One Direction

Zachary Swickey

Veteran boy bander Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block isn't sure red-hot British bands One Direction and The Wanted are going to be long-term players on the music scene.

Talking to Yahoo UK, McIntyre said, "The odds are against both One Direction and The Wanted – neither of them are going to work in America – it hasn’t happened in 50 years so why now?"

(He had to be speaking specifically about British boy bands, as his own group found success in the U.S. in the early-90s and NKOTB's tour mates the Backstreet Boys, along with NSYNC and 98 Degrees, led the charge in the late-90s/early-00s boy band Renaissance.)

Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough was not as abrasive toward the up-and-coming groups, saying, “I’m not one to tell anyone what to do, how to make their career happen. The hardest places to crack are the UK and USA. And for success to happen a lot of things need to go right. It was a lot of right time, right place for Backstreets Boys.”

McIntyre, however, wasn't done speaking his mind. “The music has to be able to stand on its own but that’s not the only thing that matters. To have long term staying power the music has to be strong enough, to be timeless," he continued. "But nowadays with the Internet, you do something good or bad – either way the attention is on your and that makes you successful as well."

Apparently, McIntyre's words come from a place of concern, as he lamented the lack of a normal youth the guys will endure before it all comes crashing down. “It costs being a pop star, they [One Direction and The Wanted] don’t have regular girlfriends," he said. "They don’t have the experiences that everyone else has and that can be a bad thing. They’re missing out on being late on rent, doing laundry, or going out on normal dates – that’s missing out. And they’ll have to learn it all later.”

Do you think Joey McIntyre is right or wrong in his assessment of The Wanted and One Directions career longevity? Let us know in the comments below.

Earlier this week, the world’s collective boo, Jordan Knight, announced his plans to hit the road for a solo tour. The jaunt kicks off later this month, and in anticipation of what we are sure will be the greatest night of your life, the New Kid himself hopped on the phone with us to preview his tour plans.

“I have a full band; I have two dancers, so they’ll be some good choreography. It’ll be a real show. It’s not me just kind of going around taking up my time,” he teased. “And, it’s a real deal thing: a band, dancers, full-length show, a lot of excitement, a lot of crowd participation, singing a bunch of songs from the album Unfinished and also other solo songs as well from the past.”

Given the fact that Jordan has been busy touring with his boys in the New Kids On The Block and the Backstreet Boys, it would seem like he might want to chill out for a bit, but that’s not the case. At all. “I think I had to do it because I did an album and I never got the chance to go out and actually perform the songs. I did it at after parties, but that was just off-the-cuff,” he said. “I wanted to do a real show because I put so much into the album and the songs I believe are so great and I got such a great response from the fans, so it's the fans [who] really kind of cheered me on to do it. They really wanted me to do it.” Read More...

Consider our tickets bought! Jordan Knight has announced plans for a solo tour this month.

The New Kid on the Block will kick off the 10-date excursion on January 26 in Minneapolis before taking the act to such lucky cities as Atlanta, Nashville and Toronto, to name a few. Billed as “Jordan Knight: Live & Unfinished,” the singer opened up about the trek in a statement.

“I am very proud and excited to tell you that Jordan Knight Live & Unfinished will be hitting hand-picked cities across North America for an intimate evening of Music, Fun, and More! After the amazing NKOTBSB Arena Tour this past year, I feel truly blessed that I now have the time to get up close and personal with you, my fans, and sing these songs that mean so much to me!” he said. “You've all played such a big part in making this album a success so I can't think of a better way of saying THANK YOU, than to give you what you have asked for - Jordan Knight: Live & Unfinished!!”

Last year, the falsetto-loving Jordan released his solo album, Unfinished, and later this spring he’ll hit the road again with all his pals in NKOTBSB for all those lucky folks who live abroad. Did we mention we’ve also bought our plane tickets so that we can hit up the guys’ European tour? Read More...

Producer Jim Jonsin recently revealed to us that he'd love for Justin Bieber to channel the ultra smooth pop of the New Kids On The Block on the next batch of songs he puts out.

Since Biebs recently dished to MTV News that he's working on new music and the fact that boy bands are having a moment right now thanks to the success of the NKOTBSB tour, we're totally into that idea.

Justin's silky vocals are very reminiscent of Joey McIntyre's back in the day, so having him get into that groove feels about right to us. Even though Jonsin did note that he doesn't want him to literally cover the New Kids, just to take inspiration from their tunes, it got us thinking: What NKOTB songs would be perfect for Justin to cover?

"Step By Step"
Anytime we get to hear Bieber count the reasons why he loves us in a song, it signifies musical gold to me. Am I right people?

"Right Stuff"
We'd love him to sing this song, if only to learn the New Kids shuffle and perform it LIVE in concert.

Danny Wood is using his celebrity for a good cause that's very close to his heart. The NKOTBSB member has hooked up with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation to raise money for cancer research. The New Kid is auctioning off a custom painted 2004 Harley Davidson Heritage to help raise funds, and the winner not only gets the bike, but also a bevy of other cool prizes to satiate their boy band appetite.

"My mother passed away 12 years ago from breast cancer and when [the New Kids] got back together, I asked the guys if we could do something to raise money for the Komen Foundation," he told MTV News. "We started selling tank tops [and] we've raised a half a million dollars."

When the New Kids and the Backstreet Boys decided to hit the road together this year, he knew he had to step up his charity game. "I kind of wanted to do something a little bit bigger," he said. "The bike's on display and you can buy raffle tickets and you can win my Harley and a trip to see us."

So, would the guys of NKOTBSB switch places with one another? The short answer is yes. For the long answers, we went to one half of the band to see what they had to say.

We were totally into most of the guys' answers because they were pretty heartwarming and totally charming. For instance, Brian shared this with us, "I'd want to be Joe during 'Please Don’t Go Girl.' He's got this monumental moment." (For the record, he does. He actually kind of brings the house down.)

Danny's answer was just kind of adorable. Why? Well, this is what he shared, "I would switch places with 'Backstreet's Back' to do the choreography … I always wanted [to]. Well when we talked about this, in my head we'd all be doing that together. But it didn’t happen for me. I love that song and I love the choreography."

Read on for Howie’s surprising answer. Read More...

NKOTBSB

No tour is complete without some antics, and it seems that the men of NKOTBSB are not immune to pulling pranks. In fact, they seem quite into the idea of putting one another in uncomfortable situations.

When MTV News caught up with New Kids Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood, as well as Backstreet Boys Brian Littrell and Howie Dorough backstage during their tour stop in New Jersey on Monday, the guys shared what they've been doing to one another to keep themselves entertained and keep their counterparts on their toes.

"I was told night after night to look down during 'Hangin' Tough' cause there's a glass floor on part of the stage and I keep forgetting cause it really is one of the most special moments for me in the show," Donnie warmly recalled. "Well, I finally looked down and I saw Nick Carter's naked bum. He mooned me from below the stage. Very pale bum."

Jealous and afraid you're missing out on something? Well, he added, "I think some people are high enough in the seats that if they thought to look down they could probably see it…"

That's not the only time male nudity has happened whilst on the road. Howie shared, "They got us pretty good one time too…"

Last night, I saw the Backstreet Boys (for what feels like the millionth time) and New Kids On The Block (for the first time ever!) hit the stage as the amazing boy band hybrid NKOTBSB at the Izod Center in good old New Jersey.

Was I blown away? Why, yes. To be honest, I'm a huge fan of both groups, but really had no idea what I was getting myself into or what to expect. I was curious how these two massive pop acts would make it work. But make it work they did.

It was marvelous to see the New Kids for the first time – I’ve been a fan of theirs for longer than I'd care to admit – and it was amazing to see that BSB still have it. The room swooned for all nine guys, to say the least.

New Kids On The BlockBy Nicole Guanlao

We walked into a hole-in-the-wall warehouse on Thursday to sneak a peek at New Kids on the Block and the Jabbawockeez rehearsing for their surprise joint performance on the "Today Show" — and let me tell you, it was quite the experience.

We were in a small studio space watching them perform and goof around, and there's no doubt that these guys are talented. After several years, the members of New Kids on the Block still look as dreamy as ever and can still bust a move or two. If they came out as a new group in 2009 — having never been NKOTB — I firmly believe they would still hit it big and make the girls swoon. As for the Jabbawockeez, I was in awe over their dancing skills. In fact, I was so jealous of their moves that I asked them to teach me a thing or two. Needless say, I don't think I'm going to be a Jabbawockee any time soon.

We have video of my little dance lesson, but for my own morale, I'd rather lock it away in a vault. Read More...

Jocelyn VenaWe here at MTV News are a pretty diverse bunch, so the views expressed by some in our more official-type year-end lists (like James Montgomery's Top 25 Albums and Best Songs, and the Mixtape Monday Awards) are not necessarily shared by the rest of the newsroom. So, this week we gave everyone else a chance to chime in with their own lists and explain (or defend) their choices. You'll find the staff faves of 2008 all together here.

By Jocelyn Vena, Writer

Let's face it, 2008 was the year of the pop artist. And, since I am the resident pop expert around these parts, I decided to make my top 10 list all about the greatest pop albums to hit the charts in the last 12 months.

10. Pink, Funhouse: Her tough-girl attitude paid off with this album. She performed her single, "So What," at the VMAs and soon after, it was everywhere. Read More...
