Gnarls Barkley
We started the third and final day of Lollapalooza with a toddler-friendly interview with Gnarls Barkley on the steps of the Kidzapalooza stage (in between sets from the Homemade Jamz Blues Band and the Jimmies, of course).

Cee-lo and Danger Mouse spoke about the mind-melting video for "Who's Gonna Save My Soul," and DM's upcoming projects (sorta ... "I've got stuff in the works, but nothing I wanna talk about," he mumbled), but what they really wanted to discuss was the set by they had just witnessed by the aforementioned Homemade Jamz.

In fact, they were so impressed that they brought 9-year-old drummer Taya Perry -- truly the finest mini kit-master in Tupelo, Mississippi -- onto the stage to take part in the interview. Because, after all, Gnarls loves the kids.

Kid Sister
It's been a long, long time since I danced in public. But if there was ever a time to bust out some of my solid gold moves, the final afternoon of Lollapalooza was it. The day dawned hot and steamy, and not just because of the sizzling heat. Chicago's own Kid Sister continued what appears to be a growing tradition on the South Stage (despite their sponsorship of the stage, AT&T's service has gotten half a bar from just about everyone I've spoken to, so I'm ignoring their naming rights), following in the heels of fellow Chi-town MC Lupe Fiasco, who killed on those boards on Saturday. (Sunday’s closer will feature the King of Chicago, Kanye West, taking what will now be known as the Home Stage.)

Sister, accompanied by three female dancers in futuristic football gear and face paint, sashayed across the stage in a flirty summer dress and got the crowd bouncing to summer jams like "Pro Nails," at one point bringing out a seven-piece crew of female backup dancers who were painted gold head-to-toe.

by Jared Piccone of innerpartysystem on Saturday, August 2nd

When you become a full fledged touring band, the things that used to move and excite you early on, like actually playing for a crowd, can unfortunately sometimes become a lower priority on the self-satisfaction scale. For instance, we've been on tour for quite some time now. Don't get me wrong, playing in front of a crowd that gives a s--t about your music is the ultimate rush, but when you start to do it day in and day out, you get numb to it sometimes. You need a refreshing experience. Something to remind you why you started doing this in the first place. That was Lollapalooza.

The Ting Tings
by Jules & Katie of The Ting Tings

We arrived in Chicago on Friday the 1st un-fresh from a St. Louis over-heated gig. Chicago was boiling too, but in the excitement of being at Lolla we drank & stayed up too late. On Saturday morning, the weather sympathized & turned down the dial 10 degrees, still sunny but with a cooler breeze... thankfully. Us Mancs not used to these blistering heat waves. Our main stage time of 12.45 midday was probably the earliest we've ever played to an audience & being a new band in the USA, we thought no one would get up from their spin head beds to make it on site till later in the afternoon. Shocked & amazed to see around 8-10k people turn out for us & then sing along, wave 'n dance. Playing to that enthusiastic crowd made our day! With the city panorama propping them up, has to be one of the festival highlights this year, no doubt!

Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis), the copyright-busting mastermind behind this year's Feed The Animals album, is a totally sweet dude who loves a good party as much as the next guy. So when we boarded a golf cart with him for a victory lap around the Lolla grounds, he was more than ready to seek out his fellow ragers.

And boy, did he find them. Over the course of one 15-minute trek, he pointed out dudes (allegedly) on a galaxy of mind-altering (not that we'd know). Plus, he got hounded by a lone paparazzo. But he didn’t accomplish his main goal: seeing some boobs and butts.

All hope isn't lost, though. Gillis was more than optimistic that he'd see plenty of both during his Sunday evening set. A man can dream, can't he?

Lolla fashion
A wholly unscientific study of what's covering the tops of Lollapalooza-goers...

Generally more vintage tees, less tie dye and headbands (sorry MGMT), way less day glo shades than in NYC. Here's what else is out there.

This is what I love about Lollapalooza: the somewhat obscure Texas psychedelic rock band Explosions in the Sky (three guitarists and a drummer) played one of the main stages on Saturday around 4:30 p.m., the very same stage where Wilco would close the house hours later. And they were good. Really trippy.

(For photos of Explosions in the Sky and more of today's artists, check out Gil's Lolla photo diary).

Two of the guys sat down Indian style for a couple of songs and seemed like they were in a trance staring at their pedals and the thousands in the audience gave them more than polite applause. Hell, I've hardly heard of these guys and know them only by reputation.

cargo shorts
A wholly unscientific study of the bottom half of Lollapalooza fans:

60% = cargo shorts (sorry hipsters, they’re not going away)

20% = vintage/thrift store shorts

15% = skinny hipster shorts

5% = 1970s NBA-style short shorts (Dr. J would be proud)

.000000000001% - a kilt

Check out what Lollapalooza-goers are wearing from the waist up.

MGMT and MTV News' James MontgomeryI had heard the stories — you don’t wanna interview MGMT, they’re sorta jerks, they’ll cackle at your questions, ice you with their hipster glares. So, understandably, when I was penciled in to talk with guys backstage at Lollapalooza, I was a little on edge.

But, as it turns out, those stories couldn’t be further from the truth. The duo — Andrew vanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser — have certainly made the festival rounds this summer, and they’d heard all manner of stupid questions, but they were actually super nice, in a sort of glazed, Haight Ashbury kind of
way.

TMZ-land officially arrived at Lollapalooza Saturday afternoon – and you have Mr. Lolla himself, Perry Farrell to thank for it.

Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson backstage at Lollapalooza on Saturday
A mid-afternoon set at the dance tent Perry’s by Farrell and a “special guest” took on a whole different meaning when that guest was revealed to be none other than Samantha Ronson, accompanied to the endless fascination of all, by her ubiquitous gal pal, Lindsay Lohan. When we arrived to an already packed dance tent, were escorted into a predictably cluster f--- of a backstage area, under a searing afternoon sun, and got even more of a celeb eyefull than we were expecting. There was Perry on stage, in a glittery black and white number, spinning and pumping up the crowd for his ‘guest DJ.’ There was LiLo, hanging with a friend and trying not to pay attention to the fact that everyone in the area was looking at her. There was Samantha, waiting to go on. And then there was the even better known member of the Ronson family, DJ and uber producer brother Mark, an attention magnet himself. And to throw a certifiable rock god into the mix, there was the man himself, Slash -- yet another surprise guest for Perry to spring on the crowd.

Soon it was showtime for Sam – decked out in an Average White Band t-shirt and a fedora, she spun a 15 minute set heavy on “upbeat” tunes at Perry’s request, she told me, and with a healthy dose of ‘80’s. “Yeah, so I included some Foreigner,” she said, “some Depeche Mode, some Hot Chip. I tried to mix it up.

“I’m just psyched to see Slash,” Sam said of first Lolla experience, “Perry and Slash, I’ve never been to Lollapalooza, and after this I don’t think I need to go to another.” Samantha’s in and out of Chicago – she has to be back in LA tonight – but Mark is hanging all weekend, checking out a ton of favorites -- from Black Keys and Radiohead yesterday to Rage tonight -- and then playing his own set tomorrow night, on one of the festival’s biggest stages.
