any other "Idol" contestant. Season five's Chris Daughtry and season two's Clay Aiken are the only other "Idol's" who can claim career sales of more than five million in the U.S.

Kelly Clarkson rocks out for Lucky magazine's first-ever music issue.

Ten years after being named the first-ever "American Idol," Clarkson's career is still white hot: earlier this year , her empowerment anthem "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" became a ubiquitous radio smash and her third #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, she is in the midst of a massive world tour and can currently be seen on ABC's hit singing competition "Duets."

Clarkson opened up to Lucky about her new boyfriend, turning 30 and her low-maintenance style. While the issue doesn't hit newsstands until July 10, you can get a preview of Clarkson's interview and a first look at her photo shoot and cover below.

How she celebrate her recent 30th birthday?

I just had my 30th birthday and we went turkey shooting. It’s what I wanted to do, so we went.

On being a pop star:

People act like there’s this one set of rules to follow to be a pop star, and I think, Well, you say I’m a pop star, so maybe that’s not true. … Even though I’m a pop singer, I really have more the life of a country singer.

You can add ABC to the list of stations attempting a vocal competition show. The new program, “Duets,” will premiere this summer and boasts Kelly Clarkson, Robin Thicke, Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles and living legend Lionel Richie as its judging panel.

We know what you’re thinking… seriously? Another singing reality show? However, to set themselves apart from the bunch – which now includes “American Idol,” “The Voice,” “The X Factor” and The CW’s upcoming “Star Next Door,” which has Queen Latifah and Gloria Estefan as judges – “Duets” will have the judges choosing two singers to be their duet partners each night. They will perform in front of a live studio audience each week on the show.

Of course, eventually one duet contestant will remain and the top prize is a coveted contract with Hollywood Records.

Clarkson said in a statement, "The simple fact that I get to go out and find two people that I believe in, sing with them every week, and help them accomplish their dream is an amazing thing that I can't wait to be a part of!"

The ratings for “American Idol” have been suffering more than ever, “The X Factor” has received lukewarm attention and “The Voice” is becoming the new favorite, so who knows what ABC is thinking getting into the singing reality show game. “America’s Got Talent” will also be returning this summer, and while not a predominantly singing competition, the addition of Howard Stern as guest judges is bound to give ratings one heck of a boost.

Be on the lookout for “Duets” to premiere on ABC sometime this summer.

It seems like Kelly Clarkson has caught the acting bug … again! You may remember a few years back that Kelly starred with “American Idol” runner-up Justin Guarini in the not-so well-received flick “From Justin to Kelly.” Now Kelly wants to get back into acting and wants to do it by making a cameo on her favorite television show, “Parks and Recreation.” A few weeks back, Kelly reached out to her fans via her website to help her get on the hit sitcom.

Here’s what she wrote:

“Here's the deal ... I really want to be on 'Parks and Recreation.' It's hilarious! I am a bad actress but maybe I could play a bad actress! I would nail that! I need to be in a scene with Ron Swanson. I love all of them but the trucker stache gets me every time. So, I'm gonna need all of my fans help please. Please tweet every member of the cast, the producers, the writers, security in that building, and anyone related to that show and tell them they need to have me on as a guest. Pretty pretty please!”

Kelly stopped by the MTV Newsroom recently and we just had to ask how the campaign has been going.

Kelly Clarkson has been robbed — musically, that is. Back in March, the original "American Idol" announced the delay of her fifth studio album, which we now know as Stronger, and ever since, fans have been patiently awaiting new material, official word and the smallest of tid bits on the pop star's looming musical comeback. Yet, they sure must have felt overwhelmed when a string of new Clarkson tracks hit the blogosphere earlier this summer.

While it may have appeased her hungry (and possibly starving) fans' appetites, Ms. Independent obviously wasn't too happy. "Oh my God, have you ever been robbed? I have. I’ve been physically robbed a couple of times, but this is much worse,” she recently told Entertainment Weekly. “There are songs out there that are from eight or 10 years ago … People are always asking me to write for other artists. They’re awesome songs, [but] they’re just not songs I would normally sing.”

Even though some of the tunes were intended for others, Clarkson had an issue with the public perception that some of leaked material might be the direction for her own album, saying, “I think what made me mad was that: 1) People stole from me, and 2): Everybody had no idea what my next album was going to sound like. That really caused a lot of confusion.”

Fans of the songstress should have no fear though, as the singer admits that a couple of the tracks that surfaced online will indeed appear on Stronger, dropping October 25. With exactly two weeks left until the LP's lead single, "Mr. Know It All," hits radio airwaves, the MTV Newsroom has decided to a look at some of our favorite leaked songs from the big-voiced singer (with hope that they make the final cut). Let's cut Kelly Clarkson some slack for the recently leaked possible lead single off her next album, "Let Me Down." It seems that everyone wants Clarkson to immediately delight us with "Since U Been Gone" right off the bat, and well, this song just isn't quite that song. Not that it's bad, it's just not spectacular either.

But a quick dive into Clarkson's singles history proves that a lot of the time her second single is the one that really wows us. Don't believe us, well here's the proof.

"Miss Independent" was the second single off Clarkson's debut album. Everyone was certainly Thankful for it, making her lead off that album, "A Moment Like This," a forgettable moment of pop schmaltz. "Miss Independent" defined Clarkson as the anti-pop star whose sass and flair for feminist pop certainly made her the star she is today.

As with Thankful, Kells dazzled us with the second single off Breakaway. After releasing the title track off that album, Kelly actually tickled our eardrums with "Since U Been Gone." Nearly seven years later, it stands as one of her defining tunes and a raucous girl power anthem.

Kelly Clarkson fans: Don't fret! Even though the "American Idol" alum isn't dropping her brand-new studio album until September, the singer/songwriter is already beginning to hype the project. Over the weekend, the powerhouse pop star announced via Facebook that she'll be releasing the LP's lead single in July.

And when that happens, the heat will be scorching, meaning only one thing: Summer will be upon us. Like every year, a select song is unanimously chosen by the public as the jam of the summer season.

Noticeably absent from the public, Clarkson may have just the right tune to get fans on their feet and rocking out. (Remember "Since U Been Gone" and "My Life Would Suck Without You"?) Even though no details regarding the singer's new song have surfaced, she's already facing some heavy competition for the coveted Summer Jam title. Peep our list of potential summer anthems of 2011:

Lady Gaga, "Edge of Glory"

After "Alejandro" snatched up MTV's Summer Jam title last year, Gaga has high chances of earning the title once again with her feel-good dance single "Edge of Glory." Inspired by her late grandfather, the pop star co-produced the Born This Way cut alongside DJ White Shadow and Fernando Garibay. "It's a bold move on her part to put this out there the way it is, where the full version is intact [on the radio]. When was the last time you heard a musical solo sax break in the middle of a song on the radio?" Garibay recently told MTV News.

Katy Perry, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"

Well, Fernando Garibay, to answer your question, Katy Perry's latest single "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" also features a saxophone break. Ruling the past year with back-to-back-to-back hits, Mrs. Russell Brand shows no signs of stopping with this catchy track about recalling a wild evening's string of antics. Plus, who doesn't love a cheerleading-like T-G-I-F chant?

Pitbull (featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer), "Give Me Everything"

In his quest to take over the dance floor (and collaborate with just about everybody under the sun), Pitbull teams up with Ne-Yo and Nayer for this club-ready track. As the second single from the rapper's Planet Pit, the tune is already creating waves with heavy rotation on both pop and urban radio.

Joe Jonas, "See No More"
Sure, the first taste of solo music from Joe Jonas has yet to see the light of day, but that will all change when he drops "See No More" on June 3. Co-written by himself and Chris Brown, the Brian Kennedy-produced song is the lead single off Joe's highly anticipated solo debut, which hits stores September 6. The singer recently told Rolling Stone magazine that he wanted to incorporate dance into the album, saying, "I wanted to make a record that a DJ would be attracted to. I love electronic European sounds that are just big."
