Friends with Benefits

From Hollywood Crush:

By Katie Calautti

If you thought director Will Gluck’s raucous dark comedy Easy A packed a hilarious one-two punch of dirty jokes and jaw-dropping sexual innuendo (not to mention a heckuva good-looking romantic duo —we’re talking to you, Emma Stone and Penn Badgley), brace yourself for Will’s ante-upping contender Friends With Benefits.

The casting of the movie’s protagonists—Dylan (Justin Timberlake) and Jamie (Mila Kunis)—is as juicy as its premise. Namely: two pals who fashion a pact to hit the sack sans emotional involvement.

We’re willing to bet that hilarity ensues, but before the film hits theaters Friday, July 22, we decided to do a little digging. Is an IRL relationship like the one showcased in Friends With Benefits actually possible? If so, how? And what exactly are the complications? We chatted with clinical psychologist Elizabeth Bowman, PhD, to get the skinny.

Is it possible to have a successful friends with benefits relationship? Read on to find out. Read More...

George Harrison

By Zachary Swickey

Beatles fans have something to get excited about! It appears legendary director Martin Scorsese is finally ready to reveal his much anticipated documentary on the group’s late guitarist, George Harrison.

A posting on the Harrison’s website states the special will air on HBO over the nights of October 5 and 6 later this year. The project is much more than just a film documentary. Dubbed George Harrison: Living in the Material World, it is a collaboration with the guitarist’s widow, Olivia, that also includes a coffee table book she organized, which is due in September. The set will reportedly trace the guitarist’s life through rare photographs, old home videos and plenty of unreleased live footage. Also included will be interviews with Harrison’s old chums: Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, director Terry Gilliam, producer Phil Spector, Yoko Ono and of course the two living Beatles, good ole’ Paul and Ringo.

“Spending time with Olivia, interviewing so many of George’s closest friends, reviewing all of that footage, some of it never seen before, and listening to all of the magnificent music – it was a joy, and an experience I’ll always treasure,” Scorsese said in a statement.

Movie premieres may look glamorous, but it's hard for things to stay that way when it's 90+ degrees outside. Yesterday was the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 at Lincoln Center in New York City, and I got to experience the madness first hand. I joined the several producers who made this an extremely successful live-stream event.

Amid the excitement and anticipation, everyone, including the celebrities, was feeling the heat. "I'm sweating like a pig in labor!" Daniel Radcliffe exclaimed.

Everyone important to the production was present at the film's US premiere. Chris Columbus, director of the first two Potter films, stopped by to speak with MTV News about the cast throughout the years and the sweltering heat, as did producer David Heyman, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and other major cast members.

I arrived at Lincoln Center around 2:30PM with the crew to set up shop on the red carpet and to prepare for all the interviews coming our way. Thankfully, I also spotted a Bed, Bath, and Beyond across the street.

Now that's where the real magic happens.

Working behind the scenes at a red carpet premiere is no easy task, but here are some items you may want to purchase to make the experience as comfortable as possible if you ever find yourself in this type of situation. Read More...

Harry Potter

From Hollywood Crush:

This weekend, the final installment of the Harry Potter franchise hits theaters, marking the end of an era for millions around the world who grew up with the brave boy wizard. The series handles some weighty issues, such as good versus evil and the nature of death, but Dumbledore constantly reminds Harry that the greatest magic of all is love. The professor correctly hypothesizes that Voldemort can never win, since he is incapable of this most human emotion.

In honor of the magical power of love, our friends at Hollywood Crush are taking a look back at some of our favorite couples from the Harry Potter series.

Ron and Hermione

Though Ron and Hermione got off to a rocky start, they became fast friends and, throughout their years at Hogwarts and beyond, a little something more. One of the film series’ most highly anticipated moments still awaits us: Ron and Hermione’s kiss! If it’s anything like the passionate embrace that Horcrux Harry and Hermione shared in Deathly Hallows: Part 1, then we won’t be disappointed. "I ended up pouncing on Rupert [Grint]," Emma Watson told us about filming the scene. "After the first take he was like, 'Whoa there! Where did that come from?' I was like, 'Sorry!'"

Johnny Depp

By Zachary Swickey

Imagine drinking a beer, waxing nostalgic at an Alice Cooper show and then seeing Captain Jack Sparrow, better known as Johnny Depp, waltz onstage for a song or two. Well, that’s exactly what happened this past weekend at the intimate 100 Club in London.

If you’re wondering how these two souls came together, we assume they are old pals from their time together on the set of 1991’s Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, the sixth installment of the Freddy Krueger franchise.

Some of the crowd already knew what they were in store for, after Cooper posted a backstage pic on Facebook of Depp preparing to take the stage with guitar in hand. “Johny Depp!! Waiting to jump onstage with Alice for ‘18’ and ‘School’s Out,’” he wrote.

No slouch when it comes to music, Depp was a member of P, which included Gibby Haynes of Butthole Surfers fame, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sex Pistols’ guitarist Steve Jones. P was known to play the Viper Room in the early 1990s when Depp was still a partial owner of the famous venue. He also did some slide guitar work on the Oasis tune “Fade In-Out” from their ‘97 album Be Here Now.
A man of his word, Depp showed off his impressive guitar prowess with Alice and his gang for the promised tunes and a portion of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall,” which inevitably led into the anthemic “School’s Out.”

You’re bound to have a celeb sighting if you happen to catch some of the must-see shows rolling through bigger cities this summer. From Jason Segel to Sandra Bullock, here are a few examples of celebs crashing the stage. Read More...

When your job involves working at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards and helping usher celebs like Kristen Stewart, Emma Watson and more to the red carpet, you really can't complain. Thanks to my gig this year, not only did I get to see some of my favorite stars from a special behind-the-scenes vantage point, I also got to make some observations that I wouldn't have otherwise made. Usually I'd tweet my thoughts, but in this case, there were just so many special moments that I had to list them in a blog. So check out some of my favorite behind-the-scenes moments with your favorite stars and let me know what you thought of this year's red carpet.

(Check out photos of Kristen Stewart and her "Twilight" costars at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards.)

Kristen Stewart: KStew's arrival was one of the most anticipated of the night, and it was well worth the wait. Kristen arrived toward the end of the red carpet, and she was quickly directed to the paparazzi line. While the whole thing was kind of a blur (there were a lot of people surrounding her!), I'm convinced she turned around to give me a gracious smile since I helped usher her forward. I could be totally wrong (there were countless other people she could have been smiling at), but I'm keeping this one for myself. So just let me have it, k?

Taylor Lautner: OK, gals, I'm officially a Taylor fan. I mean, I always thought he was a good-looking guy, but today, when he was on the MTV News platform next to Josh Horowitz, in his razor-sharp silver suit and perfect hair, I realized just how good-looking he was. Also, he's super-fun. Right after getting in line for photos, I saw him approach a photographer he recognized to give him a playful greeting. How could you not love a guy who's so down-to-earth? After winning an Oscar and Golden Globe for their first foray into film scoring — David Fincher's "The Social Network" — it's safe to say that Trent Reznor and his digital partner, Atticus Ross, have found a new calling. It's a no-brainer that Fincher called upon their services once again to score his upcoming film adaptation of the Swedish crime/mystery series, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." While the first film of the trilogy is not due until December 21, a bootleg of the trailer has leaked and contains quite the surprising audio accompaniment.

Pounding over the stark images of Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara as Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander is a synth-heavy cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" with none other than the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' frontwoman Karen O giving her best "ah-ha" wail to kick off the song. The guitar mastery of Jimmy Page and drum pillaging of John Bonham have been replaced with an eerie, marching electronic beat that has us longing for new Nine Inch Nails material. The dirty, distorted vocals are perfectly matched with the bleak scenes of the trailer, and will undoubtedly make your skin scrawl. The short clip (1:39 min) is already boasting 1.4 million hits on YouTube, and it's hard to say what fans are more excited about — the music or the film?

Reznor has already taken to his Twitter account and posted that he is "blown away" by the positive response he's received from fans. Of course, the purpose of a trailer is to make you want to see a film, but the musical element can increase said desire by adding a certain emotional depth. Here are some trailers that hold well on their own, but become exponentially more awesome by being paired with songs that fit quite aptly.

M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" in the "Pineapple Express" trailer:
The line "sticks and stones and weed and bombs" may be the sole reason that "Paper Planes" is even used in the trailer for the smoke-tastic "Pineapple Express," but it's a good thing they chose it. The song has a laid-back vibe but features violent lyrics and sampling of gunshots, which matches the "Is it an action or comedy?" vibe of the film itself.

Sometimes the singer/actress hyphenate can come off as a bit forced. This is not the case, however, for legitimate singer and actress Schuyler Fisk, who recently released her sophomore album Blue Ribbon Winner AND has a film opening at the Cannes Film Festival called "Restless."

MTV News caught up with her recently to discuss what inspired her new music and what we can expect from "Restless," directed by Gus Van Sant. Also, we learned that she'd secretly love to be in an action movie someday — leather catsuit, crazy stunts and all.

Speaking to Blue Ribbon Winner, Fisk revealed that a lot of the music was written mainly on a farm in her home state of Virginia.

"It was a blast. I had a ton of my musician friends come stay on the farm where I grew up. We had such a good time," Fisk said. "It was weird that we were working because it was playing music every day on the farm with goats and chickens running around. It was great."

One track, however, was inspired by her work on Van Sant's "Restless."

"I was so inspired," she said of her time shooting the film. "There was a very creative vibe on set, very creative vibe in Portland where we filmed. 'Waterbird' was inspired by the film," she said.

In "Restless," Fisk plays the older sister of Mia Wasikowska. It's a film that she described as having "a beautiful story, and all the characters are beautifully flawed."

"I think it has that kind of slice-of-life feel, like, these people could be real, but at the same time there's another side to it as well," she teased. "It's definitely a serious film, but there is light. For me, it makes you look at life differently and seeing it in this beautiful way. It deals with some heavy things, but it's really about life and how beautiful life is."

The film, which has been described as a unique teen relationship drama, kick off the Cannes Film Festival's prestigious Un Certain Regard section next Thursday and is slated to be released by Sony Pictures Classics in the fall.

Although Schuyler is currently busy with her music career, she did reveal that she'd love to tackle a role in an action movie someday.

"I would love to be a part of an action film and have stunts," she said. "Be in some leather catsuit and jump off buildings and such. ... I do pilates," she added with a laugh. You hear that, Hollywood? She's ready for some action!

What do you think of Ms. Fisk? Tell us in the comments!

After much anticipation, this Friday (April 22) marks the premiere of the long-awaited blog-house-inspired electronica documentary "The Electro Wars," which is streaming on Pitchfork. Directed by filmmaker Stephen Alex Vasquez, "The Electro Wars" is a commentary on the current state of dance music, and most notably the rise of electro-house and the other burgeoning subgenres in the States. Considering it's his first breakthrough film, the cast of characters Vasquez booked and level of access he was granted is impressive. Having started off as nothing more than a passionate fan with a very limited budget, it was no easy task for the indie filmmaker, who just two years ago could barely get into the clubs.

"Honestly, I didn't know what the hell I was doing," Vasquez admitted to MTV News. "I would tell [artists] I already had a bunch of people down: 'Oh, I already interviewed this guy, and this guy is coming up!' It was all bullsh--, [but] I needed to grab them somehow, and it worked!"

Those little white lies got his foot in the door and opened a passageway to a world he could have never imagined. The film has also been featured in various film festivals around the globe, including the Atlantic, the Stockholm and the Music Doc. All of this was made possible after he scored his first big interview with West Coast icon Steve Aoki, and with that, the rest of the dominoes began to fall. Read More...
