Lady Gaga

Listen, we’re just as surprised as you are!

Given all the hype, we thought Lady Gaga had this category hands down. We mean seriously, Mother Monster’s meat dress is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, for goodness sake. And she was in the lead here for a good bit of the polling period, but a late in the game push from Lil Kim’s side of the line helped the tiny MC take the Wildest MTV Video Music Award Outfit Ever crown in our Ultimate VMA Showdown.

Guess she really is the Queen Bee. (Not to be confused with Queen King B – that’s our girl Beyonce!)
Kim’s exposed her breast at the 1999 VMAs is obviously still turning heads over a decade later. Wearing just a pasty, the rapper famously presented alongside Diana Ross, who seemed both shocked and amused and gave Kim’s boob a lil feel. The crowd went wild and a VMA moment for the history books was born.

Kim’s pasty didn’t beat Gaga’s meat dress from last year’s awards by much – just eight percentage points (amounting to a little over 35,000 votes) separated the two. The only other famed ensemb to even really get in the game was Britney Spears’ sexy leather biker outfit from the 2002 awards. Brit grabbed 101,378 votes, taking 22.5 percent of the total. For a while, Spears and Gaga were in a bit of a heated contest for the top spot, but as votes started going Lil Kim’s way, Britney fell out of the race and will have to settle for third place. (She took the Wildest VMA Moment category with Madonna and Christina Aguilera for the kiss heard round the world, so we don’t think she’ll mind too much.)

Lady Gaga

One of the big mysteries surrounding Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards is just what in the holy hell will Lady Gaga wear. The Haus of Gaga stole the show with last year’s sweaty meat dress. In 2009, Lady G rocked a fluffy bird’s nest head wrap, a red lace Alexander McQueen show stopper and enough blood packets for a dozen horror movies.

When I snooped around the Nokia Theater yesterday, I spied a pile of burlap sacks next to Gaga’s assigned seat. While I doubt this is related to what Lady Gaga has planned for Sunday night’s show, it got me thinking about how fierce it would be if she actually showed up wearing a potato sack.

This seems like an awesome opportunity for some Twitter fun, so let’s get the hash-tag #GagasWearing up and running. Check out some of my examples…

“#GagasWearing A burlap sack???”

Or

“#GagasWearing a dress made out of Bette Midler’s ‘Beaches’ hair.”

Or

“#GagasWearing something Grace Jones rocked thirty years ago.”

The power’s now in your hands, Twitter-verse. Don’t let me down! Tweet using the hashtag #GagasWearing and my favorites will air on MTV this weekend.????

Just like Gaga herself, the crazier your tweets are, the more I'll love 'em. Plus, you’ll definitely want to follow me @jambajim for tons of VMA insider scoop and secrets. Read More...

Just about a year ago, Lady Gaga walked up to the podium at the 2010 Video Music Awards to accept her Video of the Year Moonman for "Bad Romance" from the one and only Cher. Not only was it an evening highlight because Mother Monster was decked in her meat dress when she gave fans a quick listen to her then-unheard "Born This Way," but also because the stage was graced by two of the biggest pop icons around. Fast-forward roughly a year later and it's been confirmed that the duo hit the studio together to duet on a song called "The Greatest Thing" for Cher's upcoming album.

While the collabo remains highly-anticipated, Little Monsters have already gotten a taste of the track as it's a song Gaga recorded a few years back, which ended up on the Internet. "I wrote that song a long time ago, and I've never put it on one of my own albums for, really, no particular reason," the pop star recently told MTV News. "I always write these concept records, and it just didn't fit in. But it's always been, like, this big, massive, beautiful hit record and everyone always says, 'Why don't you put that on your album?' And I said, 'I don't know, it just doesn't fit with everything else.'"

With "The Greatest Thing" now in Cher's hands, this marks just another Gaga-penned tune that has made its way to other artists. The duet is expected to be released in September, so in anticipation of its release, we here at the MTV Newsroom have decided to take a look back at some of the other songs that Gaga has passed along. Sure, Lady Gaga may have plenty of Grammy Awards, number one hits and a Weird Al parody to boot, but there is one pivotal milestone that she has yet to achieve – a voice appearance on Fox’s “The Simpsons." Well, that’s finally about to change – this week, Mother Monster recorded her lines for an episode titled “Lisa Goes Gaga” that is set to air next spring.

Gaga talked with Entertainment Weekly about how excited she was to be a part of the iconic show, saying, “I make music, but I don’t do voice-overs every day of the week, and their characters are so awesomely convincing and sincere and wild and funny, I had to remind myself constantly of the sincerity of the humor.”

Series creator Matt Groening had nothing but praise for Gaga. “Since the very beginning, I’ve always wanted to have the most iconic personalities of our time, and she’s it.” He continued, “It’s very hard to top reality with her, but I’m sure we’ll come up with something that is going to be as improbable as her usual wardrobe.”

If you aren’t aware how big a deal it is to appear on the classic animated show (currently in its astounding 23rd season), then take a gander at this list and see what other musicians have stopped by Springfield.

Paul McCartney
The living legend appeared alongside his wife Linda (three years before her death in 1998) in an episode appropriately titled “Lisa the Vegetarian.” It was the perfect vehicle for the Beatle – for those unaware, McCartney is a vegetarian and staunch animal rights activist. The star’s condition for appearing was that Lisa remain a vegetarian for the rest of the season, and the show obliged. (Seriously though, who would say no to Paul freaking McCartney?)

Britney Spears
At the peak of her early career, Spears appeared on the program in 2000 during the 11th season in an episode titled “The Mansion Family.” Her likeness – donning classic pigtails and a tube top – hosts the Springfield Pride Awards, and after awarding a character the title of “Oldest Man in Springfield,” the star accidently kills him with her “kiss of death” when she presents the award.

It was one of the most outrageous moments in MTV Video Music Awards history. Lady Gaga had already won a boat load of awards by the time the evening’s final prize for Video of the Year was handed out. So it was no surprise when Cher, looking unnaturally fit and fantastic at 63 in her “If I Could Turn Back Time” bodysuit, announced “Bad Romance” as the winner.

What was surprising, however, was Gaga’s outfit. As she ascended to the stage to claim her prize, the world finally got a clear look at the pop star’s third outfit of the evening … a dress made entirely of raw meat. But before she could take hold of the Moonman and give her acceptance speech, Gaga had to hand off her purse, which was also made of meat. “I never thought I’d be asking Cher to hold my meat purse,” Gaga said, and with that, a legendary VMA moment was born.

To celebrate this and other historic VMA moments, our friends at Buzzworthy decided to have a little fun. A team of impossibly creative funny people decided to reenact some of the most memorable VMA moments … using adorable little dogs as stand-ins for some of the world’s most famous musicians. Above, you’ll find the first of these – an homage to the meat purse-holding diva fun from last year’s awards.

On Friday night, Beyonce headlined the final of four sold-out dates at New York’s Roseland Ballroom. The intimate shows were by all accounts a huge hit, giving fans exactly what they wanted – a nice mix of old hits and new favorites (after running through tunes from her Destiny’s Child days, she moved on to her solo smashes before performing the entirety of her acclaimed new album, 4).

One fan who was in the audience Friday night has become something of a fixture at major pop events recently: Paul McCartney. The Beatle has revealed himself to be quite the fan of contemporary pop; in addition to Beyonce on Friday, McCartney was spotted getting down at Lady Gaga’s “Monster Ball” show at Madison Square Garden earlier this year (check out video of McCartney at Gaga’s show here).

Seems Macca likes pop divas almost as much as we do!

Fans of Lady Gaga are certainly used to seeing her decked out in a bikini – she frequently performs in two pieces in videos and in concert. More rare, however, is catching the oft-platformed superstar without her signature sky-high heels.

What fans might be even less used to seeing is Gaga catching a wave, in a bikini, without her shoes on. The star was spotted surfing, reportedly in Hawaii, and had this to say to fans who may be uncomfortable seeing Mother Monster out of her signature designer shoes: "yeah thats me. no heels baby."

(She also appears shoeless in her just-released “You and I” video.)

While we can't imagine Gaga going all Gidget on us and hanging with Moondoggie frequently, we're cool with her trying it out. And it seems she, surprisingly, is a pretty good surfer. In the above pic, she is certainly, as they say, hanging ten. Read More...

Lady Gaga’s fans got the experience of the lifetime on Thursday night when Mother Monster graced our Times Squares studio stage to reveal that she is opening the 2011 Video Music Awards. Yet what fans didn’t see was that Gaga herself was getting the experience of a lifetime as well.

During “MTV First: Lady Gaga,” I got the opportunity to floor produce MTV News’ own Sway Calloway, and part of the task was to talk to Gaga backstage to give her a brief rundown of what she could expect during the show. When Sway and I went backstage to meet Gaga (who was at the time wearing a Louis Vuitton bibbed top and hot pants) she quickly embraced Sway like old friends. I extended my hand to introduce myself, but she pulled me in for a hug as well. As she began speaking, I almost forgot that I was standing next to the biggest pop star in the world … it was just like listening to a normal New York girl.

As we went through the format of the show, Gaga was beyond thrilled that she was getting the “Total Request Live” moment that she never had the opportunity to experience. She told us that she used to call in to “TRL” to vote for Britney Spears’ “I'm a Slave 4 U” and often dreamt that one day her fans would shut down Times Square just to get a glimpse of her. So when she found out that thousands of fans (appropriately dressed in their favorite Gaga outfits) gathered outside, you could see the genuine excitement in her eyes and the realization that something she spent years dreaming about was finally coming true. Last night during “MTV First: Lady Gaga,” Mother Monster revealed in spectacular fashion that she will be opening this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Standing in front of the massive windows in MTV’s Times Square studio, Gaga said, “I have a really big announcement, but I thought as usual instead of me announcing I would have Little Monsters announce for me.” With those words, a banner unfurled in the massive crowd outside reading, “GAGA TO OPEN VMAS!!”

The crowd, both in-studio and in Times Square, went wild, of course, and we got to thinking about past VMA openers. Lady Gaga is known as a killer live performer – her Monster Ball tour grew into a phenomenon and her performances at the 2009 VMAs and this year’s Grammys are already legendary. Will hers be the most memorable VMA-opening performance ever? Let’s take a look back at some of the best opening acts to get some perspective. Read More...

Dreams came true for a bunch of Little Monsters tonight, as they got some face time with Lady Gaga during “MTV First: Lady Gaga.”

A handful of lucky fans got to join Gaga live at MTV's Times Square studio for the TV premiere of her latest video, "You and I." Looking radiant in a white dress, very large white hat and sunglasses, Gaga reveled in the adoration of her fans, offering hugs and handshakes as she made her way across the studio to the windows overlooking Times Square, where she was greeted by hundreds of screaming fans decked out in some of her best-known looks.

After the video, one especially lucky fan got to ask an on-air question (many more fans got a turn during the MTV.com live stream), and asked the pop star something that's been on our mind as well since first seeing the clip: "How do you have sex with a mermaid?"

"That's part of the metaphor - you can't," Gaga replied, explaining that "sometimes in love, you just can't make it work."

Gaga's fans in Times Square simply couldn't get enough of Mother Monster. “She's unique, she's special, she's crazy,” Gaga fan Danny told MTV News. Another fan, Anne Marie, is taken with Gaga’s strength, saying, “She fights for what she believes in and what she wants. She doesn’t back down for anybody.” Lil Monster Alex took it a step further, telling us that Gaga “freed my soul.”

Gaga explains the meaning of \"Yoü And I\" to Little Monsters in our studio.
