New York - Fresh off his 100th SNL Digital short premiere on Saturday, Andy Samberg, dressed as Shy Ronnie, crashed Santigold's show in New York City Monday night (May 14).

The show was put on by Samsung to celebrate its 5 million "likes" on Facebook and held at the intimate Irving Plaza. The singer opened with her best-known hits before moving on to her latest tracks from her sophomore album, Master of My Make Believe.

She rocked out on stage with two backup dancers in festive costumes and at one point selected a dozen or so fans to come up on stage to dance with her.

The crowd, which was composed mainly of fans who were hooked up through Samsung's Facebook page, was treated to an open bar, appetizers and even a few surprise guests.

In addition to Samberg, Pharrell Williams also joined the indie sensation to perform "My Drive Thru."

The event was streamed live and you can check out Santi and Samberg in action below. Read More...

Diplo Santigold

By Zachary Swickey

Diplo is currently invading college campuses around the states performing in intimate venues for absolutely free on “AXE One Night Only Tour,” and during first stop of the tour in Madison, Wisconsin, filled MTV News in on Santigold's much anticipated sophomore effort, Master of My Make-Believe.

“I’ve done two songs with her – one's with [German electronic DJ] Boys Noize; it’s like the only rap record on the album. And another one called 'Pirate in the Water' that’s kind of like an 8-bit reggae song,” Diplo told us. “I love that record – it’s about one of our friends that passed away in New York. But her record is real adventurous and it sounds more like an '80s rock record than a club banger, ya know?”

We told the producer we loved all of the new songs we heard during Santigold's set at last year’s Austin City Limits Music Festival and he gushed about Santi’s originality, saying, “Yeah, it’s a little bit more… it’s not so straight ahead as what music is sounding like right now, but it sounds like her record, which you can’t say about a lot of artists anymore.”

Four years have passed since Santi's last record, and those wondering if the time will change her sound can rest easy. “I don’t think so. I think it’s in the same vein as her last album was," he said. "Her last album, me and Switch produced a lot of stuff after it was already written, because she wanted to make more of a modern sound, because she has more of an indie-rock vibe."

“Ya know with 'Creator' she became the front bearer of this new sound, and that record is still one of the most amazing songs out of our whole scene," he continued. "It’s one of the big records that started everything for us. I’m just lucky we came up together. I’m so happy about the crews I’ve started with Santi, M.I.A., Spank Rock, all these kids that are like kinda Philly. We call came out of Philly in a weird way. If you’re a fan of hers, you’re gonna be into it. If you’re a fan of just like buzz-y music, it might not be for you, but it sounds like a Santigold record."

Diplo then praised Santigold's devotion to the project, saying, “She’s there for every process, man, from the writing all the way to the mixing. She’s there for every session during mixing and the mixer was going f**king nuts. But she was there for everything and I respect her, because she’s 100 percent an artist that does the whole record – every piece of art.”

“I don’t even have the patience for that man,” he joked. “I’m just like whatever, I shoot it and it’s done. I trust my collaborators to do the best job, but she tends to every f**king aspect.”

Santigold

By Zachary Swickey

Thankfully, it seems like a new release from funk/pop/rap sensation Santigold is finally inching closer with the singer officially naming her new album: Master of My Make-Believe.

Santi chatted with V Magazine, revealing some new details about her upcoming sophomore record, saying, “My record is called Master of My Make-Believe because I want it to be about creating your own reality. I have a song called ‘The Keepers’: ‘We’re keepers, while we sleep in America our house is burning down.’ It’s about how if we accept this then that’s what it is. We’ve got to fix it.”

Explaining her reason for making music and what she hopes to accomplish, Santi stated, “I connect with music that makes me feel alive, or a sense of possibility. Music is powerful. If I go out and I’m watching a show and it’s really good, all I want to do is go home and work on music. It’s a backhanded motivation when something is really good. I want my music to be that for other people.”

Santigold also commented on her many collaborators in the studio. Mentioning the album will feature production work from a bevy of studio stars: Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Foster the People), DJ Switch (M.I.A., Beyonce), The Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, and TV on the Radio guitarist Dave Sitek, who produced Scarlett Johansson’s attempt at music. Santigold

By Zachary Swickey

Most artists in today’s mainstream music world churn albums out pretty regularly, which is a necessity considering the wealth of new acts being discovered on the daily (mostly thanks to YouTube). It’s not as common nowadays for a talented funk/pop/rap sensation like Santigold to leave fans waiting nearly four years for a new album (especially a follow-up to a strong debut), but that’s what is happening.

We’re not hatin’ on Santi, we love her, which is why we are hurting for some new music. Who else can turn a mere mortal man into a dancing god? Her guest cuts this year with the Beastie Boys and SNL-troupe The Lonely Island just have us salivating even more. Rap circles were wildly enthusiastic about her killer debut-album track “Brooklyn (Go Hard),” which was produced by Kanye West and eventually sampled by Jay-Z. So it wasn’t very shocking when earlier this year she inked a deal with none other than Jay’s Roc Nation. It sure seemed like a new album was imminent.

A short month later – via Hova’s unique lifestyle blog, Life + Times – Santi released "Go," which was supposed to be the first single from her sophomore record, tentatively being dubbed American Dreaming. The stellar track features guest vocals from Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs – adding some indie cred. The tune is yet another catchy anthem in the Santi canon as she sings, “People want my power and they want my station.”

It’s been seven whole months since the release of that single, and we’ve yet to hear another one let alone see a release date for American Dreaming. For most of 2011, Santi’s been on the road or in the studio, but we still only managed to dig up two interviews with the singer revealing details about the new album. Read More...
